warnmcr: addendum...

Not a proper Weekly Warning but just an updated issue with a couple of things that have come to my notice:

IRL:
This weekend Refract Festival is at Sale Waterside until 30 Jul with Off the Jacket's Withered Optimism on Fri 29 Jul and Ermini/Van Huynh's Glam and Facades on Sat 30 Jul.
Castlefield sees the return of Streets Ahead with Castlefield Follies on Sat 30 + Sun 31 Jul.
Meanwhile Contact has CYC with Gob Squad's While we were waiting something changed (until 30 Jul).
Further afield, The Holbeck, Leeds has Holly Beaseley-Garrigan's Opal Fruits on Sat 30 Jul.

Next week (w/c 1 Aug) Black Gold Arts' Whitworth Takeover happens on Sat 6 + Sun 7 Aug, including Chad Taylor's Closer To My Dreams.
Or you can travel to Stockton International Riverside Festival (4-7 Aug) for more outdoor arts or, the following week, to Leicester, for Journeys Festival (12-14 Aug).

Thereafter we at Word of Warning will be taking to the streets with Proud & Loud's Gambit on Sat 20 Aug... and you might want to check out Xhi Ndubisi's The Grand Pear Supper at Lonsight Art Space on Wed 17 Aug and Spill Yer Tea at Tapestry in Liverpool on Sat 20 Aug.

For details of my Edinburgh Fringe longlist got to last week's blog version of the Weekly Warning- but don't forget to check Edinburgh International Festival for our own Mandla's As British As A Watermelon and Akeim Toussaint Buck's Windows of Displacement.

Online:
Edinburgh Fringe also has an online programme which I'm yet to really study.
Greater Manchester Fringe Festival has an online programme you might want to check out, alongside the ongoing youtube.com/c/WordofWarning, Lowry DigitalHOMESCREENMIF Watch On DemandUnity Online, Sadlers Wells Digital Stage or CPT Digital.

Keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances and last chance for theEmergency (1 Oct) call for proposals (deadline 5 Aug).

I'll try an take that break now!

warnmcr: phew, wot a scorcher...!

For those of us old enough to remember 1976, the weather this week brought back some more innocent and less portentous memories... Now the heat crisis has abated, however temporarily, the prospect of seeing work is maybe a little more palatable, just in time for festival flurries...

IRL:

Next week (w/c 25 Jul) Mancunia is in mini festival mode: Greater Manchester Fringe continues with Leo & Hyde's Double Life  at Whitworth Locke (until 28 Jul); Refract Festival is at Sale Waterside until 30 Jul with John Osborne's John Peel's Shed on Wed 27 Jul;  Superfan Performance's Just Like Animals on Thu 28 Jul; Off the Jacket's Withered Optimism on Fri 29 Jul and Ermini/Van Huynh's Glam and Facades on Sat 30 Jul. Castlefield sees the return of Streets Ahead with Castlefield Follies on Sat 30 + Sun 31 Jul.

Meanwhile Contact has CYC with Gob Squad's While we were waiting something changed (28-30 Jul).

Further afield Unity Liverpool has Alex Roberts's No Place Like Home and The Holbeck, Leeds has Holly Beaseley-Garrigan's Opal Fruits.

Into August I've not spotted a lot to write about close to home. We at Word of Warning will be taking to the streets with Proud & Loud's Gambit on Sat 20 Aug... though you might want to check out Xhi Ndubisi's The Grand Pear Supper at Lonsight Art Space on Wed 17 Aug and Spill Yer Tea at Tapestry in Liverpool on Sat 20 Aug.

Beyond that it's a case of travelling - there's Stockton International Riverside Festival (4-7 Aug) for more outdoor arts or, in Leicester, there's Journeys Festival (12-14 Aug).

Then of course there is the behemoth that is Edinburgh...
First up, unusually, is Edinburgh International Festival with our own Mandla's As British As A Watermelonand Akeim Toussaint Buck's Windows of Displacement.

Moving on to more familiar territory  - the Fringe (5-29 Aug). Possibly unsurprisingly I'm finding it quite a funny year and failing to recognise many names, which may be a good or a bad thing, and makes my list even more of a lucky dip than usual. I also did my research a couple of weeks ago so there may be latecomers I've not scrutinised.

Timing-wise my tip would be w/c 22 Aug - largely because, for (relatively) safe bets, there's the Horizon Showcase (which replaced the British Council event). Beyond that, as ever, I'm focusing attention on Summerhall,Zoo + Pleasance, and tbh, the most interesting things I've spotted feel like they're at DanceBase.

