warnmcr: starting afresh...

So it's September, the leaves are falling, the freshers are falling down drunk and, in what seems like a curiously late-starting season, there's a glimmer of mancunian theatrical activity on the October horizon.

This weekend, there's a momentary flurry here in Mancunia - tonight Fri 21 Sept, there's Hush Hush at The Lowry and tomorrow, Sat 22 Sep,  House of Ghetto + Gemma Parker's The Hidden Pin-Up is at the Whitworth.
Over in Liverpool at the Biennial, there's Rosa Johan Uddoh + Tom Smith at the Bluecoat (Fri 21 Sep) and Invisible Flock's Aurora at Toxteth Reservoir (21 Sep - 7 Oct); while in Bradford Common Wealth's Radical Acts. is at the Bradford Club (til 23 Sep). Also tomorrow, Sat 22 Sep Derelict has a series of sited pieces at Lancashire Encounter in Preston.

Next week (w/c 24 Sep) is a bit quiet, but there's the Vital Signs Festival, including Mary Pearson's FoMO, mofos! at the University of Salford (28-30 Sep). Humanhood's Zero is at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University on Tue 25 Sep; and Tmesis Theatre's Beyond Belief is at the Unity, Liverpool (28 Sep - 6 Oct).

The following week (w/c 1 Oct) while parts Mancunian are slow off the mark, elsewhere, there's Furnace Festival (1-6 Oct) including Selina Thompson's Salt on Tue 2 + Wed 3 Oct, at the newly renamed Leeds Playhouse. Also on Tue 2 Oct, Andy Smith's Summit is at Axis Arts Centre, Crewe; and Michael Clark Company's to a simple rock'n'roll song is at Storyhouse Chester.  On Thu 4 Oct Jackie Hagan's This is not a safe space is at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford ; while, closer to home Ellie Dubois's No Show is at The Lowry on Fri 5 Oct (also at Leeds Carriageworkson Mon 8 Oct)

Sat 6 Oct, sees Word of Warning herald the new season with the annual frenzy that is Emergency, this year with an even more unfeasible 30 performances in the one day.  Not content with that, on Wed 10 Oct at The Lowry, we've got another two shows hard on its heels: a one-off, Brexit-inspired pairing of Instant Dissidence's One Last Dance accompanied by Leentje Van de Cruys's Belgian Waffling.

The following week things get seriously hectic - so use Emergency to get in training for the season ahead! I, meanwhile, am off to prepare for technical meetings and contemplate why I thought 32 shows in a week was in any way a good idea!

ps. Also look out for Becoming Storybook's performances at Chapter 1 books dotted through October and November.

warnmcr: throwing shade...after the gremlins

Maybe not so much shade as impish shadows with Word of Warning's latest hazardous outing...  If you happen to be around the St Ann's Square to Exchange Square area of Manchester next Saturday (4 Aug, 12-4) you might just see your shadow misbehaving as Chrissy Jones's Shadow Girl takes to to the city streets...

August, of course, marks the usual mass 'treacle migration north, but if you're staying in parts Mancunian you might want to check out Ockham's Razor's Switch + Tipping Point (15-19 Aug).

And so to the elephant in the festival tent.. Edinburgh (3-27 Aug). The International Festival(with the likes of Phillippe Saire, Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan et al) aside, for me, the week commencing 13 Aug and the two Forest Fringe 'pass the torch' events remain the focal point. Live Art Bistro's All These Things takes over ZOO venues on Wed 15 Aug with an all nighter including Ben Mills, Katy Baird, Sh!tTheatre and Toni Lewis amongst many others (full schedule tba 3 Aug). DICE Festival is also on at Summerhall (16-18 Aug) including Sh!t Theatre and Hannah Maxwell as Dice Masters, plus Louise Orwin, Malik Nashad Sharpe, Josh Coates and Neurosis Cabaret (keep checking their facebook page for programme updates).

As ever, Summerhall remains the general nexus of all things - including the regular sprinkling of Belgians, Finns and Canadians that always intrigue. Chris Thorpe's StatusTwo Destination Language,  Katy DyeLaJohnJosephPeople ShowFlight and Zanetti Productions piqued my interest, plus there's another chance to catch work from familar friends like Making Room and Tin Can People.

Elsewhere Vincent Gambini is at Underbelly Bristo Square; Paul O'Donnell is at Pleasance Dome; Victoria Firth is at Pleasance Courtyard  and The Lincoln Company + Michael Pinchbeck are at Zoo Southside.

Trawling the listings, actually a lot of what caught my attention was that there seemed to be quite a lot of (what could be interesting but I'm not au fait enought to know) dance work at DanceBaseand at Zoo Southside.

If you want to dig a bit deeper, once again I've uploaded WoW's long list (sorted by artist name) below.  Please be aware that this is very much my pick, largely from paper - so don't hold it against me! Please forgive things I've missed and note I don't focus on internationals as they're beyond WoW's programming paygrade! Final tips - please check dates carefully as you don't want to fall prey to random days off - and my main tip is to log-in to EdFringe, and use the favourites facility (you can then export them as a handy spreadsheet and sort it as you please - it's the only thing that keeps me halfway sane!)  All that said I've not fully planned my strategy – it could well be an exhausting there and back for Live Art Bistro's overnight odyssey!

