Word of Warning — Weekly Warning

After last night's smokey, hazy outlook, this morning is crystal clear and beautiful. I've just ventured out for the first time in days, as for the last few weeks, my world has consisted almost entirely of Grantium (for the uninitiated: ACE's funding portal - not a place anyone would choose to live) so I have been very remiss at searching for online performance. What I've also realised is that things are cropping up at such short notice that email is a poor medium - so please do follow @warnmcr on Twitter for rapid info.

Anyway, over the next couple of weeks, there's a flurry of activity right under our noses - so here goes:
Coming to a screen in your living room, tonight, Fri 24 Apr, Contact presents Young Identity's One Mic Stand - online at 7.30pm.

Next Friday 1 May, with some trepidation, Word of Warning and STUN are making our first foray into streaming world - with Tania Camara's Oreo: variations at 7pm (rescheduled from this week). Rather than re-presenting a whole show intended for a live audience, it's a short, live choreographic exploration made for streaming.

Also next weekend (but happily without actual clash), there's GIFT Festival (1-3 May) including Tania El Khoury (one to ones throughout). On Friday they also have Artesbandes with Bertrand Lesca + Nasi Voutsas; and on Saturday: Greg Wohead, Sophie Woolley, Gudrun Soley Sigurdardottir and Action Hero. On Sunday there's Luca Rutherford + Greg Wohead, Jonathan Burrows + Matteo Fargion, with Wendy Houstoun and a chance to catch an Instagram version of Jamal Gerald's Idol (which we sadly lost as a live show).

Coming up, MIF Live is showing small Festival In My House commissions on Wednesdays; while Richard DeDomenici's Coronavision Song Contest is on Sat 16 May. Keep an eye on Theatre in the Mill's Live Portal; and also live (but I have no idea of style nor content) is Online Fringe Festival and The Social Distancing Festival from Canada.

Meanwhile there's an increasing body of show videos being made available online. The Wooster Group, imitating the dog and Company Chameleon are releasing a different show weekly, while there's a growing repository at Live Stream Archive; plus NRLA30. Keep checking our News + Information page for more pointers to show videos online.

warnmcr: we've got each other...

From my total solitude at the start of this second week of 'lockdown', I'm musing on the irony of this subject line. Time has become a bit of a relative concept and while the generic message seems to be that people have way too much of it, I seem to have less and less and am constantly running to catch up! So I thought I'd break with Weekly Warning tradition to hastily extemporise and flag a few imminent things that have popped up on my radar.

Tomorrow, Wed 1 April at 7.45pm Paul O'Donnell's We've Got Each Other is coming live from his parents' living room. It's a lovely piece in a theatre and I'm really intrigued to see how it converts (if you're bored his The Pauls videos are fun too - 4 yrs ago in his videos).
Next week, Proud & Loud Arts are presenting Janet Charlesworth's Article 19 UNCRPD as a series of daily time-limited YouTube screenings on
Mon 6 Apr @ 12noon, Tue 7 Apr @ 7pm, Wed 8 Apr @ 1pm, Thu 9 Apr @ 3pm, Fri 10 Apr @ 8pm.
Meanwhile Company Chamelon are also doing daily #IsolationImprov; while at Fuel, Hofesh Schechter's Everyday Moments podcast runs until 1 Jul.

For an intriguing international perspective - Barcelona based Konic Thtr are doing their weekly 'performative meeting' on Thu 2 Apr 2.30-5pm which could be an interesting insight into the Spanish + Catalan situation; while the Dutch STRP Festival 2020 is happening online (2-5 April).

I've realised the enormity of trying to get to grips with what's going on online - it's not the 80+ websites in the North that I regularly trawl - it's an unlimited number worldwide - so I'm really just going to have to pass on interesting things as/whenI come across them! They also tend to crop up at very short notice - so @warnmcr on Twitter will be how we communicate those. Thanks in the meantime to Cat Shaw for researching much of what we've got to date.

warnmcr: at a distance...

So, in this extraordinary, unprecedented week, and having watched the industry shut down in front of my eyes on Monday evening, a signpost to live performance seems more than a little redundant. I thought maybe I could give you my guide to what's on TV - but those of you who know me, know *nobody* wants the rubbish I watch!

