warnmcr: take your Turn...

Here we are at the very brink of WoW's Spring/Summer 2017; kicking off tonight, Fri 28 Apr, with the whirlwind that is Turn 2017 at Contact. Ten live and three video works in just the one evening - if that isn't the perfect curtain raiser to International Dance Day, I don't know what is... (no, I hadn't heard of it either!)
If that hard-sell hasn't whetted your appetite, then you could join Becoming Storybook's Secret Garden (Hulme Garden Centre various dates from Sat 29 Apr); take a trip to Sheffield for Jamal Gerald's God Complex at Theatre Delicatessen, also tonight, Fri 28 Apr; or to Lancaster for Hear Me Roar Festival (until 3 May)

Next week (w/c 1 May) if you're still in the mood for dance - there's Rosie Kay Dance's MK Ultra at HOME on Wed 3 + Thu 4 May and Lucy Haighton's Ruido at the University of Sheffield.  For something completely different Thick Richard's Swear School is at Contact (Wed 3-Sat 6 May) and Nick Cassenbaum's Bubbleschmeisis is at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 7 May.

The following week (w/c 8 May) Daniel Bye is at the Met, Bury; Ellie Harrison and French Mottershead are at Lancaster Arts; Mark Murphy is at Blackpool Grand; Nick Cassenbaum is at the LBT, Huddersfield; and the Best of Both Worlds is at the HUB, Leeds.  But of course, you wouldn't want to be anywhere other than at the next stage of Word of Warning's spring production frenzy: Works Ahead at BOTH Contact and STUN Studio!

So while I'm off to wind myself up into a spin, hopefully I'll see lots of you at Turn tonight!

best

warnmcr: the spin...

So the easter break is over, and just to wake us all up, the political landscape has taken yet another bizarre and perplexing shift... but WoW is back hoping to bring some strength and stability (?!) to your social calendar, with its full Spring/Summer 2017 line-up, kicking off next Friday with Turn 2017.

Before that, this weekend in parts Mancunian, there's SH!T Theatre's Letters to Windsor House, tonight Fri 21 Apr at HOME.  You can also still catch Transform Festival in Leeds (19-22 Apr) including Grace Surman's Motherload (Fri 21 Apr); RashDash's The Darkest Corners + El Conde de Torrefiel's Guerrilla (Fri 21 + Sat 22 Apr); Selina Thompson's The Missy Elliott Project (Sat 22 Apr) plus more.

Next week (w/c 24 Apr), naturally, WoW's focus is entirely on Turn 2017: 13 new northern dance works all in one night (Fri 28 Apr) at Contact.
Further afield you can see Martin Creed:Words and Music at Media Factory, Preston on Tue 25 Apr; Rachel Mars's Our Carnal Hearts at Live Art Bistro, Leeds On Wed 26 Apr; and Jamal Gerald's God Complex at Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield on Fri 28 Apr. Meanwhile, in Lancaster the Hear Me Roar Festival (26 Apr- 3 May) kicks off with the redoubtable Liz Agiss' Slap + Tickle on Wed 26 at Lancaster Arts.

The following week (w/c 1 May) dance continues to feature with Rosie Kay Dance at HOME and Lucy Haighton in Sheffield.  In other modes Thick Richard is at Contact and Nick Cassenbaum is at the HUB, Leeds.

That's your lot for now - please do come and give Turn a twirl!

warnmcr: tomfoolery...

So here I am writing amidst a whirl of singing fish, musical bears and a lot of silly walking... and that's just a normal day in the WoW office! Of course we're a little fixated this weekend as our fourth Haphazard is about to launch itself on an unsuspecting world.  This is not live art for children but live art for everyone - pop in to Z-arts between 12+4pm tomorrow, Saturday 1 April and join us for free... just beware there might be the odd April Fool...

I believe there is life beyond Haphazard this weekend, I'm just failing to experience it... Tonight, Fri 31 Mar AAA Theatre's The Misfit Analysis  is at the Lowry, and Republica is at HOME on Fri 31 Mar + Sat 1 Apr.  Also on Sat 1 Apr at HOME is Sol Picós's One Hit Wonders (sneaky tip use code MANCHESTERTHEATRES at checkout for £5 HOME tickets), or a bit further out, at Worsley Village Library, there's Blast Theory's Take Me To The Bridgewater.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond anyone's control Robert LePage's Far Side of the Moon has been cancelled.

Further afield John Smith LIVE: whatever being is at Live Art Bistro, Leeds, also on Sat 1 April and Unlimited Theatre's Am I Dead Yet? at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 2 Apr.