The Weekly Warning will be on a longer (I hope) break now until the world wakes up again - on current evidence probably mid-September. Don't forget that the call for proposals for Emergency is open til 15 Aug.

Meanwhile I'm going back to risk assessing shadows... have a good summer and please look out for Shadow Girl!

HAZARD 2018: SHADOW GIRL – THE CITY STREETS

warnmcr: Friday the 13th, Part II...

So, another Friday the 13th has dawned, the temperature's dropped, the heavens have finally opened, Trumpton is on my mind and, as we at Word of Warning gear up for some Hazardous behaviour, I find myself fascinated by a certain over-inflated orange blimp...

Meanwhile, so much for taking a break, no sooner had I hit send on the last Weekly Warning, than I discovered the dates for the Royal Exchange's CO:LAB Festival!

Before that, just a reminder that this weekend you can catch Greg Wohead's Celebration Florida at
Warrington Arts Festival tonight, Fri 13 Jul; and Liverpool Biennial's performance events on Sat 14 + Sun 15 Jul - including Kevin Beasley Performance + Suki Seokyeong Kang: Land Sand Strand – Activation at Tate; Taus Makhacheva Sculptural Signature Facial at Blackburne House; and Iacopo Seri - What Is (A drunken meditation on the mystery of existence) at The Playhouse.
Much, much further afield, in Croydon, Tempting Failure is also ongoing to 22 Jul.

Next week, Friday 20th is all go: if you fancy a bit of discussion there's a free symposium at the University of Manchester - Kidnap@20: The Art of Incarceration, exploring Blast Theory's groundbreaking 1998 project (no self-promotion here!). Then there's the aforementioned CO:LAB Festival 2018 (Fri 20-Sun 22 July) at the Royal Exchange Theatre - catching the eye are Ali Wilson + James Monaghan's Over My Dead BodyAmy Lawrence's TuchLydia Cottrell + Michael-Jon Mizra's Altar/Alter;and Ali Matthews + Leo Burtin's The Witching Way
Plus Waterside Sale has Refract18 Festival including Hawk Dance's Getting From A to BChad Taylor's Awakening and Mother's Ruin all on Fri 20 Jul; plus Ellie Dubois's Stuntman on Tue 24 Jul.

I've been trawling the Edinburgh listings and to be frank am not over-enthused. For me, the week to go remains w/c 13 Aug - with the Live Art Bistro ZOO takeover on Wed 15 Aug; and DICE Festival 16-18 Aug at Summerhall - details of which I'll be back with on Fri 27 Jul, alongside my (rather slimmer than usual) long-list.

In the interim - if you've been to a Word of Warning event lately and fancy helping us to know you better, the latest audience survey with Live Art UK is now live!

I'm back off to my darkened crypt to prepare for the impending return of the heatwave...

HAZARD 2018 — SHADOW GIRL

warnmcr: the hazards of summer...

So here we are on the cusp of July... When we asked for some heat, I'm sure no one meant a literal inferno - and for once we find ourselves wishing for a good old mancunian downpour. If you can face the indoors, there are a few things still happening (and some of the venues might even have aircon!)

This weekend and next week (w/c 2 Jul) there's a flurry of more theatrical activity, from new writing to puppetry - including Gael Le Cornec's The Other at STUN Studio at Z-arts, tonight Fri 29 Jun; and the Incoming Festival (29 Jun - 8 Jul) at HOME.  Of the latter, I don't pretend to know much, but the things that caught my eye were YESYESNONOOutrage and Boy. Also worth checking out could be Byron Vincent's Live Before You Die at The Lowry on Fri 6 Jul.

If you fancy a sortie further afield, in Leeds Adam Young is doing a work in progress at Live Art Bistro on Sun 1 Jul; while yet further, on Tyneside, there's Curious Festival (1-8 July) - catching my eye are Zoe Murtagh's Iconography + Peter Groom's Dietrich: Natural Duty both at Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle on Wed 4 + Thu 5 Jul; and the redoubtable Liz Agiss's Slap and Tickle at the Baltic, Gateshead on Sun 8 Jul.

The following week (w/c 9 Jul) is pretty quiet on the home front, though Warrington Arts Festival does have Greg Wohead's Celebration Florida on Fri 13 Jul.  It is however the opening weekend of Liverpool Biennial and there are a few performance events on Sat 14 + Sun 15 Jul - including Kevin Beasley Performance + Suki Seokyeong Kang: Land Sand Strand – Activationat Tate; Taus Makhacheva Sculptural Signature Facial at Blackburne House; and Iacopo Seri - What Is (A drunken meditation on the mystery of existence) at The Playhouse.

Thereafter, the summer slump appears to be upon us in these parts, though hard core live art watchers might want to foray to wildest Croydon for Tempting Failure (9-22 Jul).  Closer to home, mid-month look out for Mother's Ruin and Ellie Dubois at Refract18 at Waterside, Sale.