Instead, I'll update you on where Word of Warning is at. Sadly we have lost both Jamal Gerald's Idol and Jo Bannon's We Are Fucked (how ironic!). At present, we are clinging onto Tania Camara's Oreo and Works Ahead in the hopes that we can find a way of realising a version of them in some way, possibly digitally. We have an update page where we will post latest information on those and anything else interesting or useful we come across. Our aspiration is to create some new events online over the coming months - but we need to figure what and how! As hÅb, we remain open to advise and support artists however we can within our limited resources.

I was intending to put this Weekly Warning on a break for a while, but the performance community is regrouping rapidly and online momentum is building. I need a bit of time to figure out how to stay abreast of it myself - as it's not just local but national and international, so beyond me to be comprehensive, but I'll try to work it out and be back soon, with a maybe more Sporadic Warning! In the meantime, we'll be tweeting anything that crops up at short notice, so follow us @warnmcr.

In the interim, things to keep an eye on: the National Review of Live Art archive NRLA30 is now online; Live Stream Archive is just getting going; Exeunt Magazine has started a resources page with some interesting events and archive video listed lower down and longer term, the BBC has announced a Culture in Quarantine Festival For comedy, there's the daily Stay At Home comedy festival, while Mark Thomas's Check Up: Our NHS @70 is downloadable in exchange for a donation to the Trussell Trust. On the international front, Perform Istanbul has a Stay Live At Home event on Instagram; and there is also The Social Distancing Festival from Canada.

Closer to home Krissi Musiol is doing a domestic intervention daily on Instagram and finally, an actual date for your diary, on Sun 29 Mar when Live Art Club London is going online.

Keep well and not too stir-crazy, and hope to see you in the virtual world.

I'm sure you haven't been waiting with baited-breath for this week's gripping edition - the lateness is not the blight of Friday the 13th, but a corona 'Delay' factor - awaiting latest updates from our presenting partners for Jamal Gerald's Idol. At present time, the message remains that all performances at Royal Exchange Theatre are going ahead as scheduled - see here for further info. It's a unique and fluid situation and I can't speak to all the venues mentioned below, so keep checking individual websites for latest news.

Before that, this weekend you can still catch Figs In Wigs's Little Wimmin and Bourgeois + Maurice's Insane Animals at HOME (until Sat 14 Mar); while Mark Thomas's 50 Things About Us is at Liverpool Playhouse on Fri 13 + Sat 14 Mar.

I find myself not at my sharpest this morning after a very long, somewhat chilly but ultimately very satsifying day's work realising StopGap. As Storm Jorge looms, alongside the antediluvian tradition of women proposing to men on leap day, I'm looking forward to a sofa-weekend, consciously uncoupling from the work I find myself wedded to.

As we creep towards leap day it's a bit quiet on the performance homefront, but here at Word of Warning we are preparing to leap into the wintery void with our own makeshift proposal. Before that, this weekend, Kinetic's [INTIMATE] festival (til Sun 23 Feb) might appeal to the sonically curious; while over in Liverpool you can catch Imitating the Dog's Night of the Living Dead at the Everyman + Playhouse until Sat 22 Feb (coming to HOME in March) and Alexis Teplin's It's My Pleasure To Participate at The Bluecoat on Sat 22 Feb.

Next week (w/c 24 Feb), for us it's all about Emergency StopGap on Thu 27 Feb (6-10pm) - 13 pieces, mainly durational, dotted around NIAMOS's faded grandeur, with artists Bethany Mountain, Chris Owen, Kris Canavan, Krissi Musiol, Martin Hamblen, Natalie Wardle, Oliver Ford, Philip Bedwell, Powder Keg, Shkiesha, Susanna Amato, Tink Flaherty + TomYumSim.
It's pay what you decide, you can come and go as you please (full programme here) - but DO wrap up warmly!

As the winds of change blow through the cabinet office and Ciara leaves, trailing Dennis in its wake, Word of Warning bids farewell to the barnstormer that was Harry Clayton-Wright. While my own travel plans feel ill-advised, this weekend, if you fancy a bit of blustery travel, the very excellent Vincent Gambini's This Is Not A Magic Show is at the Capstone Theatre, Liverpool Hope University, tonight Fri 14 Feb. If you want to brave the Pennines, in Bradford there's the Right Queer, Right Now Weekender (Thu 13-Sun 16 Feb) including Vijay Patel, The Gloop Show + Nathaniel Hall (nb weekend wristbands only); while in York there's A Taste of SLAP on Sat 15 Feb (check first as quite a bit is sold-out).

