warnmcr: ground control to Major Tom

Word of Warning...
...ok so forgive me for the lousy subject, I'm feeling like a bit of a space cadet! I know, Major Tom's a dog, ok? The slightly odiferous but completely loveable star of Victoria Melody's upcoming show!

But before that, Contact's Flying Solo first week continues tonight with a new show from Domestic friend, Greg Wohead's The Ted Bundy Project (Fri 14 + Sat 15 Mar ) and Kaleider's You With Me (til 15 Mar). over in Leeds, Yorkshire Dance's Juncture Festival comes to a close on Saturday (15 Mar) with Wendy Houstoun's Stupid Women

Next week, continuing in a dance vein - there's Dancing Partners, featuring Company Chameleon at Blackpool Grand on Thu 20 and The Lowry on Fri 21;  Tempered Body Dance's It Goes Here Now at Z-arts also on Fri 21. More theatrically, Impulse Collective's Exposed on Tue 18 Mar and The Wardrobe Ensemble's 33 on Sat 22 Mar are both at Carriageworks, Leeds and Penny Dreadful's How To Be Immortal is at The Lowry (19-21 Mar)

Obviously in my completely unbiased opinion - the pick of the week is Victoria Melody's Major Tom on Thu 20 Mar - coincidentally a Word of Warning co-promotion with Contact's Flying Solo (but genuinely one of my favourite shows from Edinburgh 2013).

Also watch out for Jackie Hagan's Some People Have Too Many Legs (also at Contact 21+22 Mar).

The following week - w/c 24 Mar - sees the launch of FutureEverything;  the third Homegrown at Z-arts, and a Derelict Live/Talk with LEAP mini-festival in Preston.
Of course, we at Word of Warning couldn't be left out of the action - so will be popping up again with the very fragrant Two Destination Language at Contact.

For now I'm off for the final furlong of the National Portfolio application.  If you hear very loud strains of the Sugababes Push The Button emanating from the Hulme vicinity, that'll be me submitting... hope to see you at Major Tom!

warnmcr: flying solo...

Word of Warning...
Taking a quick break from application writing (those 'in the npo' will empathise) to look at all the things I can't permit myself to go to!

First up - a quick shout for Yorkshire Dance's Juncture Festival which launched in Leeds last night and I foolishly missed out last week.  Curated by Wendy Houstoun, there's loads of work on that brushes at the edges of dance and performance with a particular focus over this weekend (6-8 March).  Special picks, for me, are this afternoon's double bill of Grace Surman + Cathy Butterworth | Oliver Bray and next Saturday (15 Mar) with Wendy Houstoun's Stupid Women

Elswhere, still to come this week is Junk Ensemble's The Falling Song on Sat 8 March at Contact and Hannah Nicklin's Songs for Breaking Britain is at The HUB, Leeds on Sat 8 March.

Next week (w/c 10 March) things really kick off in Manchester with Contact's Flying Solo including Word of Warning's co-promotions of Sylvia Rimat's If You Decide To Stay and Kindle Theatre's A Journey Around My Skull on Wed 12 March; Rachel Mars's The Way You Tell Them on Thu 13 Mar plus the return of Jo Bannon's Exposure (one on one both Wed + Thu).  Also look out for our Domestic friend, Greg Wohead's The Ted Bundy Project on Fri 15 Mar plus the intrguing Kaleider's You With Me (12-15 Mar).

Elsewhere, in Manchester on Wed 12 is the regular Tales of Whatever at Gulliver's Ballroom and further afield have a look at mapdance's Mixed Bill on Tue 11 at Axis, Crewe and Ihirley MacNamara's Let Me Stay (12+13 Mar) at the Bluecoat.

The following week is big on dance - with Henry McGrath at Axis; Dancing Partners at Blackpool Grand and The Lowry;  Tempered Body Dance at Z-arts or more theatrically, Impulse Collective and The Wardrobe Ensemble at Carriageworks Leeds. Contact's Flying Solo continues til Sat 22 Mar - watch out for Jackie Hagan - and of course the highlight of this week will be Word of Warning's and Contact welcoming of Victoria Melody and her show-stealing Major Tom.

So I'm back to the closeted, monk-like world of writing - hoping you all enjoy the shows - not jealous at all!

warnmcr: addendum...Juncture Festival, Leeds

A quick additional mention for Yorkshire Dance's Juncture Festival which launches in Leeds tonight (Thu 6 March) with Gary Stevens, Lucy Suggate & Louise Wallinger Curated by Wendy Houstoun, there's loads of work on that brushes at the edges of dance and performance with a particular focus over this weekend (6-8 March).  Special pick of the weaken for me, is this Friday's double bill of Grace Surman + Cathy Butterworth | Oliver Bray

warnmcr: Marching on... (ouch!)

Word of Warning...
March tomorrow... really? How did we get to March already?!

