warnmcr: fall back...

Despite the deceptively sunny (yet weirdly foggy) morning, alarmingly the onset of winter is really beginning to make its presence felt... the clocks are changing, the nights are drawing in and Halloween is upon us... if there isn't enough outdoor darkness for you, then there's also plenty of black box activity going on to fill your evenings:

This weekend, you can still catch Chanje Kunda's Superposition at The Lowry tonight Fri 27 Oct; while Flying Solo 2017 (27 Oct-11 Nov) gets underway with Afreena Islam's Daughters of the Curry Revoloution, Demi Nandhra's Oil and Water and Jackie Hagan's This Is Not A Safe Space on Fri 27 + Sat 28 Oct. Further afield Third Angel's 600 People is at Axis, Crewe tonight Fri 27 Oct; while Bradford Theatre in the Mill has Rebecca Atkinson Lord's The Class Project Fri 27 + Sat 28 Oct.

Next week (w/c 30 Oct) Flying Solo 2017 continues with Sheyda Darab's Treasures of Mysteries (Tue 31 Oct + Wed 1 Nov); Sarah Blanc's It Started With Jason Donovan and Paul O'Donnell's We've Got Each Other on Thu 2 Nov and Elmi Ali's Water Seeds Not Stones 0n Fri 3 + Sat 4 Nov. Theo Clinkard's This Bright Field is at The Lowry on Tue 31 Oct + Wed 1 Nov and Chris Goode's Jubilee is at The Royal Exchange (2-18 Nov). Two Destination Language's Declining Solo is at Edge Hill on Tue 31 Oct; while in Liverpool Homotopia kicks off with Darren Pritchard Dance's Rent Party (also Tue 31 Oct) followed by François Testory/Neil Bartlett's Medea, Written In Rage  on Wed 1 Nov - also showing at Lancaster Arts on Tue 31 Oct.

The following week (w/c 6 Nov) Word of Warning embarks on its final flourish of the season with Two Destination Language's Declining Solo at The Lowry and Darren Pritchard Dance's Rent Party:Domestic Edition at Adelphi Court, Salford (tickets just released - very limited capacity). Flying Solo concludes with Kate O'Donnell at The Lowry; while Manchester Jewish Museum has a Free For Arts Festival Scratch Night. Over in Liverpool, Homotopia continues with Rachael Young, Van Huynh Company and David Hoyle; while Live Art Bistro, Leeds has Tom Marshman.

Enjoy any suitably ghoulish weekend activity - or just the extra hour in bed.

    warnmcr: take your (super)position...

Still reeling a little from the whirl that was Akeim Toussaint Buck's Windows of Displacement last night, in actuality, as this reaches you I'm in a wheeled tin box hurtling (or crawling) my way towards Birmingham for Fierce Festival (til  Sun 22 Oct)...

This weekend, you can still catch Igor and Moreno's Andante tonight Fri 20 Oct and Clod Ensemble's Under Glass (til Sat 21 Oct) at The Lowry; while Darren Pritchard Dance's Body of Light is at Lancaster Arts on Sat 21 and Sale Waterside on Sun 22 Oct.  In Liverpool 1927's Golem is at the Everyman (til Sat 21 Oct). (Apparently Instructions for Border Crossing at the Unity has been cancelled). Looking east Forced Entertainment's Tomorrow's Parties is at Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield tonight Fri 20 Oct; while Lucy Hopkins's Le Foulard is at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 22 Oct.

Next week (w/c 23 Oct) Contact has Le Gateau Chocolat's Duckie on Tue 24 + Wed 25 Oct for the young at heart; while The Lowry has Candoco's Double Bill on Tue 24 Oct.  With our vested interest in plain view, Word of Warning will be orbiting Chanje Kunda's Superposition – also at The Lowry on Thu 26 + Fri 27 Oct.

Further afield Edge Hill has KT vs FK's Strange Loop on Tue 24 Oct; Axis, Crewe has Paul O'Donnell's We've Got Each Other on Tue 24 Oct and Third Angel's 600 People on Fri 27 Oct; and Bradford Theatre in the Mill has Rebecca Atkinson Lord's The Class Project Fri 27 + Sat 28 Oct.

