Word of Warning — Weekly Warning

Word of Warning...

Having said I wouldn't send a WoW this week... a bit of digging around has uncovered that Leeds seems to be turning into festival city - just not shouting loudly about it this side of the border!!

But first, closer to home, a quick reminder that today, Fri 15 is Greg McLaren's Doris Day Can F__K Off is at the Lowry Studio and Mother's Ruin is at Contact that same evening... it's probably just possible to squeeze the both in as long as you plan on making a suitably dramatic entrance into Mother's Ruin!
Next week, for the dance inclined, EDge 2012, the showcase of London Contemporary Dance School graduates lands at Contact on Thurs 21. 

And, as touted, Leeds springs into life with two weeks of festivals.  First up is the Emerge 2012 festival (18-24 June) then the Ludus Festival the following week.  From Emerge, what intrigued me were the two Works in Progress on Weds 20 and Thurs 21 June, and Daniel Bye's Six O'clock News at Carriageworks on Sat 23.

Think that's it for now - though if anyone wants to tell me differently, please do so! Suggestions are always welcome!

Also, I'm beginning to think ahead to the big summer slowdown and whether to go to Edinburgh! So... was wondering if anyone reading this might have already started thinking about festival and whether they might be up for sharing their tips?!  Any thoughts and ideas please post here!

UK National Laughter Championships (17-24 June) 

Just wondering if anyone had any tips or thoughts - or even blatant plugs - for the forthcoming Edinburgh jamboree... if so, and they'd like to share them, please comment below.

 

Word of Warning...

Back at Z-arts now and writing as the Flare Weekender (tonight Fri 8 and tomorrow Sat 9 June) gathers pace all around me.  Tonight sees Katheringa Radeva and Sleepwalk Collective amongst others, tomorrow includes Club Reckless, Jodean Sumner and many more plus workshops, cabaret and a party.

Also on Saturday at the Bluecoat, Liverpool is Mary Pearson's Failure.

Next week anyone fancying a trip to Yorkshire can catch Dark Horse's Harvest on Weds 13 and Thurs 14 at The LBT, Huddersfield and Oui Performance's Action Art now featuring Alastair MacLennan at York St John's University on Sat 15.

The following week is looking a little on the quiet side, so, unless I come across something more to talk about in the interim, I might give WoW a break - so a little note that anyone fancying excercising their laughter muscles can do so at artist Robin Graham's  UK National Laughter Championships (17-24 June)

Just to let you know that this info filtered into my conscious just too late for the last mailer - Francesca Millican-Slater's Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs at the Lowry Studio tonight Thurs 7 June.

And, of course, not to forget that the Flare Weekender  kicks off tomorrow Fri 8 and continues Sat 9 June at Z-Arts - with ten pieces including Sleepwalk Collective, A Smith, Katherina Radeva and lots more plus cabaret, live music and a party.  

 

 

 

 

 

Word of Warning - still working ahead...

This week's mail comes to you from the depths of Contact as we gear up for the second day of Works Ahead. It was great to see so many here for last night's shows - please join us again from 4pm today, Fri 1 June for a backstage exploration, with four installations and interactions by: Julieann O'Malley, Angel Club (north), Small Acts and Fallen Wall Arts - more info here. 

A very rushed mailer - as we're in full production mode, so please forgive omissions and erros.- but a reminder of the Trace Theatre and the University of Salford doublebill including Nicki Hobday Conquers Space at the Lowry Studio tonight and The Allery ~ A Large Scale ~ Pop-Up Gallery from Fri 1- Tues 5 June.

Following immediately on (and we mean immediately) from Works Ahead is Re: Con's 24 Arty People - taking over the whole of Contact for 24 hours - culminating in performances on Sat 2 June. 

Next week brings the final SEVEN SITES project from 6-9 June - this time share a meal with Quarantine..!  And, at Contact, Belarus Free Theatre - Minsk 2011 on Weds 6 and Thurs 7 June

And of course next weekend sees the full-on onslaught of the Flare Weekender Fri 8 and Sat 9 June at Z-Arts - with ten pieces including Sleepwalk Collective, A Smith, Katherina Radeva and lots more plus cabaret, live music and a party.  Produce in conjunction with our humble selves - we hope to see you back at Z-Arts for the final indoor blow-out of the season!

Word of Warning - works ahead...

I think I was tempting fate calling a project Works Ahead... the work level is pretty intense: we've been stuck in a darkened room while everyone else is enjoying the sunshine..!

Nevertheless next Thurs 31 May and Fri 1 June see the climax of the project at Contact.  On Thursday, three performances in development by Lowri Evans, Gareth Cutter and Krissi Musiol and, on Friday, explore backstage at Contact with four installations and interactions by: Julieann O'Malley, Angel Club (north), Small Acts and Fallen Wall Arts.

Word of Warning

And so the Word of Warning Tonka-toy-juggernaut hurtles onwards... following Getting It Out There we are now in production for Works Ahead,  seven new works in development coming up at Contact at the end of the month...

