warnmcr: week one at Hunt & Darton Cafe

Artist and academic Dani Abulhawa has challenged herself to try and visit the café everyday - here are her thoughts... keep reading to see if she makes it!

Day 1 – Thursday 5th March

I entered tentatively, unsure of what to expect and was greeted with a kind hello by two women wearing pineapple fascinators on their heads. “Are you taking-away or staying?”

I ordered a coffee, was asked to take and seat and told that it would be brought to me. I chose a two-person table against the wall and sat facing the door, adjacent to a couple who were at either end of bigger table, one eating a bowl of Alpen and the other tucking into a meat roll. The woman eating Alpen was familiar to me, but I couldn’t put my finger on how I knew her.

My coffee was served in a big circular cup with hearts all over it and a saucer. The milk was in a little jug in the shape of a cottage.

There was a very inviting table of cakes and several large chalk boards against the wall detailing things like, ‘breakages’, ‘takings’, ‘complaints’, and ‘covers’.

I was asked if I wanted to choose the next record to play and picked an exercise record by – I think – Jane Fonda.

On the tables were instructions for ordering, getting the attention of Hunt and Darton and rules of tea-drinking etiquette. There were also instructions for games you can play with the food.

When I paid I was given a loyalty card and received my first pineapple stamp.

This place is a bit out-of-the-ordinary, but still a working cafe peppered with absurdity, and then there are sudden moments of arrest, for example the moment when Hunt and Darton got up and stood in the centre of two tables (one of which was occupied by patrons) and performed a short signaling routine at each other across the café.

I thought about the fine line between ordinary café and theatrical performance that this project treads, and then I thought about how much of ‘ordinary’ life is also treading this line.

Day 2 – Friday 6th March

After getting back from work to Manchester train station, I decided to pop in again at the café. It was sexy day.

Hunt and Darton and the other people working in the café (whose names I don’t know yet) were all wearing aprons with naked torsos on them, and with a hole in the area around the crotch. Hunt mentioned that she liked these aprons because there was an ambiguity about the torso’s gender.

As it was sexy day there were two stand-out options on the cake table; one was a giant penis-shaped layer cake, complete with icing ejaculation, and the other was a tray of glorious pink nipple cakes (with cherries for nipples). I went for the penis, and in particular a slice from the balls end.

As I sat eating it, I struggled a bit, not able to completely shake the idea of eating actual penis from the cake penis I was eating – you eat with your eyes.  How much of the pleasure of eating, I wondered, is actually based on thoughts about the dish?

Day 3 – Saturday 7th March

I had completely forgotten that today was Pigeon Theatre’s take-over of the café, so not only did I get two cups of coffee and the biggest glass of chocolate and banana Nesquik, I also got to do some smell identification and memory tasks with Pigeon’s Anna Fenemore and Gillian Knox.

I was pleased to hear that the penis cake had been completely sold out. I was keen to find out which end people had gone for. Apparently the balls end was the most popular and I had a good discussion with Hunt and Darton in which we hypothesised the findings. The balls were covered in chocolate shavings, and constituted the bigger part of the cake, so we decided there wasn’t much scope for a psychoanalytic reading of people’s choices.

Today, my table had the delightful Scots Guard Captain and Bear ornaments, complete with green snooker-table tablecloth.

Day 4 – Sunday 8th March

I had a very short window for a trip to the café today.

I ordered a coffee and said I would like a piece of the Oreo cake that had been dutifully made after a young girl requested it the day before. As it was ‘You Do It Day’ I served myself.

Whilst I was there, a friend happened to come in with someone I didn’t know. I ended up sitting with them around the table that Alpen lady and her husband had been sat on earlier in the week.

Every time I’ve been in the café someone I know has been there. It’s strange, but then the café caters for both the geographically situated community of Manchester city centre (near the train station) as well as the performance/art/festival community who are more dispersed.

The mug I was given was in the shape of a large mouse head. I think it may have been the same mug that Alpen lady’s husband was drinking from, which was odd since I was also sat in his seat.

