warnmcr: virtual normality...

So, incredibly, it's August already - no idea how that happened. There's an air of normality in the usual performance slowdown and the dawning of Edinburgh but scratch the surface and it's all a bit virtual...

IRL
Watch our for the Cap & Dove travelling micro arts centre - visiting different Greater Manchester locations most weekends from 7 Aug - 2 Oct and including work from Joshua Sofaer, Afreena Islam, Jenny Gaskell, Mark Croasdale, Chanje Kunda, Megan Griffith.

HOMEGROUND is ongoing and has RashDash's Look At Me, Don't Look At Me  on Fri 13 Aug; while in Salford, The Lowry has the Big Top in the Park (11-21 Aug) and the Quays Festival takes place 14/15 Aug.

Of course, August is the time for the annual theatrical migration northwards, though it'll be another year without a visit to Tebay for me. At a very rapid perusal of the Edinburgh listings, while there is real life activity happening, not a vast amount caught my eye IRL - a couple of things at Summerhall: Sex Education Xplorers (S.E.X.) by Mamoru Iriguchi and Community Circle – Trevor Lock; plus from Dancebase Jian Yi, Something Smashing, Fran.K and Sheen in the Buff: Late, Live and Unwrapped. In the more mainstream field, both Edinburgh International Festival and  The Traverse have some in person work.

Online:
HOME's HOMEMAKERS is still running - look out particularly for Michael Pinchbeck's Cyclical on Sat 14 Aug (bookable 15 min slots. There's also still MIF Watch On Demand.

And now for the Edinburgh online list - apologies for the table format, it's the only way I could get the data out - here are the things that caught my eye at first glance, grouped by promoter, plus there's also the Shedinburgh platform to have a look at.

Summerhall
Cheryl Martin – One Woman
Mele Broomes and collaborators featuring Divine Tasinda and Kemono L.Riot: Grin
Varjack-Lowry - iMelania
Darkfield - Knot: The Trilogy
mandla rae – as british as a watermelon
Sally Charlton - Mother's Milk
MALAPROP Theatre WSTL: Epistles

Horizon Festival
Botis Seva / Far From The Norm - BLKDOG Part 1
Brownton Abbey: Talk Show
Requardt&Rosenberg Future Cargo
Janine Harrington - Screensaver Series
Every Dollar is a Soldier / With Money You’re a Dragon

Dancebase/ZooTV
Start to Finnish in association with Carl Knif Company. Fugue in Two Colors
Red Note Ensemble and Matthew Hawkins - Iconnotations
From Start to Finnish, with Johanna Nuutinen + CO - Opia
Graeme Leak - SAVED

Pleasance
Arthur Smith: SYD
Jodie Irvine - GOBBY
Natasha Brown - I Am (Not) Kanye West
Sian Clarke Experience

Various
GalataPerform - Deserted Shores / Negative Photographs
Caroline Laurin-Beaucage and Montréal Danse - Ground Unplugged
Ana Bayat - Mimi's Suitcase
Joanna Griffin - Miss Honey
Sébastien Provencher and Mathieu Leroux - Bones and Wires

As ever, have a look at Word of Warning's YouTube channel for previous events and Domesticated our home for online video. Keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances. Also keep your eye on Manchester Independents - 22 new supported works and a host of other new independent work, emerging between now and October.

I'll be back in September, with a look at what hopefully is more like an Autumn season - look out for a sneaky Emergency date announcement meanwhiles.

warnmcr: back to reality...

Welcome back to what I should possibly now call the Monthly Moaning. We've had a few distracting real-world delocation issues to contend with the past few weeks but I'm attempting to peek my head back over the parapet. The absurdly coined 'freedom day' may have been postponed, but there is still a bit of life out there...

IRL:
The Royal Exchange is back up and running with Bloody Elle (til 17 Jul) and HOMEGROUND is ongoing  - look out for TransVegas Live on Sat 10 Jul and David Hoyle's Rebellion on Fri 23 Jul. For families, there's Hulme is Where The Art Is tomorow Sat 26 Jun, featuring dance from Company Chameleon

Of course MIF (1-18 July) is about to kick off - for obvious reasons there's limited theatrical live performance: Boris Charmatz's Sea Change would be my top pick (returns only); keep an eye out for The Walk (18 Jul) when details are released; there's Notes on Grief at Manchester Central (5-17 July) or for families at Great Northern Warehouse, there's The Global Playground (2-18 Jul). Of the installation/exhibtion work Arcadia at The Factory has some slots in the wee small hours of Sun 11 Jul; Laure Prouvost's The Long Waited, Weighted Gathering at Manchester Jewish Museum (2-18 Jul) caught my eye; Poet Slash Artist at HOME (2-18 Jul).

