So here we are again at the start of yet another Edinburgh megafest. This year it is coloured, just a little, by the ending of Forest Fringe. If you happen to be in town on Fri 11 Aug, check out their final 'pass the torch' farewell at Cameo Cinema; as part of the Cameo Live Programme (6-26 Aug), which also includes Deborah Pearson, Mamoru Iriguchi and Chris Thorpe + mala voadora.
Without FF seeking out work is even more befuddling - so if you're really looking for a shortcut, just go to Summerhall... It is also a British Council Showcase year (21-26 Aug - a good week to be in Edinburgh) so you can also have a look at their selection.
If you want to dig a bit deeper, once again I've uploaded WoW's long list below. As ever please forgive errors and omissions - it *is* largely our own planning tool, so it may miss out things we've seen or that we know are coming to Manchester anyway - and we mainly steer clear of internationals as they're beyond WoW's programming paygrade!
For a snapshot, we will be spending a good amount of time at Summerhall and the things taking our fancy include:
Selina Thompson, Mark Thomas and Rachel Mars; some of the Canada Hub @ Kings Hall; and some of the Big in Belgium work at Upper Church @ Summerhall including Ontroerend Goed and Suzanne Grotenhuis, plus Action Hero at Codebase.
The Pleasance Courtyard could also be a worthwhile place to spend some time - look out for Touretteshero and Carnesky Productions. Underbelly venues have some interest, including LaPelle's Factory; while standing out at the Traverse, for me, is Wild Bore.
At the more physical end of the spectrum, Zoo venues' programmes include Liz Agiss, Aakash Odedra plus Imitating the Dog; and there's The Leith Volcano with Impermanence Dance Theatre and Volcano Theatre; plus lots on at DanceBase - for some less known names maybe try Keira Martin, Bill Cole + Gordon Monahan, Oona Doherty.
Of course, if you fancy supporting some Manchester and wider northern friends the roster includes Proto-type Theater, Powder Keg, Tin Can People,TransCreative, Eggs Collective, RashDash and Gracefool Collective - or of course, there's Forced Entertainment who have ascended the dizzy heights of the International Festival.
Please be aware that this is very much my picks, largely from paper - so don't hold it against me! Final tips - please check dates carefully with edfringe.com as you don't want to fall prey to random days off - and my main tip is to log-in edfringe.com, and use the favourites facility (you can then export your favourites as a handy spreadsheet and sort it as you please!)
Enjoy... and think of us as we'll be attempting the whole thing at breakneck speed - how many shows can you see in an 18 hour daytrip?
Best