Next week (w/c 3 Apr) in parts Mancunian things slow right down in WoW territory, but if you want a dance based outing there's STRIDE at Salford Uni on Fri 7 + Sat 8 April.  Further afield you can catch Jenna Watt's Faslane on Fri 7 + Sat 8 April at WYP, Leeds... meanwhile we'll be heading way north for BUZZCUT (5-9 April) in Glasgo.

The following few weeks are a bit confusing as Easter throws its usual spanner in the works.  This Weekly Warning is going to take a bit of a break and will be back on Fri 21 Apr with news of Word of Warning's Spring/Summer programme (sneak preview of the first half below).  So, in the interim, while we haven't found much to talk about in w/c 10 April, in w/c 17 April (immediately after Easter) there's a minor explosion of activity that you shouldn't miss in the shape of Transform Festival in Leeds (19-22 April), plus SH!T Theatre at HOME; and Nick Cassenbaum at The Lowry.

I'm now off to plot tomfoolery and chaos; fish themed karaoke and a funereal disco - hope to see you at Haphazard!

warnmcr: spring forward...

So here we are officially in Spring -  the evenings are getting lighter and the old and tired among us will be moaning about the loss of an hour's sleep on Sunday!

This weekend sees the finale of SICK! including, tonight, Fri 24 Mar Ahilan Ratnamohan's Michael Essien I Want To Play As You at Contact; and tomorrow,  Sat 25 Mar Milo Rau's Five Easy Pieces at HOME.  Further afield, also on Sat 25 Mar Matthew Floyd Jones's Marksman is at the HUB, Leeds; or further still, over in Hull ReRooted takes place tonight and tomorrow (Fri 24 + Sat 25 Mar) at Humber Street Gallery.

Next week (w/c 27 Mar) sees no let-up at all - with Saturday being crunchpoint.  The Lowry has AAA Theatre's The Misfit Analysis  on Fri 31 Mar and Robert LePage's Far Side of the Moon on Sat 1 and Sun 2 Apr.  HOME welcomes the Viva! Festival including, on Fri 31 Mar + Sat 1 Apr Republica (Juan Carlos Otero, Keir Cooper, Lola Ruerda with Emma Frankland)and the truly extraordinary Sol Picós's One Hit Wonders also Sat 1 Apr. Also on Saturday, out at Worsley Village Library there's also an in immersive sound installation by Blast Theory. We at WoW, meanwhile will be fooling about at Z-arts all afternoon on Sat 1 Apr with the utterly bonkers Haphazard - think singing fish, sax-playing bears and the odd April Fool.  I'm sure there's a way of getting to all of Haphazard, Republica, Sol Picó and LePage - I'll let you know next week if I've figured it out!

Further afield Gary Clarke's Coal is at The Grand, Blackpool on Wed 29 Mar, Unlimited Theatre's Am I Dead Yet? at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 2 Apr and the lovely Levantes Dance Theatres's The Band will be at Preston's Derelict on Thu 30 Mar.

The following week (w/c 3 Apr) things the Easter slow-down starts, but you can catch Jenna Watt at WYP, Leeds or if you're up for a major outing, there's BUZZCUT (5-9 April) in Glasgow!

Have a good weekend and don't forget to change your clocks!

HAPHAZARD 2017
A free day out for the curious of all ages with an April Fool's twist.

warnmcr: hard working people...

This week WoW finds itself ensconced in the Studio at the Royal Exchange Theatre for the first time, for our run (yes, run!) of Nic Green's Cock and Bull (til Sat 18 Mar).  Tonight (Fri 17 Mar) is sold-out, but there are still tickets for tomorrow (Sat 18 Mar) and all I can say is *don't miss it*!

This weekend you can also still catch SICK! Festival:  today, Fri 17 Mar in Eccles c/o The Lowry there's Claire Cunningham's Guide Gods; and, at Contact,  Hetain Patel's American Man. Tomorrow, Sat 18 Mar at STUN Studio at Z-arts there's Jaamil Olawale Kosoko's Negrophobia; and at HOME, Lucas de Man's De Man in Europe
Further afield, Lydia Cottrell's Atlantis is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill, also on Sat 18 Mar.

Next week (w/c 20 Mar) sees the final week of SICK! On Wed 22 + Thu 23 Mar there's Zvizdal's Berlin at The Lowry; and Robert Softly's If These Spasms Could Speak at HOME.  On Fri 24 Mar Hiraeth is in Hulme (though I believe it's sold-out);  Ahilan Ratnamohan's Michael Essien I Want To Play As You is at Contact; and on Sat 25 Mar Milo Rau's Five Easy Pieces is at HOME.
Elsewhere, on Wed 22 Mar Gracefool Collective's Convicts + Lunatics  is at The Met, Bury; and  Catherine Hoffman's free Lunch with the StenchWench is at Live Art Bistro, Leeds; while on Sat 25 Mar Matthew Floyd Jones's Marksman is at the HUB, Leeds.