Contact Young Company, High Rise Theatre + Level Up's Saturnalia takes to ProjektsMcr skatepark (8-10 July) and The Lowry Uncut - CAT showcase is on Sun 11 Jul. Waterside Sale's Refract 21 is 22-31 Jul including some indoor comedy + theatre and outdoor performance from Kapow Dance, Gravity + Levity, Kate Flatt Projects + Hawk Dance. Fabiola Santana's A Home for Grief soundwalk runs from Contact 29-31 Jul while Thick Skin Theatre have 2 soundwalks: Keep Going Then Vanish (from Cross Street) and Monuments (from Cutting Room Square) available til October.

While us Mancs aren't supposed to be travelling... in Lancaster French Mottershead's Waterborne runs til this Sunday (27 Jun) and Fabiola Santana A Home for Grief soundwalk runs from Sat 26 Jun.
In Liverpool, Capstone Theatre has The Disappearing of Vincent Gambini on Sat 3 Jul + Fabiola Santana's A Home for Grief soundwalk runs from Unity 13-17 Jul. AND Festival also has a series of real world experiences on Merseyside from now until 11 Jul.
In Leeds, Yorkshire Dance has a series of Climate Encounters performances 2+3 Jul and Compass Festival is ongoing with work in July from Joshua Sofaer, Etheridge + Persighetti and Amy Sharrocks.

Online:
Focus has definitely shifted back towards the physical world, but there's still plenty of digital content out there.
HOME's HOMEMAKERS programme has plenty - look out particularly for Michael Pinchbeck's Cyclical on Sat 3 Jul (bookable 15 min slots.
There's also the full MIF Online Programme and Caitlin Gleeson's One Foot In Front Of The Other.
And the ongoing online AND Festival (27 May -11 July).

warnmcr: hug it out...

So here we are (allegedly) on the brink of the big one... the decriminalisation of hugging!
More relevant to this missive, Indian variant-willing, in person art returns both indoors and out. Buildings are reopening, bit by bit - most of the galleries seem to be opening from Wed 19 May (with shortened hours); theatres are a much more mixed bag...

We at WoW are tiptoeing back with a studio livestream: in 2020 we presented Tania Camara's Oreo Variations, a choreographic development of one section of Tania's work for livestreaming. Rejoin us on Wed 26 May for Oreo Prelude, a new livestream of unseen material, in collaboration with In Between Time, Bristol, ahead of developing a version for an in person audience.

In person (IRL) - I haven't found a lot of new things since the last mail - so mainly to recap:
Waterside Arts kicks off from the 17 May, with a live programme for Pride in Trafford including Yours Sincerely on Tue 18 May; Disco Tea Party on Thu 20 May; Matthew Bellwood's A Perfect World on Fri 21 + Sat 22 May; Hawk Dance's A Moment + Making Waves both on Sat 22 May. They also have Emergence Dance Tour on Fri 28 May.
The Lowry has C-O-N-T-A-C-T on Salford Quays and in Central Manchester (18-27 May).  SICK! is offering the Soundpaths audio walk through Moston + Harpurhey (from 19 May).
In Lancaster, The Duke's has Petrichor on Fri 21 May; Rebeeca Atkinson-Lord's The Class Project on Thu 27 May and Avital Raz's My Jerusalem on Fri 29 May.
NEW: Clay in Leeds has Alicia Radage's Quake on Sat 22 May
Liverpool Biennial is entering a new gallery phase from 19 May. Compass Festival continues with a series of works popping up around Leeds;

Arden School of Theatre's UnTapped Festival is online via Contact on Thu 20 + Fri 21 May
Take Me Somewhere Festival (21 May - 5 June) has a massive online programme including the Contact commissioned Mele Broome's Wrapped Up In This on Sat 29 May; and, edging into June, Buzzcut Festival (3-5 June).
The Holden Gallery's Interruptions has Harold Offeh and Michelle Williams Gamaker's The Intersectional Hydra from Thu 27 May; while Independendent Dance has Mary Pearson's How To Be Afraid on Fri 28 May
AND Festival takes place (27 May -11 July) mainly online but with some events around Manchester Ship Canal + the River Mersey later on.

While HOME is physically reopening from 17 May for film and exhibitions, for performance it's a case of checking out the online content, including, as part of PUSH, Superhero Alter Ego.

warnmcr: a right royal domestic drama...

