Word of Warning — Weekly Warning

warnmcr: at a distance...

So, in this extraordinary, unprecedented week, and having watched the industry shut down in front of my eyes on Monday evening, a signpost to live performance seems more than a little redundant. I thought maybe I could give you my guide to what's on TV - but those of you who know me, know *nobody* wants the rubbish I watch!

Instead, I'll update you on where Word of Warning is at. Sadly we have lost both Jamal Gerald's Idol and Jo Bannon's We Are Fucked (how ironic!). At present, we are clinging onto Tania Camara's Oreo and Works Ahead in the hopes that we can find a way of realising a version of them in some way, possibly digitally. We have an update page where we will post latest information on those and anything else interesting or useful we come across. Our aspiration is to create some new events online over the coming months - but we need to figure what and how! As hÅb, we remain open to advise and support artists however we can within our limited resources.

I was intending to put this Weekly Warning on a break for a while, but the performance community is regrouping rapidly and online momentum is building. I need a bit of time to figure out how to stay abreast of it myself - as it's not just local but national and international, so beyond me to be comprehensive, but I'll try to work it out and be back soon, with a maybe more Sporadic Warning! In the meantime, we'll be tweeting anything that crops up at short notice, so follow us @warnmcr.

In the interim, things to keep an eye on: the National Review of Live Art archive NRLA30 is now online; Live Stream Archive is just getting going; Exeunt Magazine has started a resources page with some interesting events and archive video listed lower down and longer term, the BBC has announced a Culture in Quarantine Festival For comedy, there's the daily Stay At Home comedy festival, while Mark Thomas's Check Up: Our NHS @70 is downloadable in exchange for a donation to the Trussell Trust. On the international front, Perform Istanbul has a Stay Live At Home event on Instagram; and there is also The Social Distancing Festival from Canada.

Closer to home Krissi Musiol is doing a domestic intervention daily on Instagram and finally, an actual date for your diary, on Sun 29 Mar when Live Art Club London is going online.

Keep well and not too stir-crazy, and hope to see you in the virtual world.

I'm sure you haven't been waiting with baited-breath for this week's gripping edition - the lateness is not the blight of Friday the 13th, but a corona 'Delay' factor - awaiting latest updates from our presenting partners for Jamal Gerald's Idol. At present time, the message remains that all performances at Royal Exchange Theatre are going ahead as scheduled - see here for further info. It's a unique and fluid situation and I can't speak to all the venues mentioned below, so keep checking individual websites for latest news.

Before that, this weekend you can still catch Figs In Wigs's Little Wimmin and Bourgeois + Maurice's Insane Animals at HOME (until Sat 14 Mar); while Mark Thomas's 50 Things About Us is at Liverpool Playhouse on Fri 13 + Sat 14 Mar.

Next week (w/c 16 Mar) could be a feat of logistics. We at WoW + Contact are at Royal Exchange Theatre for Jamal Gerald's Idol on Thu 19-Sat 21 Mar. At The Lowry, Robert LePage's 887 is on Wed 18 + Thu 19 Mar; Alexander Whitley Dance Co's Overflow on Wed 18 Mar and Best of BE Festival on Sat 21 Mar. Imitating the Dog's Night of the Living Dead Remix is at HOME 18-21 Mar; + Emergence 2020 is at Waterside, Sale on Sat 21 Mar. If you're really keen you could do most of it - Alexander Whitley on Wednesday, LePage on Thursday, Jamal Gerald on Friday, Imitating the Dog on Saturday matinee and Best of BE festival or Emergence 2020 on Saturday night!! For something a bit different, monster/monstrum is at NIAMOS on 16, 18 + 19 Mar.

Further afield, the third Spill Yer Tea is at Constellations, Liverpool on Wed 18 Mar; while the Arts Centre at Edgehill University has Vincent Dance's In Loco Parentis on Tue 17 Mar + Vicci Riley's Herring Girls on Thu 19 Mar. On Sat 21 Mar, Lancaster Arts has People Show 137: God Knows How Many; and CLAY, Leeds has Homos + Houmous.

As Friday morning teases an illusory burst of spring, maybe we can temporarily blank-out the almost biblical storms, pestilence and plagues of locusts... While next week is a little lean on the performance front, there's a bit of stockpile coming so get preparing!

warnmcr: gap stopped...