I kept thinking about one of the signs in the café on the wall. It reads ‘semi-socially engaged’. I like the way it comments upon an arts/performance jargon and suggests that the café adopts an undefined status as ‘socially engaged’, not proclaiming a particular kind of social efficacy or smugness.

warnmcr: in sickness and in health...

Word of Warning...
After an amazingly bonkers and busy Haphazard, it's a deep breath and off we go again...
SICK! Festival is already upon us and, with it, WoW is  branching out to co-present Hunt & Darton Cafe, already in residence on Piccadilly Approach (5-25 March Wed-Sun).  Pop-in for a brew and a side-order of art en route to the station, or check out the timetable. Over the next week you can catch Pigeon Theatre (Sat 7 Mar), Eggs Collective (Wed 11 Mar) and Sara Cocker + Lowri Evans (Fri 13 Mar) plus the possibility of surprise guests in the nightly Unhappy Hour (Wed-Sun 6-30-7.30pm)

Elsewhere in SICK! Festival: don't miss Lois Weaver's What Tammy Needs To Know About Getting Old and Having Sex tonight, Fri 6 March at Z-arts; and the last opportunities to catch the very wonderful Stacy Makishi's work with Contact Young Company's Under The Covers (tonight Fri 6 and tomorrow Sat 7 Mar).  Next week at the Lowry there's both Ridiculusmus's The Eradication of Schizophrenia in Western Lapland on Wed 11  + Thu 12 Mar and Chop Theatre's How To Disappear Completely on Fri 13 Mar; at the Whitworth, La Ribot's Laughing Hole on Thu 12 Mar (durational from 4pm); and at Contact, the hugely topical Nirbhaya on Sat 14 + Sun 15 Mar.

Beyond SICK! in Lancaster there's also the Hear Me Roar weekender (Fri 6-Sun 8 Mar at various venues) including tonight, Fri 6 Mar: Lowri Evans, Eggs Collective and Drunken Nights;  and on Saturday: Amy + Rosana Cade's Sister + Mother's Ruin.

It doesn't stop there...
And if that lot's not enough for you... coming up the following week in SICK! are Sue Maclaine, Zachary Oberzan, Action Hero, Caroline Bowditch + Edit Kaldor!

Me, I'm off to for a brew with Hunt & Darton!

warnmcr: haphazardly sick!

Word of Warning...
So, Word of Warning's spree of hyperactivity continues tomorrow, Sat 28 Feb, with Haphazard. From 12-4pm we will be filling Z-arts with random occurrences with everything from quirky quoits to a jungle jamboree and all for free, so please do drop in and join us - all ages more than welcome.

Elsewhere you can still catch DV8's John at the Lowry (tonight Fri 27 Feb - click here for ticket offer), Blast Theory's Too Much Information (27 Feb - 1 Mar - selling very fast) at the Royal Exchange and FutureEverything everywhere (25-28 Feb).  Further afield at the Unity, Liverpool you can also see David Rosenberg + Glen Neath's Fiction on Fri 27 + Sat 28 Feb.

Next week, SICK! Festival hits Manchester with a bang.  We at WoW are really happy to be co-promoting Hunt & Darton Cafe popping up on Piccadilly Approach (5-25 March) with a plethora of guest waiters.  Also in SICK! Festival: at Contact is Pieter Ampe's So You Can Feel on Tue 2 Mar; and Contact Young Company's Under The Covers (directed by Stacy Makishi) (4-7 Mar);  Chris Green's Prurience is on Wed 3 Mar at the Methodist Central Buildings: and Lois Weaver's What Tammy Needs To Know About Getting Old and Having Sex  is on Fri 6 March at Z-arts.

The Lowry is has 3 days of dance with Smallpetitklein's Within This Dust on Thu 5 + Fri 6 Mar and Jasmin Vardimon's Park on Sat 7 Mar. Sleepwalk Collective's Karaoke is at Axis, Crewe on Tue 3 Mar, and the Hear Me Roar weekender is in Lancaster including a Drunken Nights on Fri 6 Mar (at the Wagon & Horses pub allegedly!)