So here we are, very nearly a year on and still in our homes. The so-called roadmap won't meander us back to in person performance til May at the earliest, so if you want a break from the Windsor soap opera, online it is.

Word of Warning's latest Domestic takes to your screens next Wednesday 10 Mar: medication and make-up, crossed wires and chromatophilia, prestidigitation and everyday fantasy hotline... all from our homes to yours. Featuring Eleanor May Blackburn, Pelican Theatre, Tom Cassani, TomYumSim, Vân Bùi and hosted by Peader Kirk.

Elsewhere, tonight Fri 5 Mar, The Lowry is showing Protein's May Contain Food with live Q&A; plus there's An Absurdist Archive of Isolation (5-7 Mar).
Sun 7 Mar is the last chance for Stacy Makishi's Church of the Latter Day Sinners. One-offs inlcude a european tip on Sun 7 Mar: Milo Rau's La Reprise: Histoire du Théâtre (7pm GMT); and Indoors Too Much's Learning to Swim on an Ironing Board on Fri 12 Mar via Contact.
Longer running: Liverpool Everyman + Playhouse has Petrichor 8-14 Mar; MIF has Dream 12-20 Mar plus there's Wayne Steven Jackson's From Me to Us  (15-21 Mar).
At the end of the month, Malandra Jacks Arty Farty is on Thu 25 Mar, via MIF; and Bert & Nasi's Hello on Fri 26 Mar via The Lowry. Yorkshire Dance has RE:FRESH dance platform (24-27 Mar), including 4 sharings (scroll down to 24 Mar); while The Met, Bury has Lip Service'sChâteau Ghoul on 31 Mar + 1 Apr.

Possible real world outings worth keeping an eye on remain C-O-N-T-A-C-T on Salford Quays via The Lowry; plus Liverpool Biennial kicks off on 20 Mar - and we are possibly allowed to travel from 29 Mar, unfortunately not soon enough for those of us in Manchester to see ZU-UK's Pick Me Up and Hold Me Tight (19-28 Mar) as part of Compass Festival in Leeds.

Ongoing there's The Way Out from Battersea Arts Centre, Digital Stage from Sadlers Wells plus online content from HOME (including, as part of PUSH, Superhero Alter Ego) and MIF. There's also Graeae's Crips Without Constraints including Leanna Benjamin's The Gift directed by Cheryl Martin (until 23 May); and Still House In The Letting Go or you can replay last year's Shedinburgh.
Please also check out Word of Warning's YouTube channel for previous events and Domesticatedour home for online video.

warnmcr: roadmap to Mars...

As we contemplate life on mars while awaiting a Government roadmap off our sofas, we remain in a groundhog holding pattern. You can tell how stimulation starved we are when local Parish Council meetings and cat filters make it to national news. So following, just a quick check-in as there still isn't a lot out there that I can find in the coming weeks.

Word of Warning's next Domestic is scheduled for Wed 10 Mar - but is dependent on what artists want to show... so if you have a piece you want to suggest for it, please do so by next Wed 24 Feb.

Elsewhere, 26-28 Feb The Lowry has Best of BE Festival at home with Francesc Serra Vila's Recall on Fri 26 + Sat 27 Feb and Edurne Rubio + Maria Jerez's Shan Sui on Sun 28 Feb.  The Holden Gallery has Interruptions: Conway + Young Milk Report on Thu 4 Mar; Stacy Makishi's Church of the Latter Day Sinners continues (Sundays til 7 Mar). Liverpool Everyman + Playhouse has Petrichor 8-14 Mar; while MIF has Dream 12-20 Mar.

Possible real world outings worth keeping an eye on the roadmap for include C-O-N-T-A-C-T on Salford Quays via The Lowry; and
Compass Festival due to be siting events around Leeds in March.

Ongoing there's The Way Out from Battersea Arts Centre, Digital Stage from Sadlers Wells plus HOME and MIF's online content plus Graeae's Crips Without Constraints including Leanna Benjamin's The Gift directed by Cheryl Martin (until 23 May)

warnmcr: hanging around...

Thanks to all who attended Domestic - if you missed it, we've just released both October and January's editions on our YouTube channel. We're just exploring what and when the next one might be so we'll let you know when we know, but the rolling call remains open.

Elsewhere there are shoots of (online) activity popping up. Tonight, Fri 28 Jan the Lowry has Antigone Interrupted.

Tomorrow, Sat 30 Jan, there's an invitation to legally and virtually hang around on a Salford street corner via Proforma's LOITER - a virtual live exhibition, featuring works by Omid Asadi, Juliet Davis-Dufayard, Tink Flaherty, Parham Ghalamdar and Christian Selent.