Following a rousing Word of Warning christening of the STUN Studio @ Z-arts with Ira Brand, Nicki Hobday + Sara Cocker, we have a week 'off' (as if!) before resuming our incursions into Contact.

On other fronts, next week (w/c 3 March) look out for:  Vincent Dance Theatre's Motherland on Tue 4 March and Junk Ensemble's The Falling Song on Sat 8 March both at Contact.

Further afield, newcomer of the week is Derelict, the new programme brand at UCLAN's Media Factory in Preston, opening its Spring season on Wed 5 March with a doublebill of our very own Lowri Evans's The Secret Life of You and Me and Nicki Hobday + Sara Cocker's Age Concerns (wip).

Axis Arts Centre in Crewe has Cacalano, Cacalano + Cooper's Event on Thu 6 March; Junk Ensembles' The Falling Song is also at Live at LICA on Thu 6 March and Hannah Nicklin's Songs for Breaking Britain is at The HUB, Leeds on Sat 8 March. Also intriguing is The United Artists' For Their Own Good at Unity Liverpool on Tue 4 March.

The following week (w/c 10 March) things go a bit mad in Manchester with Contact's Flying Solo including Word of Warning's co-promotions of Sylvia Rimat, Jo Bannon, Kindle Theatre, Rachel Mars plus Greg Wohead and Kaleider. Elsewhere, have a look at mapdance at Axis, Crewe and Let Me Stay at the Bluecoat.

Have a good start of the new month and (possibly...or not) the end of winter...

warnmcr: the old and the new...

Word of Warning...

Following a rousingly operatic start to the Word of Warning season with Proto-type Theater, the week ahead sees us gear up to work in a brand new space, with some brand new work (one piece so new we haven't even seen it yet).  The space is so shiny and new, the wrapping's barely off, but our first outing to the STUN Studio at Z-arts on Wed 26 Feb with an ageing double-bill (the theme not the work!) with Ira Brand's A Cure For Ageing + Nicki Hobday + Sara Cocker's Age Concerns (work in progress).

Elsewhere, in Manchester, Kate Tempest's Brand New Ancients continues at Contact tonight Fri 21 and tomorrow Sat 22 Feb and, further afield, Selina Thompson's Dark and Lovely continues - at Union 105, Leeds and our very own Lowri Evans The Secret Life of You and Me is also in Leeds at The HUB tonight.  On Saturday there's also the LEAP Encounters in Lancaster City Centre and Instant Dissidence's Caramel at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford...

Next week, w/c 24 Feb, there's a huge swathe of work at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford all week including Lizi Patch, Jaye Kearney, Hannah Nicklin and Daniel Bye; on Tue 25 at Leeds Carriageworks there's Gary Winters + Claire Hind's Dream Yards
Gob Squad's Western Society is at LICA on Wed 26 Feb; Sleepdogs' The Bullet and The Bass Trombone is at Axis, Crewe on Thu 27 Feb; and White Rabbit's 366 Days of Kindness is at The Lowry also on Thu 27 Feb.

Of course, in my hugely biased opinion, the unmissable event of the week is our own Ira Brand |  Nicki Hobday + Sara Cocker doublebill at the STUN Studio on Wed 26 Feb.

The following week, look out for Cacalano, Cacalano + Cooper's Event at Axis; Junk Ensembles' The Falling Song at Live at LICA and Contact; Hannah Nicklin's Songs for Breaking Britain at The HUB, Leeds and special mention for Vincent Dance Theatre's Motherland at Contact.

Hoping lots of you will join us at Z-arts on Wednesday - head for the Atrium rather than the bar, where we'll be making a whole new 'social space' in our own inimitable fashion!

warnmcr: the good, the god and the start of the WoW season!

Word of Warning...

Amidst the howling gales, the gentle start to the season has also taken a more frantic turn.  Not only do we, at Word of Warning, kick off the season at Contact with Proto-type Theater's The Good, The God and The Guillotine on Tue 18 Feb but there's a real frenzy of work taking off all over the place.

In Manchester there's the second Assemble featuring Massive Owl at Antwerp Mansion on Wed 19; on Thu 20th there's Dance Manchester's Homegrown featuring Taciturn + Tmesis plus the Noise Above Noise live art event at The Penthouse; then thre's Kate Tempest's Brand New Ancients at Contact on Fri 21 + Sat 22 Feb.

Further afield, Selina Thompson's Dark and Lovely is at East Street Arts, Leeds (15-22 Feb); 12 Degrees North is at Live at LICA on Tue 18th; Flexer + Sandiland at Axis, Crewe on Thu 21; on Sat 22 there's the LEAP Encounters in Lancaster City Centre and Instant Dissidence's Caramel at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford... not to mention our very own Lowri Evans The Secret Life of You and Me at The HUB in Leeds on Fri 21.

The following week, w/c 24 Feb, there's a huge swathe of work at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford; Gob Squad at LICA; Sleepdogs at Axis; White Rabbit at The Lowry;
Of course, all that pales into insignificance (!) in the face of Word of Warning's first outing to the new STUN Studio at Z-arts on Wed 26th with a double bill featuring Ira Brand and our own Nicki Hobday + Sara Cocker.