Festival opening of the week goes to Contact, for Flying Solo 2017 (27 Oct-11 Nov) with Afreena Islam, Demi Nandhra, Jackie Hagan on Fri 27 + Sat 28 Oct; and continuing the following week with Sheyda Darab, Sarah Blanc, Paul O'Donnell, and Elmi Ali amongst others.

Also the following week (w/c 30 Oct) Theo Clinkard is at The Lowry and Jubilee is at The Royal Exchange. A pair of forthcoming Word of Warning shows crop up further afield: Two Destination Language at Edge Hill; and Rent Party, kicking off Liverpool's Homotopia – which then continues with François Testory (also showing at Lancaster Arts.)

Apologies for that very complicated last sentence - hopefully the links make it clear! Maybe I should just focus on driving - or sitting in a traffic jam... Don't call the police, though, this Weekly Warning was not actually brought to you by a mad women typing while driving but by the power of time-travelling auto-scheduling!

warnmcr: not that I'm superstitious but...

...triskaidekaphobia could be the order of the day as we hurtle ever faster onwards through October.

This weekend, possibly in keeping with the date, Contact has Peaches Christ, Jinkx Monsoon + Holestar's Hocum Pokem on Fri 13 + Sat 14 Oct; and at HOME, Orbit festival's final weekend has Lemn Sissay's Something Dark tonight, Fri 13 Oct; We Are Ian (til Sat 14 Oct); Paper Birds's Mobile (til Sun 15 Oct).  Also there's the chekhovian Khloe Kardashian, by the Arden School of Theatre with Sleepwalk Collective, also tonight Fri 13 Oct at Shena Simon Campus Waterside Theatre; Amy Lawrence's Gut Healing at the Portico Library on Sat 14 Oct; Matrafisc Dance's Soul's Paths  at The Wonder Inn (13-15 Oct); while Jackie Hagan's Cosmic Scallies concludes at the Royal Exchange on Sat 14 Oct. Further afield, Two Destination Language's Manpower is at The HUB, Leeds on Sun 15 Oct.

Next week (w/c 16 Oct) of course Word of Warning has Akeim Toussaint Buck's Windows of Displacement at STUN on Thu 19 Oct (act fast as we've just increased capacity so there is a small handful of tickets now available).
Elsewhere in parts Mancunian Clod Ensemble's Under Glass (18-21 Oct) and Igor and Moreno's Andante (Thu 19 + Fri 20 Oct) are at The Lowry; Motionhouse's Charge is at HOME (Tue 17 + Wed 18 Oct). Darren Pritchard's Body of Light is at Lancaster Arts on Sat 21 and Sale Waterside on Sun 22 Oct.  Also further afield, Edgehill has Andy Smith's The Preston Bill on Tue 17 Oct and Grace Surman's Motherload on Thu 19 Oct. In Liverpool 1927's Golem is at the Everyman (18-21 Oct); and Instructions for Border Crossing is at the Unity on Sat 21 Oct. Imitating the Dog's Nocturnes is at Lancaster Arts on Tue 17 + Wed 18 Oct;  Reckless Sleepers' Schrödinger is at Axis, Crewe on Thu 19 Oct; and Forced Entertainment's Tomorrow's Parties is at Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield on Fri 20 Oct; while Lucy Hopkins's Le Foulard is at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 22 Oct. Yet further away, for the dedicated enthusiast, Fierce Festival is in Birmingham (16-26 Oct).

The following week (w/c 23 Oct) it might be half term and for the young at heart Contact has Le Gateau Chocolat - but don't be lulled into thinking it's a quiet week though, as the non-stop parade of Manchester festivals rolls on with Flying Solo 2017 (27 Oct-11 Nov) also at Contact, featuring Jackie Hagan, Demi Nandra, Afreena Islam and Paul O'Donnell amongst others.  The Lowry has Candoco and Chanje Kunda while further afield Axis, Crewe also has Paul O'Donnell and Third Angel, and Rebecca Atkinson Lord is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill.

Enjoy Friday the 13th - I'm going to tempt fate with a funding application... Hope to see you at Akeim Toussaint Buck's Windows of Displacement next Thursday.

        warnmcr: octoberfest...