From Sun 31 Jan there's also Stacy Makishi's Church of the Latter Day Sinners via Creative Folkestone, (every Sunday 31 Jan - 7 Mar).

Next week there's Open Online Theatre Festival with discussions Tue 2 + Wed Feb and performances Fri 5 + Sat 6 Feb; including work by Lauren Tucker, Clémence Debaig, Daisy Harrison, Reem Naamani, O.Pen Be.

Also 5-7 Feb Unity has Ugly Bucket's Good Grief; while the following week, Theatre Deli has Gash Theatre's Ghosts of Valentines Past on Fri 12 Feb.

    warnmcr: still at home...

So here we are in a whole new year and a whole new lockdown. It does feel like groundhog day with the same old stay at home graphics, and it could partly because it's January, but a quick (80 site) web-trawl, seems to show pickings out there are pretty slim. I can't say I'm surprised - for one, as a programmer am feeling pretty discombobulated by the schedule-postpone-reschedule-go digital cycle.

That said - because I obviously can't help myself, we at Word of Warning are plunging into the year with our latest Domestic, next Wed 13 Jan. 7 artists, 7 new works live from their homes - featuring Alice Connolly, Avital Raz, Loïs Soleil, Lydia Cottrell, Miray Sidhom, Mitzee, Voidance Company and hosted by Peader Kirk. It's free, though a donation is always welcome, and it would be great to see you - or, given it's zoom, at least to know that you're there ! Domesticated, our online home for domestic performance video is also still up and running so feel free to have a nosey around that too.

Elsewhere, most things I can find are pre-recorded, but a few things to check out over the coming weeks are:
Over the next 10 days, if you can handle the New York time difference, there's Under the Radar 2021from the Public Theater (until 17 Jan);and, back on UK time, Unlimited Festival (15-17 Jan) from the Southbank.
Thereafter there's Everything is Absolutely Fine on 22 Jan from The Lowry, We’re All Strangers Here from Stage@Leeds (31 Jan-28 Feb), Interruptions from MMU Holden Gallery (3-10 Feb).
Ongoing there's 4:3 a film by Amy Pennington from Heart of Glass, The Way Out from Battersea Arts Centre, Digital Stage from Sadlers Wells plus HOME and MIF's online content.

Finally, as a bit of a curveball, this weekend (8-10 Jan) you can also catch a (rather pricey) limited streaming of David Bowie's final work, Lazarus

As ever, keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances. I'll be back with news, as and when there's something to say!

    warnmcr: housewarming...

The Govt's levelling up agenda could now mean maintaining a high Tier from the bottom of the European cliff - but, never fear, theatre is obviously ok as Shakespeare has been vaccinated... Amid all the uncertainty, incredibly, there are still a few definite (or possible) cultural options out there:

HOME has Sh!t Theatre's Sh!t Actually (12-21 Dec - livestreaming on Sat 12 Dec) and, for the young, Le Gateau Chocolat's Duckie (on demand from 16 Dec).
MIF has Riz Ahmed's Long Goodbye online on Sat 19 Dec (bookings open 1 Dec).
NIAMOS has Letsby Avenue (20-23 Dec online, and in person if Tier permits)
Again, should Tier permit, The Lowry is still aiming to run Six live (19 Dec - 17 Jan), or if it's trad panto you're after, the Manchester Opera House is aiming to run Sleeping Beauty (24 Dec - 10 Dec)

Meanwhile, we, at Word of Warning, are offering a digital housewarmer for the not so festive season in the shape of Domesticated, an online home for domestic performance videos, opening its door today. Designed by Ghost and John, our first houseguests are: Beth Clayton, Freddie Watkins, Heather Bandenburg, Kellie Colbert & Deborah Newton, Mahboobeh Rajabi, Nicholas Tee, Oliver Ford, Sandra Bouguerch.

This is probably one just for the artists here, unless anyone else is fascinated by the finer details of funding schemes(!): this coming Monday (14 Dec 3pm) we are doing Project or Process... or Strictly Come Funding, a slightly playful look at which ACE fund (NLPG or DYCP) better suits which kind of work.

As the countdown to humbugfest looms, I'm going to give your inboxes a rest for a few weeks but will be back early in the New Year with news of our next live Domestic (planned for 13 Jan). As ever, keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances.

I'll be radically changing my view for the next few weeks (from laptop screen to TV screen); and while I can't invite anyone round to my actual home for xmas, please do visit our online one at Domesticated.

    See you in 2021!