Before we crash headlong into that, tonight, Friday 18 May,  is Word of Warning's last standalone Sampler Series of the season at Z-arts (formerly Zion Arts Centre) featuring Olwen Davies, Levantes Dance Theatre and Ellie Harrison.  Levantes are well known to many of you, and you may remember Ellie Harrison from her greenroom Instant Winning Dressing The Part with Ollie Smith, and various emergency events.  Olwen is a newcome to these parts and you can catch her taster videos here.

Since the Word of Warning google calendar is strangely empty next week - the only thing I've come across is on Friday 25th, Taciturn and Tmesis in a Physicalfest doublebill at the Unity, Liverpool  - please do take advantage of the plethora of work still remaining this week.  Of course we really hope to see lots of you at the mega-Sampler Series evening tonight, but you can also check out the ongoing FutureEverything programme, Saturday's Larkin' About followed by Amy Lamé's Unhappy Birthday at Contact - or  DV8's Can We Talk About This at the Lowry.

And a final plug - the call for Hazard proposals is still open... and it's the final week of our crowdfunding campaign  - the lucky top donors get the chance to select a project to happen on the streets of Manchester!

Following our frantic three days of dance with Turn last weekend, we're now about to hot-foot it up to Lancaster for Franko B's Because of Love today (Friday 11 May 7pm) and the Getting It Out There symposium (nb being streamed here tomorrow, Sat 12 May).

Next week presents a bewildering array in Manchester. Obviously my somewhat partisan pick of the week is Word of Warning's last standalone Sampler Series of the season at Z-arts (formerly Zion Arts Centre) on Friday 18 May.

But with FutureEverything kicking off and in the interests of fair play, I thought I'd do you a little week planner to take in the maximum possible, so:

On Thurs 17 May Blast Theory's I'd Hide You online game (as part of FutureEverything - also on 18th+19th) and/or for a little live queer entertainment Club Wotever: Bethany Black, Joey Hateley, Rosie Lugosi, Saltylips, Ajah UK and Hooker  

Of course, on Friday 18th May, Sampler Series with Olwen Davies, Ellie Harrison and a touch of Canapé Art from Levantes Dance Theatre in the café bar. (Though if you really must, DV8 and Amy Lamé are also on that night too!)

And on Saturday 19th May - either Larkin' About followed by Amy Lamé's Unhappy Birthday at Contact - or  DV8's Can We Talk About This at the Lowry.

Word of Warning

Kicking off with a reminder that Turn 2012 is well underway at Contact - tonight Fri 4 and tomorrow Sat 5 May - there are still 12 short pieces to catch plus a Mixed Movement finale.  Schedules are at turnmcr.

Next week there's loads on all over the place:  Gecko's Missing is at Contact, Weds 9 - Sat 12 May; and Lucy Foster's The Pirate Project is at the Royal Exchange Studio, Thurs 10 - Sat 12 May.

The Carriageworks, Leeds also plays host to The Pirate Project on Tues 8 May and to the intriguing Foundry Group's Big Daddy vs. Giant Haystacks on Thurs 10 May.

Live at LICA, meanwhile, continues with The Quiet Volume, Curate the Campus, plus Franko B's Because of Love on Friday 11 May (nb 7pm) before launching into the Getting It Out There symposium (nb registration closes on Weds 9 May).

For those nostalgic for a bit of VaudeVille/greenroom action, Tam Hinton's The Package is also getting a re-boot at the Wordsmith Festival in Oldham on Fri 11 May.

Final word is a quick reminder that Word of Warning's own Sampler Series returns on Friday 18 May with a full line-up featuring Olwen Davies, Ellie Harrison and a touch of Canapé Art from Levantes Dance Theatre in the café bar!

As ever, thanks to Tom Marshman, GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN and Chris Fitzsimmons for another enjoyable Sampler Series evening last week - hope the bingo winners enjoyed their prizes!

Final reminder that West Yorkshire Playhouse's Transform 12 festival is reaching its final weekend, I'd be there if we weren't deep in rehearsals for Works Ahead.

Curiously, things seem quite quiet next week, which gives me the chance to do an unashamed plug for our own Turn 2012 at Contact, Thurs 3 - Sat 5 May. Seventeen pieces and three very different evenings of dance - and you can see all three days for £20/12 concessions! The line-up is online now and we'll be releasing full schedules early next week.

Elsewhere, you can catch Caustic Widows' Paperwork, at the Unity (3-5 May), or for the poetically inclined, a second chance to see Dominic Berry's Wizard in Nelson, Lancs on Thurs 3 May.  If you happen to be around Lancaster, Live at LICA's The Quiet Volume (Curate the Campus 2012) kicks off on 1 May and runs to 12 May.

I'm off now to gear up for a couple of hectic weeks - first loads of dance and then the industry-focused Getting It Out There symposium at Live at LICA the following week! If the cliché's true, I must be very wicked indeed!