So here we are in the afterglow of Emergency and a big thanks to all the great artists, audiences and team. When I predicted staggering, slurring and tired and emotional behaviour I wasn't actually expecting that to be *me* - Emergency on food poisoning is really taking live art just a touch far!

Terrifyingly we're already almost a week into October and the full force of autumn programme continues. This weekend you can still catch Daniel Bye's Instructions for Border Crossing at HOME til Sat 7 Oct (Selina Thompson's Salt has been cancelled due to illness); and Mary Pearson's Fomo, Mofos! is at Sale Waterside tonight, Fri 6 Oct.  Elsewhere,  SH!T Theatre's Letters To Windsor House is at Live Art Bistro tonight Fri 6 Oct and Emma Decent's I Don't Know What I'm Supposed To Be Doing is at Burnley Library on Sat 7 Oct (also at Brighouse Library on Fri 13 Oct.)

Next week (w/c  9 Oct) take another deep breath: HOME has The Believers Are But Brothers (9-12 Oct), We Are Ian (12-14 Oct), Bourgeois + Maurice (10+11 Oct), Paper Birds's Mobile (11-15 Oct ) and Lemn Sissay's Something Dark on Fri 13 Oct. Contact has Aakash Odedra's Je Suis (10-12 Oct) and Peaches Christ, Jinkx Monsoon + Holestar's Hocum Pokem on Fri 13 + Sat 14 Oct.  Fresh from its Emergency research Matrafisc Dance's Soul's Paths  is at The Wonder Inn (13-15 Oct); while Jackie Hagan's Cosmic Scallies continues at the Royal Exchange until Sat 14 Oct.

Further afield Charlie Morrissey + Paula Hampson are at Axis, Crewe on Tue 10 Oct; in Liverpool at the Unity, there's Brigitte Aphrodite's My Beautiful Black Dog (Wed 11 + Thu 12 Oct) and Cheryl Martin's Alaska on Thu 12 Oct; and in Leeds at Live Art Bistro there's Scottee's Bravado on Thu 12 Oct.

The following week (w/c 16 Oct) things calm down a touch around these parts BUT, for the hard core, Fierce Festival kicks off in Birmingham (16-26 Oct).  Of course, we at Word of Warning will be back in the fray with the (nearly sold-out) Akeim Toussaint Buck at STUN; while elsewhere in parts Mancunian Igor and Moreno and Clod Ensemble are at The Lowry; Motionhouse are at HOME; and Darren Pritchard is at Sale Waterside.  Further afield Andy Smith and Grace Surman are at Edgehill; 1927 at Liverpool Everyman; Reckless Sleepers at Axis, Crewe; Forced Entertainment at Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield.

warnmcr: buy this event a drink!

So, thanks to Jo Bannon, we're now up and running with Word of Warning Autumn/Winter 2017 - and holding our breath for the thrills and spills that Saturday may bring. Generally pretty unruly, who knows what will happen when Emergency is actually let loose on the bevvies for its 18th - fingers crossed for staggering, slurring and gratuitous nudity...

It could, of course, all be justified, as with 27 pieces of work in just the one day, tired and emotional behaviour might just be in order.  Events kick off at midday with durational, installation and short performances - including Gameshow counting our value in tiddlywinks; toddler tantrums, jelly and ice cream from Alex Billingham and a quintet of one to one conversations.  From 5pm we move into show mode including the return of some old friends - including Krissi Musiol, Nathan Birkinshaw and both portions of 70/30 Split.

Whilst Word of Warning has Emergency tunnel-vision, there is apparently life beyond it. This weekend: Mother's Ruin is at Contact tonight, Fri 29 Sep; while Jackie Hagan's Cosmic Scallies is ongoing at The Royal Exchange Theatre (to 14 Oct).  Meanwhile Orbit Festival (to 15 Oct) at HOME has Scottee's Bravado (Fri 29 + Sat 30 Sep) - alongside Greg Wohead's sold-out duo of shows.  You could also do a quick trip across the road from Emergency to the Redbricks to catch Conor Aylward's Learning To Swim On An Ironing Board on Sat 30 Sep; while in Leeds, Jane English's 20B is at Slung Low's HUB on Sun 1 Oct.