For my own 30 hour whistlestop, on the shortlist is: emma + pjSarah Hopfinger w/ Alicia Jane TurnerLiz LeaYolanda MercyMarikiscrycrycrySung Im HerDan Daw,Emma Martin, Jo Fong + George OrangeHaley McGee, Aidan MoesbyLiv ElloVictoria MelodyCraig Manson and I would see the vacuum cleaner if I was there on the right day. Do the math... it doesn't leave much time for sleep! ;)

A tip for Edinburgh newbies: what I do is sign into my EdFringe account, and go through the site, finding by category + genre; and then by key venues.  Any show that might be interesting I add to My Favourites - then I export them all as a longlist spreadsheet from which I can plan. That longlist is below - both as pdf and Excel (so you can edit and sort as you please).

Unless something unmissable pops up the Weekly Warning might take a bit of a break in August (though expect a Gambit reminder!).

warnmcr: Hobson's choice...

What a difference a fortnight makes - from pecs flexing to skulking off with tail between legs, leaving an ever diminishing gaggle to squabble over who runs the country. The lack of choice needn't trouble us voters though, as we can do no more than look-on as our fate is decided by 200k paid-up party members...
If you need less depressing entertainment, in performance world, there's a small flurry over the next couple of weeks...

IRL:
Next week (w/c 18 Jul) Greater Manchester Fringe continues with Leo & Hyde's Double Life  at Whitworth Locke (20-28 Jul); HUMANHOOD's ∞ {Infinite} is at The Lowry on Thu 21 Jul; while Refract Festival is at Sale Waterside 21-30 Jul. Further afield Mandla's As British As A Watermelon is at Sheffield Theatres on Thu 21 Jul.

The following week (w/c 25 Jul) Refract in Sale has John Osborne's John Peel's ShedSuperfan Performance's Just Like AnimalsOff the Jacket's Withered Optimism and Ermini/Van Huynh's Glam. Contact has CYC with Gob Squad's While we were waiting something changed.
Further afield Unity Liverpool has Alex Roberts's No Place Like Home and The Holbeck, Leeds has Holly Beaseley-Garrigan's Opal Fruits.

After that things go pretty dead - so next week, I will do my attempt to make some sense of Edinburgh - maybe it'll help me make a final decision whether to go!

Online:
Thank you for getting us to our YouTube target - you can still see Helena Ascough's What a clown or my exciting take on the new NLPG!

    warnmcr: moobing on...

As our clown in chief flexes his pecs, you do wonder if it's part of this year's crop of pre-Edinburgh comedy warm-up gigs? Elsewhere we're heading into a July slow-down, but there's stll stuff to see...

    IRL:
This weekendDorcas Seb's  Vice Versa is at HOME on Fri 1 + Sat 2 Jul; while Greater Manchester Fringe runs 1-31 Jul. Meanwhile, in Liverpool, Leo & Hyde's Double Life is at the Unity (28 Jun-Jul); while over in Leeds, Yorkshire Dance hosts the Ageless Festival, including work by Emilyn Claid, Angus BalbernieEva Recacha + the Royale Dancehall Flamingoes. The following week (w/c 11 Jun) looks pretty quiet though Freddie Hayes's Potatohead  on Thu 14 Jul at the Kings Arms looks intriguing as does Curfew on sat 16 Jul at the Unity; while Daniel Kitson is in Chester, but sold-out.

Coming soon: in July, Humanhood's ∞ {Infinite} at The Lowry; Seren Marimba's Dawn at MMU; CYC with Gob Squad and Sale Waterside's Refract Festival; plus Mandla's As British As A Watermelon in Shefield.
In August, look out for a little invasion of public spaces courtesy of Proud & Loud Arts' Gambit; and the Emergency (1 Oct) call for proposals remains open until 5 Aug.

    Online:
If one more kind person would like to subscribe to our YouTube, I can shut up about it and you can see Helena Ascough's What a clown or my exciting take on the new NLPG
LIFT has a Digital Programme running until 10 July; Greater Manchester Fringe Festival also has an online programme alongside the ongoing Lowry DigitalHOMESCREENMIF Watch On DemandUnity Online,Sadlers Wells Digital Stage or CPT Digital.

As the summer lull sets in I might slow the frequency of these mails, but will be back sporadically when there's stuff to talk about and with the return of my futile attempt to dissect Edinburgh.

      warnmcr: grounded...