I find myself not at my sharpest this morning after a very long, somewhat chilly but ultimately very satsifying day's work realising StopGap. As Storm Jorge looms, alongside the antediluvian tradition of women proposing to men on leap day, I'm looking forward to a sofa-weekend, consciously uncoupling from the work I find myself wedded to.

This weekend you can still see Made In China's Super Duper Close Up at The Royal Exchange Theatre (until Sat 29 Feb); and Bourgeois + Maurice's Insane Animals is at HOME (until 14 Mar). Lancaster Arts has Nikki + JD's Knot on Fri 28 + Sat 29 Feb; and the New Queers on The Block Weekender is in Blackpool (until 29 Feb) with Jackie Hagan + Mandla Rae, tonight, Fri 28 Feb.

Next week (w/c 2 Mar) Transitions Dance is at Waterside, Sale on Tue 3 Mar; Sophie Woolley's Augmented is at The Royal Exchange Theatre (5-7 Mar); Willy Hudson's Bottom is at The Lowry (5-7 Mar); and Figs In Wigs's Little Wimmin is at HOME (5-14 Mar). Manchester Jewish Museum's Festival of Belonging (7-14 Mar) includes Leo Burtin's Good Appetite at Manchester Art Gallery on Sun 8 Mar.

As we creep towards leap day it's a bit quiet on the performance homefront, but here at Word of Warning we are preparing to leap into the wintery void with our own makeshift proposal. Before that, this weekend, Kinetic's [INTIMATE] festival (til Sun 23 Feb) might appeal to the sonically curious; while over in Liverpool you can catch Imitating the Dog's Night of the Living Dead at the Everyman + Playhouse until Sat 22 Feb (coming to HOME in March) and Alexis Teplin's It's My Pleasure To Participate at The Bluecoat on Sat 22 Feb.

Next week (w/c 24 Feb), for us it's all about Emergency StopGap on Thu 27 Feb (6-10pm) - 13 pieces, mainly durational, dotted around NIAMOS's faded grandeur, with artists Bethany Mountain, Chris Owen, Kris Canavan, Krissi Musiol, Martin Hamblen, Natalie Wardle, Oliver Ford, Philip Bedwell, Powder Keg, Shkiesha, Susanna Amato, Tink Flaherty + TomYumSim.
It's pay what you decide, you can come and go as you please (full programme here) - but DO wrap up warmly!

As the winds of change blow through the cabinet office and Ciara leaves, trailing Dennis in its wake, Word of Warning bids farewell to the barnstormer that was Harry Clayton-Wright. While my own travel plans feel ill-advised, this weekend, if you fancy a bit of blustery travel, the very excellent Vincent Gambini's This Is Not A Magic Show is at the Capstone Theatre, Liverpool Hope University, tonight Fri 14 Feb. If you want to brave the Pennines, in Bradford there's the Right Queer, Right Now Weekender (Thu 13-Sun 16 Feb) including Vijay Patel, The Gloop Show + Nathaniel Hall (nb weekend wristbands only); while in York there's A Taste of SLAP on Sat 15 Feb (check first as quite a bit is sold-out).

Next week (w/c 17 Feb) in parts Mancunian all seems quite - though you might try Thick & Tight's Romancing The Apocalypse at The Lowry on Mon 17 Feb. As the american political bandwagon mimics the UK in a re-run of teflon-coated mendacity versus well-meaning inefficacity; and we all give a chorus of I am Spartacus, closer to home things (well, Word of Warning anyway) is waking up...

This weekend, Sheila Ghelani + Sue Palmer's Common Salt is at Manchester Central Library, today, Fri 7 Feb; and Nathaniel Hall's First Time is at New Adelphi Theatre, Salford University tomorrow, Sat 8 Feb. Further afield, Lancaster Arts has Fram + Dunt's Collectif and then tonight, Fri 7 Feb.