Next week (w/c 2 Oct) in parts Mancunian you can easily go out (and pretty much double book yourself) every night of the week. At HOME there's Bertrand Lesca & Nasi Voutsas's Eurohouse (Mon 2 + Tue 3 Oct) and Palmyra (Tue 3 + Wed 4 Oct); Daniel Bye's Instructions for Border Crossing (5-7 Oct) and Selina Thompson's Salt (Fri 6 + Sat 7 Oct).  Contact has Christopher Brett Bailey's Kissing The Shotgun Goodnight on Wed 4 + Thu 5 Oct;  Sale Waterside has Mark Thomas's A Show That Gambles On The Future (Wed 4 Oct) and Mary Pearson's Fomo, Mofos! (Fri 6 Oct); LEGROOM also has a performance event featuring  Henry Andersen; Amy Voris & Cath Cullinane; and Rob Lye on Wed 4 Oct.

Further afield Emma Decent's I Don't Know What I'm Supposed To Be Doing is at Burnley Library on Sat 7 Oct; the Arts Centre at Edgehill University is busy with  Laurence Clark's Independence  on Tue 3 Oct and Derailed on Thu 5 Oct; Imitating the Dog's Nocturnes is at Axis, Crewe on Thu 5 Oct and SH!T Theatre's Letters To Windsor House is at Live Art Bistro on Fri 6 Oct.

The following week (w/c 9 Oct) don't think for a second that things will calm down: The Believers Are But Brothers, We Are Ian, Bourgeois + Maurice, Paper Birds and Lemn Sissay are all at HOME; Aakash Odedra and Peaches Christ, Jinkx Monsoon + Holestar are at Contact; while Matrafisc Dance is at The Wonder Inn.  Further afield Charlie Morrissey + Paula Hampson are at Axis, Crewe; Brigitte Aphrodite and Cheryl Martin are at the Unity, Liverpool; Scottee is at Live Art Bistro, Leeds; and Emma Decent is at the Square Chapel, Halifax.

Well, that sea of links is almost as complex to manage as the Emergency schedule!
Just one final thing - if you've been to one of our events since April 2017 and you'd like to help us and Live Art UK learn about audiences for Live Art nationally, please fill out the new 2017/18 survey.

Hope to see you tomorrow at Z-arts.

warnmcr: coming of age - would you let this event vote..?

After a bit of a slow start in performance world, stand by as Autumn is getting serious... Whilst everywhere seems suddenly to be on overdrive, I think we at Word of Warning can claim the crown for overdoing it with 28 pieces in a week - even if 27 of them are in the one day!  Yes, Emergency officially turns 18 next weekend - whether an event that bonkers should be accorded voting rights is debatable, then again, based on recent electoral outcomes... maybe it should!

Before that, this weekend there's still time to head for the hills for AND Festival (til Sun 24 Sep) including Waterlicht, Heavy Metal Detector; Listening To The Dark Tour and Evening Event; or closer to home you can catch We're Not Really Here at Contact til 23 Sept; Conor Aylward's Learning To Swim On An Ironing Board on Sat 23 + 30 Sep in the Redbricks, Hulme and RashDash's Two Man Show at the Royal Exchange on Sat 23 Sep.

Next week (w/c 25 Sep) of course sees the start of Word of Warning's Autumn/Winter 2017 with a double whammy:
Jo Bannon's Alba - an extraordinary meditation on paleness - at The Lowry on Wed 27 Sep and the coming of age of Emergency on Sat 30 Sep (don't I feel truly old!)

Elsewhere Contact has Sean Cernow's Being Sebastian (25-28 Sep) and Mother's Ruin on Fri 29 Sep; while Jackie Hagan's Cosmic Scallies is at The Royal Exchange Theatre (27 Sep - 14 Oct).  Meanwhile HOME kicks off its Orbit Festival (28 Sep-15 Oct) with Scottee's Bravado (Thu 28 - Sat 30 Sep) and on Sat 30 Sep, Greg Wohead's already sold-out Hurtling and The Backseat of My Car...

