warnmcr: roadmap to Mars...

As we contemplate life on mars while awaiting a Government roadmap off our sofas, we remain in a groundhog holding pattern. You can tell how stimulation starved we are when local Parish Council meetings and cat filters make it to national news. So following, just a quick check-in as there still isn't a lot out there that I can find in the coming weeks.

Word of Warning's next Domestic is scheduled for Wed 10 Mar - but is dependent on what artists want to show... so if you have a piece you want to suggest for it, please do so by next Wed 24 Feb.

Elsewhere, 26-28 Feb The Lowry has Best of BE Festival at home with Francesc Serra Vila's Recall on Fri 26 + Sat 27 Feb and Edurne Rubio + Maria Jerez's Shan Sui on Sun 28 Feb.  The Holden Gallery has Interruptions: Conway + Young Milk Report on Thu 4 Mar; Stacy Makishi's Church of the Latter Day Sinners continues (Sundays til 7 Mar). Liverpool Everyman + Playhouse has Petrichor 8-14 Mar; while MIF has Dream 12-20 Mar.

Possible real world outings worth keeping an eye on the roadmap for include C-O-N-T-A-C-T on Salford Quays via The Lowry; and
Compass Festival due to be siting events around Leeds in March.

Ongoing there's The Way Out from Battersea Arts Centre, Digital Stage from Sadlers Wells plus HOME and MIF's online content plus Graeae's Crips Without Constraints including Leanna Benjamin's The Gift directed by Cheryl Martin (until 23 May)

Please check out Word of Warning's YouTube channel for previous events and Domesticated our home for online video.

As ever, keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances. I'll be back with news, as and when there's something to say!

warnmcr: hanging around...

Thanks to all who attended Domestic - if you missed it, we've just released both October and January's editions on our YouTube channel. We're just exploring what and when the next one might be so we'll let you know when we know, but the rolling call remains open.

Elsewhere there are shoots of (online) activity popping up. Tonight, Fri 28 Jan the Lowry has Antigone Interrupted.

Tomorrow, Sat 30 Jan, there's an invitation to legally and virtually hang around on a Salford street corner via Proforma's LOITER - a virtual live exhibition, featuring works by Omid Asadi, Juliet Davis-Dufayard, Tink Flaherty, Parham Ghalamdar and Christian Selent.

From Sun 31 Jan there's also Stacy Makishi's Church of the Latter Day Sinners via Creative Folkestone, (every Sunday 31 Jan - 7 Mar).

Next week there's Open Online Theatre Festival with discussions Tue 2 + Wed Feb and performances Fri 5 + Sat 6 Feb; including work by Lauren Tucker, Clémence Debaig, Daisy Harrison, Reem Naamani, O.Pen Be.

Also 5-7 Feb Unity has Ugly Bucket's Good Grief; while the following week, Theatre Deli has Gash Theatre's Ghosts of Valentines Past on Fri 12 Feb.

There's new online content from We’re All Strangers Here from Stage@Leeds (31 Jan-28 Feb) and Interruptions from MMU Holden Gallery (3-10 Feb) plus Sale Waterside's Diverge Hub - including archive from live works including Victoria Firth's Touching Moments.

Ongoing there's The Way Out from Battersea Arts Centre, Digital Stage from Sadlers Wells plus HOME and MIF's online content.

As ever, keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances. I'll be back with news, as and when there's something to say!

    warnmcr: still at home...

So here we are in a whole new year and a whole new lockdown. It does feel like groundhog day with the same old stay at home graphics, and it could partly because it's January, but a quick (80 site) web-trawl, seems to show pickings out there are pretty slim. I can't say I'm surprised - for one, as a programmer am feeling pretty discombobulated by the schedule-postpone-reschedule-go digital cycle.

That said - because I obviously can't help myself, we at Word of Warning are plunging into the year with our latest Domestic, next Wed 13 Jan. 7 artists, 7 new works live from their homes - featuring Alice Connolly, Avital Raz, Loïs Soleil, Lydia Cottrell, Miray Sidhom, Mitzee, Voidance Company and hosted by Peader Kirk. It's free, though a donation is always welcome, and it would be great to see you - or, given it's zoom, at least to know that you're there ! Domesticated, our online home for domestic performance video is also still up and running so feel free to have a nosey around that too.