Next week (w/c 17 Feb) in parts Mancunian all seems quite - though you might try Thick & Tight's Romancing The Apocalypse at The Lowry on Mon 17 Feb. As the american political bandwagon mimics the UK in a re-run of teflon-coated mendacity versus well-meaning inefficacity; and we all give a chorus of I am Spartacus, closer to home things (well, Word of Warning anyway) is waking up...

This weekend, Sheila Ghelani + Sue Palmer's Common Salt is at Manchester Central Library, today, Fri 7 Feb; and Nathaniel Hall's First Time is at New Adelphi Theatre, Salford University tomorrow, Sat 8 Feb. Further afield, Lancaster Arts has Fram + Dunt's Collectif and then tonight, Fri 7 Feb.

Next week (w/c 10 Feb) sees the start of the Word of Warning season with Harry Clayton-Wright's Sex Education on Wed 12 Feb at The Lowry. It is technically fully booked, but Pay What You Decide is a tricky beast so there may well be tickets on the door (if you have booked and can't use your ticket PLEASE let The Lowry know so we can reallocate it!) Also at The Lowry is Joseph Toonga's Born To Manifest on Thu 13 Feb.
Beyond Manchester things are really waking up with Rachel Mars's Your Sexts Are Shit at Lancaster Arts on Tue 11 Feb; Shane Shambu's Confessions of a Cockney Temple Dancer is at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University on Thu 13 Feb; Vincent Gambini's This Is Not A Magic Show is at the Capstone Theatre, Liverpool Hope University on Fri 14 Feb. In Bradford there's the Right Queer, Right Now Weekender (Thu 13-Sun 16 Feb) including Vijay Patel, The Gloop Show + Nathaniel Hall (nb weekend wristbands only); while in York there's A Taste of SLAP on Sat 15 Feb.

The following week (w/c 17 Feb) seems a touch quiet again - with Thick & Tight at The Lowry and Nathaniel Hall in Lancaster.

On this last day of January, there's no more if - we are indeed going away... and while the white cliffs of Dover bid a forlorn farewell to Europe, as a nation we find ourselves slinking off to our island hideaway to await whatever unknown marvels the next year may bring... at least the performative expectations of the next few weeks are a bit more predictable:

This weekend, the last flakes of the mancunian festival flurry see White Noise Theatre's Freedom To Move tonight, Fri 31 Jan at HOME; while Barbara is at Hope Mill Theatre on Sat 1 Feb. Over in Leeds, Imitating the Dog's Night of the Living Dead is at Leeds Playhouse (til 15 Feb).

Next week (w/c 3 Feb) Mancunia seems quiet until Sat 8 Feb when Sheila Ghelani + Sue Palmer's Common Salt is at Manchester Central Library and Nathaniel Hall's First Time is at New Adelphi Theatre, Salford University. Further afield there's a bit more - the Arts Centre at Edgehill University has Joseph Toonga's Born to Manifest on Tue 4 Feb (also at The Lowry on Thu 13 Feb) and Joanne Tremarco's The Birth of Death on Thu 6 Feb; while Lancaster Arts has Fram + Dunt's Collectif and then on Fri 7 Feb.

The following week (w/c 10 Feb) sees the start of the season for Word of Warning with Harry Clayton-Wright at The Lowry (booking very fast). Beyond Manchester things are really waking up with Rachel Mars in Lancaster; Shane Shambu in Ormskirk; Vincent Gambini in Liverpool. In Bradford there's the Right Queer, Right Now Weekender, while in York there's A Taste of SLAP.

I've been asked to let you know about the Quiet Man Dave Prize has just launched by MMU in memory of the much-missed Dave Murray who wrote so generously about performance and theatre in Manchester. There's a fiction and a non-fiction prize, and the hope is to encourage more new writing about theatre and performance across the city.

I'm off to polish my 50p and hone my festival of brexit application (can you imagine?).