The following week (w/c 25 Sep) really goes into overdrive, with a collision between Orbit and Journey's Festival... with offerings including Eurohouse, Palmyra, Instructions for Border Crossing and Selina Thompson at HOME.  Theres's also Christopher Brett Bailey at Contact; Mark Thomas and Mary Pearson at Sale Waterside; and further afield Emma Decent is at Burnley Literary Festival; Laurence Clark and Derailed are at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University; Imitating the Dog are at Axis, Crewe and SH!T Theatre are at Live Art Bistro.

Have a good weekend - hoping to see lots of you on Wednesday at The Lowry for Jo Bannon's Alba and remember, WoW's whole season is Pay What You Decide!

              warnmcr: terraces AND caverns...

As the chill deepens and the remaining leaves turn colour, the 'treacles amongst us are starting to return to our natural dark enclosed habitats...

This weekend in Manchester you can catch Gecko Theatre's The Wedding and Gary McNair's Letters to Morrissey (both at HOME until Sat 16 Sep) or for the more theatrical: Paines Plough's Growth is at The Edge Theatre, Chorlton on Sat 16 Sep.  Over in Leeds Furnace Festival (11-23 Sep) has Daniel Bye's Instructions for Border Crossing on Fri 15 + Sat 16 Sep.

Next week (w/c 18 Sep) Furnace continues at West Yorkshire Playhouse with Transcreative's You've Changed on Tue 19 Sep; Nic Green's Cock and Bull on Wed 20 Sep; and RashDash's Two Man Show on Thu 21 + Fri 22 Sep (which is also at the Royal Exchange the next evening,  Sat 23 Sep). For something a bit different, Contact is metaphorically taking to the terraces with We're Not Really Here (20-23 Sep); while AND Festival (21-24 Sep) is exploring the depths of Castleton: Waterlicht, Heavy Metal Detector; Listening To The Dark tour and Evening Event caught my eye. On an altogether more intimate scale, Conor Aylward's Learning To Swim On An Ironing Board is on Sat 23 + 30 Sep in the Redbricks, Hulme.

The following week (w/c 25 Sep) things really pick up pace in Manchester. Of course in parts Word of Warning, there's a frantic burst of activity with both Jo Bannon and Emergency 2017. Elsewhere Contact has Sean Cernow and Mother's Ruin; while Jackie Hagan is at The Royal Exchange Theatre; and HOME kicks off its Orbit Festival (28 Sep-15 Oct) with Scottee, Greg Wohead Hurtling and The Backseat of My Car...

Have a good weekend - I'll be in techie-world, with 26 meetings and skypes in preparation for Emergency!

                warnmcr: warming up...

As the faint hope of a late summer fades and with the impending Furnace festival in our sights, we in the WoW office are sitting shivering in our blankets, eyeing up our defunct fireplace, definitely more hot toddy than champers...

This weekend things are also looking a bit cool, with a distinctly watery theme to what is on: tonight Fri 8 Sep there's another chance to catch Pool at The Bluecoat, Liverpool (Fri 8 Sep); or Come Find Us: Me & My Whale at Live Art Bistro, Leeds.

Next week (w/c 11 Sep) HOME is busy with Gecko Theatre's The Wedding and Gary McNair's Letters to Morrissey (both 12-16 Sep); while Emma Decent's I Don't Know What I'm Supposed To Be Doing is at the Portico Library on Tue 12 Sep. For a truly cringeworthy link - things warm up over in Leeds with Furnace Festival (11-23 Sep) setting West Yorkshire Playhouse ablaze(!)  In its first week it includes Rachel Mars's Joke Translation Service on Tue 12 Sep; and Daniel Bye's Instructions for Border Crossing on Fri 15 + Sat 16 Sep.

The following week (w/c 18 Sept) is mainly dominated by Furnace - with Transcreative, Nic Green and RashDash (also coming to the Royal Exchange the next night). For something a bit different, Contact is delving into the world of football fandom with We're Not Really Here; while AND Festival (21-24 Sep) is taking to the Peaks.

Take advantage of the last vestiges of lull however, as things seriously heat up as we head towards October...

                  warnmcr: getting fizzy...