Elsewhere, most things I can find are pre-recorded, but a few things to check out over the coming weeks are:
Over the next 10 days, if you can handle the New York time difference, there's Under the Radar 2021from the Public Theater (until 17 Jan);and, back on UK time, Unlimited Festival (15-17 Jan) from the Southbank.
Thereafter there's Everything is Absolutely Fine on 22 Jan from The Lowry, We’re All Strangers Here from Stage@Leeds (31 Jan-28 Feb), Interruptions from MMU Holden Gallery (3-10 Feb).
Ongoing there's 4:3 a film by Amy Pennington from Heart of Glass, The Way Out from Battersea Arts Centre, Digital Stage from Sadlers Wells plus HOME and MIF's online content.

Finally, as a bit of a curveball, this weekend (8-10 Jan) you can also catch a (rather pricey) limited streaming of David Bowie's final work, Lazarus

As ever, keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances. I'll be back with news, as and when there's something to say!

    warnmcr: housewarming...

The Govt's levelling up agenda could now mean maintaining a high Tier from the bottom of the European cliff - but, never fear, theatre is obviously ok as Shakespeare has been vaccinated... Amid all the uncertainty, incredibly, there are still a few definite (or possible) cultural options out there:

HOME has Sh!t Theatre's Sh!t Actually (12-21 Dec - livestreaming on Sat 12 Dec) and, for the young, Le Gateau Chocolat's Duckie (on demand from 16 Dec).
MIF has Riz Ahmed's Long Goodbye online on Sat 19 Dec (bookings open 1 Dec).
NIAMOS has Letsby Avenue (20-23 Dec online, and in person if Tier permits)
Again, should Tier permit, The Lowry is still aiming to run Six live (19 Dec - 17 Jan), or if it's trad panto you're after, the Manchester Opera House is aiming to run Sleeping Beauty (24 Dec - 10 Dec)

Meanwhile, we, at Word of Warning, are offering a digital housewarmer for the not so festive season in the shape of Domesticated, an online home for domestic performance videos, opening its door today. Designed by Ghost and John, our first houseguests are: Beth Clayton, Freddie Watkins, Heather Bandenburg, Kellie Colbert & Deborah Newton, Mahboobeh Rajabi, Nicholas Tee, Oliver Ford, Sandra Bouguerch.

This is probably one just for the artists here, unless anyone else is fascinated by the finer details of funding schemes(!): this coming Monday (14 Dec 3pm) we are doing Project or Process... or Strictly Come Funding, a slightly playful look at which ACE fund (NLPG or DYCP) better suits which kind of work.

As the countdown to humbugfest looms, I'm going to give your inboxes a rest for a few weeks but will be back early in the New Year with news of our next live Domestic (planned for 13 Jan). As ever, keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances.

I'll be radically changing my view for the next few weeks (from laptop screen to TV screen); and while I can't invite anyone round to my actual home for xmas, please do visit our online one at Domesticated.

    See you in 2021!

warnmcr: tiers of a clown (pt2)...

Hi, ho, hi, ho; back to Tier 3 we go - or 3plus as it appears to be - no theatre, no cinema, no restaurants... but you can go shopping... To draw on the govt's rhetoric of cliché, the faint light at the end of the tunnel, sniff of cavalry etc etc is that it's reviewed fortnightly so there's a small chance we might sneak out just in time for everything to close down for the season of corona-giving.