The following week is so busy it's almost impossible to unpick. SICK! Festival has Ridiculusmus, La Ribot, Chop Theatre and (beyond WoW's usual fare but still significant) the harrowing Nirbhaya.  Beyond that, amongst other things; The Lowry has Wim Wandekeybus's Ultima Vez, Reckless Sleepers are back in Cheshire; DV8 are in Blackpool and Rajni Shah + Andy Smith are in Lancaster.

warnmcr: the birds and the beasts... or Caution! Horses!

Word of Warning...
So, back in Manchester and back in harness and we're gearing up for a pretty full-on month or so.  This quiet half-term week comes to a close with Mammalian Diving Reflex's Nightwalks With Teenagers from Contact (til 22 Feb); and in Lancaster, Amy Sharrocks' Museum of Water is at the Storey Institute (also til 22 Feb).

Next week sees Word of Warning unbelievably busy:  starting on Tue 24 Feb, we trot into The Lowry for an equestrian double bill: Leentje Van de Cruys' Horse plus Whoaaaaa Steady!, made with collaborators from University of Salford.  We stay at The Lowry for Mark Thomas's Cuckooed on Wed 25 Feb - genuinely the best thing I saw in Edinburgh last year and a brilliant example of the marriage of performance and activism (if you're quick there are a very few tickets remaining).

We then move back to Z-arts for Haphazard, our second free all ages live art day on Sat 28 Feb.  It features Liz Clarke, Robert Foster, Julieann O'Malley, Leo Burtin, Peter Jacobs, Josh Coates, Rachel Ramchurn, Natasha Patel, Ultra Violets PLUS the return of the delightfully eccentric Levantes Dance Theatre and a bonus micro-herd of cows thanks to Lani Irving! We may also have surprise guest waiters in the cafe...

Manchester in general is dead busy - with DV8's John at the Lowry on Thu 26 + Fri 27 Feb, Blast Theory's Too Much Information at the Royal Exchange and FutureEverything everywhere (25-28 Feb - check out the opening gala, and Nyloïd).  Further afield at the Unity, Liverpool there's a chance to see David Rosenberg + Glen Neath's Fiction on Fri 27 + Sat 28 Feb.

The following week, in fact the following month, there's no let-up - with the opening of SICK! Festival in Manchester - a huge programme of work across multiple venues (week one features Pieter Ampe, Chris Green, Lois Weaver  + more) and which  includes WoW's co-promotion of Hunt & Darton Cafe (watch this space for the location reveal).  Also coming up is Jasmin Vardimon at the Lowry. Sleepwalk Collective at Axis, Crewe, and the Hear Me Roar weekender in Lancaster.

So off to take a deep breath over the weekend ahead of the ensuing madness

warnmcr: from the deepest south...

Word of Warning...
Writing from the depths of the South West, Manchester seems a fair way away... nevertheless, this week you can still catch Fergus Evans's Rove at the Lowry, tonight Fri 13 and tomorrow Sat 14 Feb; or in Lancaster, at the Duke's Playhouse, Chris Thorpe + Hannah Walker's I Wish I Was Lonely tonight, Fri 13 Feb and on Sunday, Rebecca Atkinson-Lord's Sunday Lunch Project at Bradford's Theatre in the Mill.

Next week there's a brief half-term hiatus, though you can catch Two Destination Language's Near Gone at Edgehill University on Tue 17 Feb;  Mammalian Diving Reflex's Nightwalks With Teenagers at Contact (20-22 Feb); and in Lancaster, Clod Ensemble The Red Chair is at Live at LICA on Thu 19 Feb, while Amy Sharrocks' Museum of Water is at the Storey Institute (20-22 Feb).