So, as September dawns and the illusion of Summer retreats out of view, it's time for us at Word of Warning to bubble to the surface once more for our Autumn/Winter 2017 season.  A season that sees its oldest child come of age and earn its crust and a season where you choose what you want to pay. Tales of displacement and of fitting in; of home and of what it means to belong; of getting by and of paying the rent…

We kick off on Wed 27 Sep at The Lowry with Jo Bannon's Alba; followed almost immediately by the eighteenth (yes, really, 18...!) Emergency on Sat 30 Sep at Z-arts.  October sees us at STUN Studio at Z-arts for Akeim Toussaint Buck's Windows of Displacement, before returning to The Lowry for Two Destination Language's Declining Solo. The season rounds off with a return to the tower blocks of Salford for a Domestic Edition of Darren Pritchard Dance's Rent PartyThe whole season is Pay What You Decide, so never let it be said that cost is a deterrent!

Beyond the world of Warning, performance is just starting to emerge slowly from the summer/Edinburgh bubble...
This weekend you could catch Pool at The Bluecoat, Liverpool (Fri 1, Sat 2 + Fri 8 Sep); or on Sat 2 Sept, Briggsyproduces & Hawk Dance Theatre's Hands On at HOME.
Next week (w/c 4 Sep) Live Art Bistro also gets going with Come Find Us: Me & My Whale.
The following week (w/c 11 Sep), Gecko Theatre's The Wedding lands at HOME; while over in Leeds, West Yorkshire Playhouse kicks off the first festival of the season: Furnace (11-23 Sep) featuring, in its first week, Rachel Mars and Daniel Bye, amongst others.

I'm off to shine up our fizzy pink champagne flyers (in honour of Emergency's 18th) - coming soon to a leaflet rack near you!

                  best

                    warnmcr: fringe deforestation...

So here we are again at the start of yet another Edinburgh megafest.  This year it is coloured, just a little, by the ending of Forest Fringe. If you happen to be in town on Fri 11 Aug, check out their final 'pass the torch' farewell at Cameo Cinema; as part of the Cameo Live Programme (6-26 Aug), which also includes Deborah PearsonMamoru Iriguchi and Chris Thorpe + mala voadora.

Without FF seeking out work is even more befuddling - so if you're really looking for a shortcut, just go to Summerhall... It is also a British Council Showcase year (21-26 Aug - a good week to be in Edinburgh) so you can also have a look at their selection.

If you want to dig a bit deeper, once again I've uploaded WoW's long list below.  As ever please forgive errors and omissions - it *is* largely our own planning tool, so it may miss out things we've seen or that we know are coming to Manchester anyway - and we mainly steer clear of internationals as they're beyond WoW's programming paygrade!

For a snapshot, we will be spending a good amount of time at Summerhall and the things taking our fancy include:
Selina ThompsonMark Thomas and Rachel Mars; some of the Canada Hub @ Kings Hall; and some of the Big in Belgium work at Upper Church @ Summerhall including Ontroerend Goed and Suzanne Grotenhuis, plus Action Hero at Codebase.
The Pleasance Courtyard could also be a worthwhile place to spend some time - look out for Touretteshero and Carnesky Productions. Underbelly venues have some interest, including LaPelle's Factory; while standing out at the Traverse, for me, is Wild Bore.

At the more physical end of the spectrum, Zoo venues' programmes include Liz AgissAakash Odedra plus Imitating the Dog; and there's The Leith Volcano with Impermanence Dance Theatre and Volcano Theatre; plus lots on at DanceBase - for some less known names maybe try Keira MartinBill Cole + Gordon MonahanOona Doherty.

Of course, if you fancy supporting some Manchester and wider northern friends the roster includes Proto-type TheaterPowder KegTin Can People,TransCreativeEggs CollectiveRashDash and Gracefool Collective - or of course, there's Forced Entertainment who have ascended the dizzy heights of the International Festival.

Please be aware that this is very much my picks, largely from paper - so don't hold it against me! Final tips - please check dates carefully with edfringe.com as you don't want to fall prey to random days off - and my main tip is to log-in edfringe.com, and use the favourites facility (you can then export your favourites as a handy spreadsheet and sort it as you please!)

Enjoy... and think of us as we'll be attempting the whole thing at breakneck speed - how many shows can you see in an 18 hour daytrip?

                    Best
