With
the sudden outbreak of adulting in the Government, it seems fitting to hit
pause on the cynicism - for now at least. Over in Leeds, the maturity
continues with the Ageless Festival, the same can't be said for us however, as we start to gear up for an outbreak of juvenility with Haphazard. But before that:
This weekend, Sweet Dreams is at Aviva Studios until 1 Sep. On the GM Fringe, Sam Lowe's The Imposter is at King's Arms on Sat 13 Jan.
In Leeds, the Ageless Festival takes place on Fri 12 + Sat 13 Jul with Susan Kempster + Lisa Kendall, Fevered Sleep + Company of People, Das Clarks + Jo Fong with Becky Davies, Two Destination Language and Carl Harrison.
Liverpool Arab Arts Festival also takes place (13-20 Jul). Alia & Dani In One Another's Presence at the Quaker Meeting House on Sat 13 Jul might be of interest.
Further afield Departure Lounge at Derby Theatre continues, tonight Fri 12 Jul.
Next week (w/c 15 Jul) on the Fringe there's Joshua Val Martin's With Love, Mr Gay on Tue 16 Jul at Social Refuge. Contact has Knock & Nash's Pillock on Wed 17 + Thu 18 Jul; and The Lowry has Brave Space (18-20 Jul).
Elsewhere, Tian Glasgow's Tomorrow is not Promised is at The LBT, Huddersfield on Wed 17 Jul.
Oranges + Stones is at The Unity on Thu 18 Jul as part of the Liverpool Arab Arts Festival.
Warrington Arts Festival (19-27 Jul) kicks off including Night People's Aphrodite's House Party on Thu 19 Jul and Lowri Evans's I'm Glad You Came on Sat 20 and Sat 27 Jul at Warrington Central Station.
The following week (w/c 22 Jul) we are back at Z-arts on Sat 27 Jul with the joyful chaos that is Haphazard.
Short Supply's Scratch is at Islington Mill on Thu 25 Jul and Slavs + Tatars' Transliterative Tease is at ESEA Contemporary on Sat 27 Jul. On the Fringe, HER Productions' Sunny Girl is at the New Adelphi 22-25 Jul); Kyra Scott's It Is What It Is is at The Kings Arms on Fri 26 + Sat 27 Jul; and Boyography is at Social Refuge on Sat 27 Jul.
Beyond Mancunia, in Warrington, Company Carpi's Disunited Jukebox is at the Parr Hall on Thu 25 Jul.
Look After Your Knees is at Leeds Playhouse on Fri 26 Jul.
Looking further ahead, Shakespeare North has A Caravan Named Desire 30 Jul- 1 Aug and Ridiculusmus's Alas! Poor Yorick 22-24 Aug.
Online, check out Melanie Wilson's Dreaming Species listening experience for headphones.
That just leaves the behemoth that is Edinburgh (2-26 Aug). This year, the usual hours of perusing has left me genuinely struggling to see wood for trees. There are very few artist names I recognise - which could be good or bad, but definitely make it a lucky dip. For what it's worth - my attempt to sieve through the listings for what I think might be worth a look is at the blog version of this mail. Aside from the International Festival, your safest bet is probably the Here & Now Showcase.
Keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter (X if you must) for short-notice performances.
And for the artists out there, the annual open call for proposals for Emergency is now open (deadline 2 Aug).