The following week (or 'Hell Week' as it's known in our office), parts Mancunian are unbelievably busy with DV8 at the Lowry, Blast Theory at the Royal Exchange and FutureEverything everywhere.  Word of Warning pops up at the Lowry (twice!) with the incredible Mark Thomas and a horsey double bill.  Not content with that the idiot programming WoW also saw fit to put on our second Haphazard, all ages live art day on Sat 28th at Z-arts!
So IF we survive and IF anyone's still talking to me, we'll see you there!

warnmcr: brrrrr... slip-sliding into Feb

Word of Warning...
Having failed miserably to brave the snowy Pennines to see Jamal Harewood last night (sorry!), I'm hoping to fare better getting to Liverpool for Tmesis Theatre's That's Amore at the Unity (tonight, Fri 30 + tomorrow, Sat 31 Jan)!

Next week as we skate into February, Lucy Hutson's Britney Spears Custody Battle vs. Zeus in Swan Rape Shocker is at Live Art Bistro in Leeds; and closer to home, there's Queer Contact's co-promotion with WoW of Amy + Rosana Cade's Sister (sold-out) followed by Eggs Collective Get A Round, both Thu 5 - Sat 7 Feb.
Also 5-7 Feb, intriguingly, over at Stage@Leeds there's David Shearing & Company's The Weather Machine.

The following week (w/c 9 Feb), you could easily be out every night of the week: with Tom Marshman, Ashley Knowles  and Kate O'Donnell at Queer Contact; Fergus Evans at the Lowry; Reckless Sleepers at Axis, Crewe; and Chris Thorpe + Hannah Walker in Lancaster.  And as a final heads-up, if anyone is craving a bit of big dance, Manchester Theatres has an offer for Richard Alston Dance on Tue 10 Feb at the Lowry!

warnmcr: picking up pace...

Word of Warning...
I can't believe it's Friday again already - January seems to be racing by at a rate of knots...

The performance world seems to be waking up: next week on Tue 27 Jan, Live at LICA, Lancaster have Third Angel's The Life and Loves of a Nobody; and the same night, at Edgehill University, there's Theatre Ad Infinitum's Light.

Thu 29 Jan sees Tim Crouch + Andy Smith's What Happens to the Hope at the End of the Evening at Contact; and, over in Leeds, at Live Art Bistro: Jamal Harewood's The Privileged.
Meanwhile in Liverpool, Tmesis Theatre's That's Amore is at the Unity (Wed 28 - Sat 31 Jan)

The following (w/c 2 Feb) week sees Lucy Hutson at Live Art Bistro in Leeds; and closer to home the launch of Queer Contact opening with the almost sold-out Amy + Rosana Cade's Sister (co-promoted by WoW), and an Eggs Collective late nighter.

And finally, if anyone is thinking of heading to Bristol for In Between Time IBT15 (12-15 Feb)... get a move on, tickets are going fast!

warnmcr: January blues

Word of Warning...
So... with the 'festive' season well and truly behind us and the bloom a bit faded on the shiny new year, it's back to business (or cynicism) as usual!

Word of Warning Spring 2015 programme is now live.  It's a very eclectic mix - from Amy+Rosana Cade's Sister at Queer Contact, some horsing around at the Lowry, a second bonkers all-ages Haphazard at Z-arts, and the 4th (yes fourth!) Turn at Contact.

Additionally WoW is delighted to be co-promoting Mark Thomas's Cuckooed at The Lowry (they've actually let us into the Quays for this one!) - best known as a stand-up and activist, and seemingly an odd choice for WoW, this piece and its predecessor were some of the best shows we've seen in Edinburgh over the past few years.  Cuckooed is so much in our kind of 'vein' that we really wanted to draw your attention to it - book fast as it will probably sell-out, but it's well worth it!

Also look out for our first venture into the world of catering in March!

Looking at the world beyond WoW... we are starting to piece together what Spring looks like:
On Tue 20 + Wed 21 Jan the Lowry has Random Dance's Atomos; on Thu 22 Jan, Josh Coates's Rot takes you on a mystery journey and, the same day, over in Leeds, Live Art Bistro has Brian Lobel's Purge.

The following week look out for Tim Crouch + Andy Smith at Contact; and Third Angel at Live at LICA, Lancaster; plus the intriguing Jamal Harewood at Live Art Bistro, Leeds.

And finally, if any of you fancies being involved in this madness, we are looking for our next paid intern! The criteria for the funding are quite strict, see full details here.
