warnmcr: going spare...

So here we are in a brand new year, but it all feels strangely familiar, with sparsity in our food cupboards and the ruling classes sparing no detail of their feuds... On a brighter note, the performance world is starting to wake up and there's an imminent flurry of January activity, with not one, but three festivals in Manchester:

IRL:
The next 10 days: sees the kick off Turn On Festival at Hope Mill Theatre (14-21 Jan) - catching my eye are Ladyfriends on Mon 16 Jan and the Development Grant Evening on Fri 20 Jan.
Thick & Tight's Tits & Teeth is at The Lowry on Wed 18 Jan; while Avital Raz's Unnatural Cycles is at Oldham Library on Thu 19 Jan, and Factory International's First Breath is ongoing (until 29 Jan).

PUSH Festival at HOME enters the fray on Fri 20 Jan (until 18 Feb); shows seem to be from 26 Jan including Ink & Curtains, Monkeywood Theatre, Mothers Who Make, Alexa Vox, #BlackBoyJoyGone, Amy Townsend Lowcock, Liam Rees, Isabella Leung and Josh Coates.

Further afield, in Barnsley, the Civic has Proto-type Theater's Dead Cats on Wed 18 Jan; while in Liverpool on Sat 21 Jan, the Everyman has a Scratch Studio and Raven Radha's Gaslit is at the Unity.

The following week (w/c 23 Jan) The Lowry has Andrea Salustri and Zinnia Oberski on a double ticket deal; plus there's a screening of Fountain. At PUSH, Mothers Who Make scratch event jumped out at me. The third festival also gets going: Future Flares at Manchester School of Theatre (24-27 Jan) including Will Dickie, Tania Camara and Michael Pinchbeck + Kevin Egan.

Elsewhere Avital Raz is in Preston and Proto-type Theater are in Lancaster.

Online: PUSH has Lowri Evans's Telenovela nightly from 21 Jan;  while Thick & Tight's Tits & Teeth  is also live streamed on Wed 18 Jan.
As ever, there's also Unity Online; and there's Lowry Digital, HOMESCREEN + Sadlers Wells Digital Stage and the Word of Warning YouTube.

warnmcr: not now Noddy...

As December dawns, I (alongside a certain frozen food retailer) am pondering whether debate over the human rights debacle of the football is more or less depressing than wall to wall 'festive cheer'. It seems way too late for the former and weirdly early for the latter, but looking at what's coming up, it seems my seasonal break is just about due:

IRL:
This weekend, seems pretty quiet in parts Mancunian, but in Liverpool, tomorrow Sat 26 Nov Kezia Cannon's The idea is to keep you inside is at the Unity and there's a Scratch Studio at the Everyman. Warrington Contemporary Fringe Festival runs 25-27 Nov + 1-4 Dec; while in Leeds Compass Festival is ongoing and The Lighthouse is at the Holbeck on Sat 26 Nov.

Next week (w/c 28 Nov) feels like the final flurry before the great panto takeover: Proteus's The Bloody Chamber is at The Lowry on Tue 29 Nov, Split Britches' The Last Gap at Contact on Wed 30 and Thu 1 Nov; and The Dan Daw Show is at HOME (1-3 Dec); while Lightwaves runs on Salford Quays (1- 4 Dec). Elsewhere, on Wed 30 Nov Avital Raz's Unnatural Cycles is at Sheffield Playhouse and Van Huynh Company Re:birth is at Lancaster Arts. In Liverpool, Mary Pearson's Witnessed in Translation is at Kitty's Launderette on Thu 1 Dec (and FACT on Tue 13 Dec); and Top Joe's Christmas MASS is at the Everyman on Fri 2 Dec. There's a Dance Scratch Night at the Pyramid in Warrington on Thu 1 Dec; and CLAYground: With Echoes is at CLAY in Leeds on Fri 2 Dec.

In December, as ever, festive shows take over ... but you could keep an eye out for Rob Newman and Bourgeois + Maurice at HOME and Occupational Hazard at the Holbeck and Northern Rascals at Interplay Theatre in Leeds.

Online: Stacy Makishi's The Ritual is on Tue 29 Nov (look for Storbritannien when selecting country).
All the DaDaFest shows are available until 18 Dec. There's also Lowri Evans's TelenovelaUnity Online has just added new content; and there's Lowry Digital, HOMESCREEN, MIF Watch On Demand + Sadlers Wells Digital Stage and the Word of Warning YouTube.

The Weekly Warning is going to take a break until things liven up again but will be back in time for PUSH Festival (20 Jan-18 Feb).
In the meantime keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to opportunities and show videos online, and @WarnMcr on Twitter for short-notice performances.

warnmcr: turn and turn-about...

As we witness the biggest tax u-turn imaginable, for us basic mortals it seems pretty much to be a case of the Chancellor giveth and the Chancellor taketh away... In more positive u-turns, following a 6 year hiatus, I can announce the return of Turn, our open call dance platform coming to Contact in March 2023 - so if you are of a choreographic persuasion, you can find out more and submit your proposal here.