If you're desperate for a festive show, Six at The Lowry is hanging on in there in hope; or, Chester Storyhouse is due to reopen its xmas show as soon as lockdown lifts (but of course we're urged not o travel from Tier 3 to Tier 2)

    Otherwise, it's all online:
This weekend: tonight, Fri 27 Nov, HOME has David Hoyle's A Grand Auction of My Life (Fri 27 Nov) both live; while Homemakers continues.
Ongoing to 4 Dec, Drake Music hosts On The Air - new work from their resident artists including Gareth Cutter's Anxious Mansions
    also tonight Fri 27 Nov.
DaDaFest Translations Festival runs online from today, 27 Nov until 2 Dec with a mix of pre-records and discussions, including new work by Chanje KundaAlexandrina HemsleyNicola Smith and many more.
Action Hero are also celebrating 15 years with a series of online commentaires - the first went up yesterday.

    Next week: on Mon 30 Nov, HOME has Louise Orwin's Your Favourite Scary Movie;
From 2-4 Dec NSCD has New Ground; while Project Intimacy runs from Leeds Playhouse 6-20 Dec (bookings by 4 Dec).
For the young Contact has Virtual Forest of Forgotten Discos on Sat 5 Dec.

The following week HOME has Seayoncé's Déjà Voodoo Tue 8+ Wed 9 Dec; followed by Sh!t Theatre's Sh!t Actually (12-21 Dec) and, for the young, Le Gateau Chocolat's Duckie (14-23 Dec) (I guess there's a chance the last two might be live after 16 Dec).
MIF has Riz Ahmed's Long Goodbye on Sat 19 Dec (bookings open 1 Dec).

    warnmcr: suspended animation...

On this particularly lacklustre, mid-lockdown morning, my diary is curiously empty - reminding me that we should have been in full production for the 21st Emergency tomorrow. That said, our own form of suspended animation doesn't come close to that of those left hanging, poised to do live xmas shows...

Meanwhile, online tonight, Fri 20 Nov, The Lowry has Victor Esses + Yorgos Petrou's Unfamiliar at Home; while if you fancy an early show, on Sunday TomYumSim's A Suffocating Feeling is on in Melbourne at 10am (GMT)!

Next week, there's a fusion of the live, pre-recorded and discursive:
HOME has Daniel Kitson's Dot.Dot.Dot (24-26 Nov) + David Hoyle's A Grand Auction of My Life (Fri 27 Nov) both live; while Homemakers continues.
In discursive territory, on Wed 25 + Thu 26 Nov, Contact hosts LINK-UP, a series of conversations with Queer Contact artists including Mandla Rae + Mark Croasdale.

From 26 Nov to 4 Dec, Drake Music hosts On The Air - new work from their resident artists including Gareth Cutter's Anxious Mansions.

    warnmcr: rocky horror show...

... with the US warm + fuzzies starting to dissipate, it's nice of our (unelected) leadership seemingly to be following suit by skulking back to Barnard Castle - all we need is some kind of E-U-turn and Friday the 13th won't be so much of a horror show...

So to business - I wasn't intending to write this week but I've realised there are a few things worth mentioning, so in brief:
The remainder of HOME's November programme is livestreaming: Bertrand Lesca + Nasi Voutsas's The End is on tonight Fri 13 + Sat 14 Nov; High Rise eState of Mind  is next week (18-19 Nov)and the following week, Daniel Kitson's Dot.Dot.Dot (24-26 Nov) + David Hoyle's A Grand Auction of My Life (Fri 27 Nov); while Homemakers continues, with new content.

Salford University has Watch Us Dance tonight Fri 13 Nov; while The Lowry has Victor Esses + Yorgos Petrou's Unfamiliar at Home on Fri 20 Nov. Further ahead, DaDaFest Translations Festival runs online 27 Nov - 2 Dec.

Liverpool Everyman + Playhouse has the Homotopia Double Bill: Sound Cistem + S/he/it happens online either tonight and/or tomorrow night - both seem possible according to different bits of their website (I would check but there's no way of phoning).

I'll be back when I spot something to say, as ever keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances.

    warnmcr: remember, remember...

... the fifth of November... As last night's firework smoke clears to reveal unseasonable sunshine, the irony of locking us down on the anniversary of the most famous attempted act of sedition in English history seems to have been lost - or has it..?