The following week (w/c 27 Mar) sees AAA Theatre and Robert LePage at The Lowry; and HOME goes all spanish with Republica and Sol Pico. Further afield Gary Clarke is in Blackpool, Levantes are in Preston and Unlimited Theatre is in Leeds.  We at WoW meanwhile will be indulging in a little all ages tomfoolery with the fourth Haphazard at Z-arts.

That's it for this week, except to say that we too are gutted to see the end of Lyn Gardner's Top Tickets in the Guardian. As audience, promoter and northern micro-counterpart we are more than conscious of the value of Lyn's work and how damaging its loss will be, particularly to those of us interested in work beyond the mainstream and outside London. We would like to add Word of Warning's voice to the 40 theatres' call to the Guardian to reconsider its decision.

warnmcr: not a load of bull...

As the first glimmers of Spring see the Chancellor's icy fingers (or maybe cold feet) grapple with the self-employed, it seems fitting that we at WoW should be moving into political mode for our next outing - our first to the Royal Exchange - with the blisteringly beautiful political battering ram that is Nic Green's Cock and Bull (16-18 April).

But before that this weekend, tonight (Fri 10 Mar) you can catch Matthews + Burtin's Best of Both Worlds at Sale Waterside; while SICK! Festival is up and running: at the Whitworth with French Mottershead's Afterlife (various dates) and Bernadette Russell's Do Nice, Be Kind, Spread Happy (Sat 11 Mar); and at the Lowry with Ridiculusmus's Give Me Your Love on Fri 10 + Sat 11 Mar and Sophie Willan's On Record on Sun 12 Mar.

Further afield, to the east, Bradford Theatre in the Mill also has Sophie Willan's On Record, tonight Fri 10 Mar; Harrogate Theatres have Eurohouse on Fri 10 + Sat 11 Mar (the HUB show on Sunday is now sold-out); while in Leeds Paula Varjack's Show Me The Money is at Live Art Bistro on Sat 11 Mar. To the west, LEAP 2017 has Project O's Voodoo at Make Liverpool (c/o Unity) on Sat 11 Mar.

Next week (w/c 13 Mar)  WoW joins forces with the the Royal Exchange for Nic Green's Cock and Bull on Thu 16 - Sat 18 Mar.  It's selling very fast so don't delay!
Meanwhile SICK! continues: on Wed 15 + Fri 17 Mar at The Lowry with Claire Cunningham's Guide Gods; on Wed 15 Mar at Contact with TheatreClub's The Game + Daniel Hellmann's Traumboy; and on Sat 18 Mar at STUN Studio at Z-arts with Jaamil Olawale Kosoko's Negrophobia and at HOME Lucas de Man's De Man in Europe.
Elsewhere Mary Pearson's FoMO, mofos! is at Edge Hill on Tue 14 Mar; and Lydia Cottrell's Atlantis is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill on Sat 18 Mar.

The following week (w/c 20 Mar) SICK! enters its final week with Zvizdal, Robert Softly, Hiraeth, Michael Essien and Milo Rau. Elsewhere things slow a little though Gracefool Collective are at The Met, Bury; and in Leeds, Catherine Hoffman is at Live Art Bistro and Matthew Floyd Jones is at the HUB.

Hope to see all you hard-working people at the Exchange!

warnmcr: in sickness and in health...

So, in this mixed up world, after a week of snow and woolly balaclava knitting, it's apparently now officially meteorological Spring..!  This weekend is a touch quiet but you can still catch Paul Auster's City of Glass (4-10 Mar) or further afield, Liz Rothschild's Outside the Box is at the LBT, Huddersfield on Fri 3 Mar - or you might want to use it to take a deep breath as...

...next week (w/c 6 Mar) is a whole other matter:
In Mancunia  SICK! Festival (8-25 Mar) kicks off with Hiraeth on Wed 8 Mar in Longsight (featuring Afreena Islam, Toni Dee Paul + Jamil Keating). It continues at the Whitworth with French Mottershead's Afterlife (various dates) and Bernadette Russell's Do Nice, Be Kind, Spread Happy on Sat 11 Mar; and at the Lowry, with Liz Agiss's Slap + Tickle on Thu 9 Mar, Ridiculusmus's Give Me Your Love on Fri 10 + Sat 11 Mar and Sophie Willan's On Record on Sun 12 Mar.  Beyond SICK! Sale Waterside has Matthews + Burtin's Best of Both Worlds on Fri 10 Mar.