So, hoping to see you at the visually stunning, Proto-type Theater on Tuesday - or failing that, back here at Z-arts the following week.

warnmcr: the days are getting longer...

Word of Warning...

So, as winter darkness starts to recede, the season is now getting going in earnest - and adrenalin's rising (even if there's no sign of Spring sap yet!)   In Manchester, Queer Contact is now in full swing (continuing until 15 Feb - with the first Mother's Ruin of the year tonight) whilst around the region next week there's a real midweek flurry:

On Tue 11 Feb, Liverpool welcomes a newcomer to the scene: The 1st4 platform  at Camp + Furnace.  Axis Arts Centre, Crewe has Tim Crouch + Andy Smith's What Happens To Hope at the End of the Evening and Live at LICA, Lancaster has Proto-type Theater's The Good, The God and The Guillotine (coming to Word of Warning/Contact Manchester 18 Feb).

Wed 12 Feb sees Sometimes We Play's We Can Be Heroes at the Lowry and the first Tales of Whatever of the year at Gullivers, Oldham Street, while Thu 12 Feb has Geddes Loom's Prelude to a Number at the Lowry (also on Fri 13); LEAP's Love Letters and Other Pointless Scribbles  at the Duke's, Lancaster (continues to Fri 13);  and Hofesh Schechter's Sun at Blackpool Grand Theatre.

The following week (w/c 17 Feb)  in Manchester sees the second Assemble, Kate Tempest's Brand New Ancients at Contact; further afield, 12 Degrees North is at Live at LICA; Flexer + Sandiland at Axis, Crewe and Instant Dissidence at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford.

Of course, without any sense of bias, the highlight of that week will be the start of the Word of Warning Spring 2014 programme, with Proto-type Theater's The Good, The God and The Guillotine at Contact on Tue 18 Feb!

Hope to see you all there!

warnmcr: it's all a bit queer

Word of Warning...

With Word of Warning's Spring 2014 season print now hitting the streets (we choose to call it moss green), we feel fully geared up to face the season...and if you believe that you'll believe anything... but before we kick off on 18 Feb here's the usual round-up of what's happening within reach of Manchester.

The week ahead, sees Contact kick off its season with Queer Contact(6-15 Feb). First up is Joey Arias & Kristian Hoffman's Lightning Strikes; also of interest may be Shortcuts 1 and 2 and Opera North's collaboration with the Tiger Lilies.

Further afield there's Flexer & Sandiland's Weightless on Wed 5 Feb at Live at LICA, Lancaster, Proto-type Theatre's The Good, The God and The Guillotine at Axis, Crewe (coming to Word of Warning/Contact Manchester 18 Feb) and Geddes Loom's Prelude to a Number at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford (7/8 Feb - also coming to the Lowry on 13 Feb).

The following week (w/c 10 Feb) also sees Tim Crouch + Andy Smith at Axis, Crewe; LEAP's Love Letters... in Lancaster; the first Tales of Whatever of the year (at Gullivers); and Hofesh Schechter at Blackpool Grand.

Finally, a quick reminder that you can support all those pitching for support at Re:Play's Pitch Party tonight, Fri 31 Jan at the Lowry.

Until next week...

warnmcr: Spring 2014 at Word of Warning

Word of Warning... here we go again!

So finally, after a small speedbump last week, Word of Warning's Spring 2014 programme is now online! This season you’ll mainly find us ensconced in Contact: kicking off the pre-Easter run on 18 Feb with the return of Proto-type Theater; followed by a series of highly varied one-handers as part of Contact's Flying Solo Festival including Rachel Mars, Kindle Theatre, Sylvia Rimat, Jo Bannon and Victoria Melody and her scene-stealing basset hound, Major Tom; rounding off with the florally fragrant Two Destination Language and the return of Turn. For those feeling deprived of the special touch of Word of Warning at Z-arts - on 26 Feb we're also trying out a brand new space in the building — the newly equipped STUN Studio - with a double bill on ageing, featuring Manchester’s own Nicki Hobday + Sara Cocker and Forest Fringe’s Ira Brand.

Before we get to all that, however, next week sees Motionhouse's Broken on 28 + 29  and Re:Play's Pitch Party on Fri 31 Jan both at the Lowry.  The marvellous Stacy Makishi's The Falsettos also returns to the North West, to Live at LICA, Lancaster on Thu 30 Jan.

Looking ahead, to the first week of Feb, there's Flexer & Sandiland at Live at LICA, Proto-type Theatre at Axis, Crewe (coming to Manchester 18 Feb) and Queer Contact kicks off at Contact (funnily enough) - don't miss the Joey Arias & Kristian Hoffman's Lightning Strikes ticket offer (quote SNL1979 and check out Klaus Nomi!)

Until next week...