Next week (w/c 10 Feb) sees the start of the Word of Warning season with Harry Clayton-Wright's Sex Education on Wed 12 Feb at The Lowry. It is technically fully booked, but Pay What You Decide is a tricky beast so there may well be tickets on the door (if you have booked and can't use your ticket PLEASE let The Lowry know so we can reallocate it!) Also at The Lowry is Joseph Toonga's Born To Manifest on Thu 13 Feb.
Beyond Manchester things are really waking up with Rachel Mars's Your Sexts Are Shit at Lancaster Arts on Tue 11 Feb; Shane Shambu's Confessions of a Cockney Temple Dancer is at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University on Thu 13 Feb; Vincent Gambini's This Is Not A Magic Show is at the Capstone Theatre, Liverpool Hope University on Fri 14 Feb. On this last day of January, there's no more if - we are indeed going away... and while the white cliffs of Dover bid a forlorn farewell to Europe, as a nation we find ourselves slinking off to our island hideaway to await whatever unknown marvels the next year may bring... at least the performative expectations of the next few weeks are a bit more predictable:

This weekend, the last flakes of the mancunian festival flurry see White Noise Theatre's Freedom To Move tonight, Fri 31 Jan at HOME; while Barbara is at Hope Mill Theatre on Sat 1 Feb. Over in Leeds, Imitating the Dog's Night of the Living Dead is at Leeds Playhouse (til 15 Feb).

Next week (w/c 3 Feb) Mancunia seems quiet until Sat 8 Feb when Sheila Ghelani + Sue Palmer's Common Salt is at Manchester Central Library and Nathaniel Hall's First Time is at New Adelphi Theatre, Salford University. I've been asked to let you know about the Quiet Man Dave Prize has just launched by MMU in memory of the much-missed Dave Murray who wrote so generously about performance and theatre in Manchester. There's a fiction and a non-fiction prize, and the hope is to encourage more new writing about theatre and performance across the city.

I'm off to polish my 50p and hone my festival of brexit application (can you imagine?).

This gloomy morning sees us, unbelievably, in the last week of January and of being European...
The Mancunian early festival flurry is also winding down a bit but this weekend, at HOME you can still see this stage of Tania Camara's Oreo (tonight Fri 24 + tomorrow, Sat 25 Jan - then see how it develops in April); while Turn On continues at Hope Mill Theatre with Minute Taker's Wolf Hours tonight, Fri 24 Jan.

Next week (w/c 27 Jan) seems much calmer, but look out for Tamara Micner's Holocaust Brunch at Manchester Central Library on Mon 27 Jan. The following week (w/c 3 Feb) Mancunia goes very quiet indeed - so far all that has leapt out at me is Sheila Ghelani at Manchester Central Library and Nathaniel Hall at New Adelphi. Further afield Joseph Toonga and Joanne Tremarco are in Ormskirk, while Fram + Dunt are in Lancaster.

My work flurry isn't calming down however, so I'm off to try and put together a programme for the coming Emergency StopGap.

As the royals push off abroad and the triumphalists fundraise* to turn on Big Ben, in parts theatrical the seasonal soft start has all gone a bit hard core, as another festival has snuck into the fray...

This weekend, PUSH Festival at HOME (18 Jan-1 Feb) kicks off on Sat 18 Jan with Platform Manchester's Hope and Fear; while the Turn On Fest (til 1 Feb, with Superbia + Mother's Ruin) is up and running at Hope Mill Theatre: Nataly LeBouleux's MINA is tonight, Fri 17 Jan; and Trans Creative's Stand By Your Trans is on Sun 19 Jan. In Leeds, the rescheduled That Matt Rogers Project (in)CREDIBLE is at CLAY, tonight, Fri 17 Jan.

Next week (w/c 20 Jan) really is festival central: PUSH continues at HOME with Plaster Cast Theatre's Sound Cistem (20-22 Jan) and Tania Camara's Oreo (23-25 Jan). Turn On continues at Hope Mill Theatre with Mandla Rae's As British As A Watermelon on Mon 20 Jan; Jason Andrew Guest's Mind Games on Tue 21 Jan; An Audience with David Hoyle on Wed 22 Jan; Nobody's Watching on Thu 23 Jan; and Minute Taker's Wolf Hours on Fri 24 Jan. Interruptions at MMU's Holden Gallery has John-Paul Jones's Technotrash on Tue 21 Jan and ARM's Oozy on Thu 23 Jan; while The Lowry has Debs Gatenby's Hiya Anxiety in a doublebill with Salford University on Wed 22 Jan. Further afield, The Dark Room is in Ormskirk on Wed 22 Jan.

The following week (w/c 27 Jan) so far seems calmer, with Holocaust Brunch at Manchester Central Library; An Act of Care + White Noise Theatre at HOME; and Barbara at Hope Mill Theatre. Elsewhere, Emergence 2020 is at Stage@Leeds.