In Liverpool LEAP 2017 (1-12 Mar) continues at the Unity Theatre, including Stop Gap Theatre's The Enormous Room on Mon 6 Mar;  Mary Pearson's FoMO MOFOs on Wed 8 Mar; Hetain Patel's American Man on Thu 9 Mar and Project O's Voodoo on Sat 11 Mar.
Also in Liverpool, Reckless Sleepers' Negative Space is at the Capstone Theatre on Mon 6 Mar.
In Ormskirk, Edge Hill has Liz Agiss's Slap + Tickle on Tue 7 Mar (also part of LEAP) and Katy Baird's Workshy on Thu 9 Mar; while Bradford Theatre in the Mill has Sophie Willan's On Record on Fri 10 Mar.

The following week (w/c 13 Mar) there's no let-up: SICK! continues including Claire Cunningham, TheatreClub, Daniel HellmannNegrophobia and Lucas de Man. Elsewhere Mary Pearson is at Edge Hill; Milk's Joan is at the LBT, Huddersfield; Eurohouse is at the HUB, Leeds; and Lydia Cottrell is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill.  Of course, what you won't want to miss amidst all that is Word of Warning's next outing - our first to the Royal Exchange with the tour de force that is Nic Green's Cock and Bull.

warnmcr: now we are five...

My ears are still ringing from last night's otherworldly experience of FK Alexander becoming Judy Garland under the watchful eye of Andy Warhol at the Whitworth.  Unbelievably and quite fittingly, that was Word of Warning's 80th event and today is the fifth anniversary of our first ever public outing!

Back in the real world, the next couple of weeks activity seems a bit spread out:

This weekend sees the final epic Prince-celebratory blast of Queer Contact; while Jackie Hagan's Jumble Soul (wip) continues at Sale Waterside tonight, Fri 17 Feb; and Adam Pownall's Getting Better Slowly is also at the at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 19 Feb.

Next week (w/c 20 Feb) Lancaster Arts has Matthews + Burtin' The Best of Both Worlds  on Tue 21 Feb and a double bill of wips from Paper People Theatre + Theatre 42 on Wed 22 Feb; while on Thu 23 Feb Axis, Crewe has Michael Pinchbeck's Concerto.  Looking east, on Sat 25 Feb Theatre in the Mill, Bradford has Lauren Silver's Surprise and in Leeds, Live Art Bistro has Rachael Young's OUT; then on Sun 26 Feb the HUB has Daniel Bye's Safe House.

The following week (w/c 27 Feb) Axis, Crewe has Kieran Hurley and Proto-type Theater, who also join WoW at The Lowry; Liz Rothschild is at the LBT, Huddersfield and Paul Auster is at HOME.

I'm off to let last night's shenanigans fully sink in - have a good weekend!

warnmcr: somewhere over the Warhol...

Blinking and just a bit bleary after a whistlestop trip to Bristol for IBT17 and an overnight drive, I can't quite believe that it's Friday all over again...

This weekend, tonight Fri 10 Feb, sees the opening of Queer Contact 2017; with Trans Creative and Le Gateau Chocolat's Black (both on Fri 10 + Sat 11 Feb); plus up in Preston there's Glen Neath + David Rosenberg Fiction on Sat 11 Feb at the Media Factory, Preston.

Next week (w/c 13 Feb) in parts Mancunian, Queer Contact keeps up the pace: on 14-16 Feb there's Milk's Joan; plus, there's a real crescendo on Thu 16 Feb with David Hoyle's Diamond and, of course (the biggie for us) is FK Alexander's (I Could Go On Singing) Over The Rainbow alongside a certain iconic pop art show at the Whitworth (6-9pm).

Elsewhere Jackie Hagan's Jumble Soul (wip) is at Sale Waterside on Thu 16 and Fri 17 Feb; while further afield, Edge Hill University has a bumper week with Reckless Sleepers' Negative Space on Mon 13 + Tue 14 Feb; and Jamie Wood's Oh No! on Thu 16 Feb. Adam Pownall's Getting Better Slowly is also at the LBT, Huddersfield on Tue 14 Feb and at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 19 Feb.

The following week (w/c 20 Feb) Lancaster Arts has Matthews + Burtin and Theatre 42 + Paper People Theatre;  Axis, Crewe has Michael Pinchbeck; Theatre in the Mill has Lauren Silver; and in Leeds, Rachael Young is at Live Art Bistro and Daniel Bye is at The HUB.

Looking forward to seeing lots of you, somewhere over the rainbow...