Anyway, since it's all back online, a very quick word: as some of you will have seen via socials, I put out an update flagging that
we have reluctantly postponed Emergency until Spring. It was entirely conceived for live presence, and would make a very poor livestream, so we're not doing that; but we are working on the possibility of some tasters of it, Domestic-style, and will let you know details as we figure them out!

The remainder of HOME's November programme is also going online: Bertrand Lesca + Nasi Voutsas's The End (12-14 Nov). Homemakers continues, with new content.

Liverpool Everyman + Playhouse has Daniel Kitson's Dot.Dot.Dot online (4-7 Nov); while an online version of the Homotopia Double Bill: Sound Cistem + S/he/it happens is tbc).

CLAY's Chasm has Mystical Femmes' A lecture on how to be intimate online tonight, Fri 6 Nov; and Arden School of Theatre is streaming a doublebill made in collaboration with 70/30 Split + Tmesis Theatre also tonight, Fri 6 Nov via their facebook.
Fuel Theatre's The Kids Are Alright  runs until 10 Nov. Salford University has Watch Us Dance on Fri 13 Nov.

Not that we're involved at all, but a particular mention goes to Wayne Steven Jackson's From Me To Us on Thu 12 Nov!

Since live performance has gone away again, I imagine this Weekly Warning will go back to being a bit more sporadic... basically it'll pop up when it seems like there's enough to say! As ever keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances.

It was nice of the Americans to lay on a massive durational piece of Live Art to occupy us in in lockdown - catch it while you can on a news channel near you - no end date announced though it could run and run...

warnmcr: update - tricks, few treats...

So I was wrong - the scary clowns did have an enormous Halloween trick up their sleeves... so just a quick correction and update!

    IRL
HOME has Javaad Alipoor's The Believers Are But Brothers, tonight, Tue 3 Nov and tomorrow Wed 4 Nov. The remainder of their November programme is going online with tickets available from today.

At Liverpool Everyman + Playhouse Daniel Kitson's Dot.Dot.Dot is online (4-7 Nov), while it's not clear what's happening with the Homotopia Double Bill: Sound Cistem + S/he/it happens on Sat 14 Nov).

We have reluctantly had to postpone Emergency until Spring, but will let you know plans for upcoming Domestic-style activity once we've figured them out!

OnlineHOME's Homemakers continues, with new content, including Stacy Makishi's Homeward (house) Bound (5-7 Nov, now sold-out)
CLAY's Chasm has Mystical Femmes' A lecture on how to be intimate online on 4 + 6 Nov
Wayne Steven Jackson's From Me To Us is on Thu 12 Nov; Salford University has Watch Us Dance on Fri 13 Nov; and you might want to check out Fuel Theatre's The Kids Are Alright  until 10 Nov.

warnmcr: no tricks, a few treats...

On this most mischievous of nights, the scary clowns in Westminster haven't imposed any new tricks, so performances in Tier 3 continue. Our own do we, don't we dilemma has come down on the side of going for it, so we've now announced the artists for Emergency; and I'm adopting a Doris Day attitude... which, if you know me, is probably spookier than anything Halloween might bring!

Coming up IRL: This weekend brings your last chance to see Petrichor, a live VR and online experience at The Lowry (until 1 Nov), while Yellow Earth Academy's Signal Fires is also both in town and online on Sat 31 + Sun 1 Nov.
Next week, HOME has Javaad Alipoor's The Believers Are But Brothers (3-5 Nov) and, the following week, Bertrand Lesca + Nasi Voutsas's The End (12-14 Nov)

Since travel between Tier 3s seems to be a grey area, it might be worth mentioning that Liverpool Everyman + Playhouse has Daniel Kitson's Dot.Dot.Dot (4-7 Nov) and a Homotopia Double Bill: Sound Cistem + S/he/it happens on Sat 14 Nov.

Online: LevyFringe  has Janet Charlesworth /Proud + Loud Arts' Article 19 UNCRPD tonight, Fri 30 Oct. Ad Finitum's Where You Are festival runs until 1 Nov; HOME's Homemakerscontinues, with new content, including Stacy Makishi's Homeward (house) Bound (5-7 Nov, now sold-out)