Word of Warning is also sneaking out a mini-outbreak of Hazardous behaviour on Sat 4 Aug, with Christina Jones's Shadow Girl - details are still emerging, so keep your eyes peeled!

Unless something unmissable crops up, this Weekly Warning is going to take a break for a few weeks - but will be back late July with a Hazard update; and an Edinburgh preview (heads-up - w/c 14 Aug might be a good time to be in Edinburgh as Live Art Bistro is doing a one day takeover on Tue 15 Aug).

In the interim - if you've been to a Word of Warning event lately and fancy helping us to know you better, the latest audience survey with Live Art UK is now live!

Have a good July.

HAZARD 2018 — SHADOW GIRL

warnmcr: feeling hectored...

While the country might be feeling a little hectored, in parts performative we're heading into the calm after this week's storm. Certain colleagues insist that the pursuit of a spherical object in Russia offers all the drama needed, but I'll be flipping a Robbie-style bird at that and going to ground.

This weekend tonight, Fri 15 and tomorrow, Sat 16 Jun you can still catch Breach's The Drill at HOME; and Barrel Organ's Anyone's Guess How We Got Here at the Royal Exchange Theatre (also at The HUB, Leeds on Sun 17 Jun).  Elsewhere, tomorrow Sat 16 Jun there's also Eggs Collective's Make Noise In The Library at Parr Library, St Helen's and Living Record Production's Thrown at Bradford Theatre in the Mill.

The remainder of June is pretty quiet.  You could check out House of Ghetto at Tribeca on Sat 23 Jun; or, further afield, in Bradford Stand and Be Counted's Where We Began is also on Sat 23 Jun, and CLASS:The Elephant in the Room is at Theatre in the Mill on Tue 26 Jun; and in Leeds Adam Young is doing a work in progress at Live Art Bistro on Sun 1 Jul. Things haven't quite ground to a halt, however, as June's penultimate day sees the start of a big burst of new writing activity at HOME in the shape of Incoming Festival (29 Jun - 8 Jul).

Given how quiet things are, I might give your inboxes a break for a week - so unless something unmissable pops up, I'll be back on Fri 29 Jun.

Best

warnmcr: history in the making...

As the city lurches into vast outdoor music festivities, in parts theatrical it's a bit feast or famine... Tonight, Fri 8 Jun you can catch Rachel Mars's Joke Translation Service at the Royal Exchange and Drift at Great Northern Warehouse; or North & South's Theatre with Legs at Bradford Theatre in the Mill; and tomorrow, Sat 9 Jun Motionhouse's Charge is at Media City.

Next week (w/c 11 Jun) is one of total gluttony. Word of Warning is back in action with Deborah Pearson's History History History at The Lowry on Wed 13 Jun (Pay What You Decide) - I don't often do this but it's genuinely one of the best shows I've seen in years, so please don't miss it!  Elsewhere, HOME is also stuffed full with David Hoyle's Diamond (11-13 Jun); Chris Thorpe + Mala Voadora's Your Best Guess (Mon 11 + Tue 12 Jun) and Breach's The Drill  (14-16 Jun); while the Royal Exchange Theatre has Barrel Organ's Anyone's Guess How We Got Here(14-16 Jun) - also at The HUB, Leeds on Sun 17 Jun.  Further afield on Sat 17 Jun there's also Eggs Collective's Make Noise In The Library at Parr Library, St Helen's and Living Record Production's Thrown at Bradford Theatre in the Mill.

The following week (w/c 18 Jun) the cupboard's looking pretty bare - but you could check out House of Ghetto at Tribeca; or in Bradford, Where We Began.

Fill your boots and join us at The Lowry on Wednesday for a bit of History.

    warnmcr: half-term, half-life or half-baked...

Here we are in the hinterland between Spring and Summer - it's the first of June and things are already looking a touch quiet out there.  Tonight, Fri 1 Jun you can catch the Performing Gender event at Yorkshire Dance, Leeds - or - at the risk of shooting myself in the foot: Deborah Pearson's History, History, History at Warrington Festival (*of course* coming Pay What You Decide to The Lowry, courtesy of Word of Warning, on Wed 13 Jun)

Next week (w/c 4 Jun) it's kind o all about Friday 8thRachel Mars's Joke Translation Service is at the Royal Exchange and there's Drift, a new artist-led event at Great Northern Warehouse, plus North & South's Theatre with Legs is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill. Other days have a smattering: on Wed 6 Jun there's the NEWK Scratch night at Live Art Bistro; on Thu 7 Jun Frances Kay's FK vs KT The Showdown is at Huddersfield University; and on Sat 9 Jun Motionhouse's Charge is at Media City.

The following week (w/c 11 Jun) there's an unfathomably fleeting flurry - with David HoyleChris Thorpe + Mala Voadora and Breach - all at HOME; Barrel Organ at the Royal Exchange (and in Leeds); Eggs Collective in St Helen's and Thrown in Bradford.  Naturally, though, the week wouldn't be complete without carving a small window in your diaries to join us at The Lowry, for the aforementioned very excellent Deborah Person's History History History!
