warnmcr: fringe deforestation...

So here we are again at the start of yet another Edinburgh megafest.  This year it is coloured, just a little, by the ending of Forest Fringe. If you happen to be in town on Fri 11 Aug, check out their final 'pass the torch' farewell at Cameo Cinema; as part of the Cameo Live Programme (6-26 Aug), which also includes Deborah PearsonMamoru Iriguchi and Chris Thorpe + mala voadora.

Without FF seeking out work is even more befuddling - so if you're really looking for a shortcut, just go to Summerhall... It is also a British Council Showcase year (21-26 Aug - a good week to be in Edinburgh) so you can also have a look at their selection.

If you want to dig a bit deeper, once again I've uploaded WoW's long list below.  As ever please forgive errors and omissions - it *is* largely our own planning tool, so it may miss out things we've seen or that we know are coming to Manchester anyway - and we mainly steer clear of internationals as they're beyond WoW's programming paygrade!

For a snapshot, we will be spending a good amount of time at Summerhall and the things taking our fancy include:
Selina ThompsonMark Thomas and Rachel Mars; some of the Canada Hub @ Kings Hall; and some of the Big in Belgium work at Upper Church @ Summerhall including Ontroerend Goed and Suzanne Grotenhuis, plus Action Hero at Codebase.
The Pleasance Courtyard could also be a worthwhile place to spend some time - look out for Touretteshero and Carnesky Productions. Underbelly venues have some interest, including LaPelle's Factory; while standing out at the Traverse, for me, is Wild Bore.

At the more physical end of the spectrum, Zoo venues' programmes include Liz AgissAakash Odedra plus Imitating the Dog; and there's The Leith Volcano with Impermanence Dance Theatre and Volcano Theatre; plus lots on at DanceBase - for some less known names maybe try Keira MartinBill Cole + Gordon MonahanOona Doherty.

Of course, if you fancy supporting some Manchester and wider northern friends the roster includes Proto-type TheaterPowder KegTin Can People,TransCreativeEggs CollectiveRashDash and Gracefool Collective - or of course, there's Forced Entertainment who have ascended the dizzy heights of the International Festival.

Please be aware that this is very much my picks, largely from paper - so don't hold it against me! Final tips - please check dates carefully with edfringe.com as you don't want to fall prey to random days off - and my main tip is to log-in edfringe.com, and use the favourites facility (you can then export your favourites as a handy spreadsheet and sort it as you please!)

Enjoy... and think of us as we'll be attempting the whole thing at breakneck speed - how many shows can you see in an 18 hour daytrip?

Best

warnmcr: miflarolab - festival frenzy episode II...

As we at Word of Warning reel out of our Spring/Summer season following our glitzy(!) film première (see the Facebook Live from the red carpet), all around us Festival frenzy has truly peaked with the collision of MIF and FLARE17...

This weekend there are still two days of FLARE17 to catch (until Sat 8 Jul) - and don't forget the £5 ticket offer for:
HOME Double Bill #2 - Simon de Winne and Tibaldus & Massive Owl tonight Fri 7 Jul, 8pm; Sprachspiel - Geert Belpaeme & Mats Van Herreweghe at the Royal Exchange also Fri 7 Jul 7.30pm + Actresses Always Lie - El Pollo Campero... at the Royal Exchange tomorrow Sat 8 Jul 7.30pm.  Meanwhile I'll be making my first MIF sortie to Returning to Reims (5-14 Jul) and Available Light (6-8 Jul); and I might venture to Susan Hefuna's ToGather (free performance Sun 9 Jul).

Next week (w/c 10 Jul) sees the conclusion of MIF, and I'm erring towards Boris Charmatz 1000 Gestures at the Mayfield Depot (Thu 13-Fri 15 Jul) and, more affordably, the free concluding Phil Collins's Ceremony on Sun 16 Jul.
Not wanting to be outdone in the festival-off, Liverpool Arab Arts Festival is also taking place (8-16 Jul) including Tania El Khoury's As Far As My Fingertips Take Me at Liverpool Central Library (12-14 Jul); and in more theatre mode,  The Crows Plucked Your Sinews at the Unity on Tue 11 Jul has been recommended to me.
Beyond festival world, there's also Joanna Tremaco's Women Who Wank on Wed 12 +Thu 13 Jul at the Wonder Inn; while up in Preston Tin Can People's The Katie + Pip Project is at Derelict Summers on Sat 15 Jul.

The following week (w/c 17 Jul), there's no let-up in the festival onslaught, with the Royal Exchange joining the fray with the Co:Lab Festival (21-23 Jul, mainly Pay What You Decide) - a host of emerging work from Elmi Ali + Nuala Maguire, Charlotte Maxwell + Marcela Hervia and Amy Lawrence amongst others. HOME also offers a second chance to see The Conker Group's Gutted (19-22 Jul).

Thereafter, I think it's safe to breathe again as the the summer slow-down starts; so this Weekly Warning is going to take advantage to go on a break until the Autumn season kicks in - though if something unmissable crops up, we'll be back - and of course, when (and if) I achieve the unfeasible task of digesting Edinburgh, I'll make some (hopefully helpful) suggestions!

warnmcr: miflarelict - a festival frenzy...

So, with the dawning and dusking of NPO day this week, hÅb, and with it Word of Warning, is very grateful and relieved to remain part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio.  On the downside, that means you can look forward to another four years of my musings – on which score...

With MIF and Derelict now underway and Flare waiting in the wings, it's festivals a-go-go. This weekend don't miss Derelict Summers in Preston (29 Jun - 2 Jul): the focal day is tomorrow, Sat 1 Jul with plenty of free city centre activity including Hofesh Schechter, Carboot Disco Bingo, plus Jamie Wood at the Media Factory; or, of course, take your pick of the plentiful MIF offerings! Contact also has Sophie Willan's Branded (until Sat 1 Jul); while over in Liverpool, Sat 1 Jul also sees Siobhan Davies Dance's material / rearranged / to / be at the Bluecoat.

Next week (w/c 3 Jul) festival frenzy becomes almost overwhelming: at MIF check out Yael Bartana's What If Women Ruled The World (5-8 Jul); Returning to Reims (5-14 Jul); Available Light (6-8 Jul) and Susan Hefuna's ToGather (performance Sun 9 Jul).  In more directly WoW-like mode, there's FLARE17 (4-8 Jul), take your pick from the selection of new European work.
For a really full-on evening-out, join Word of Warning at HOME at 6.30pm on Wed 5 Jul for the 'glittering' première of Richard DeDomenici's 24 Hour Party People: Redux at HOME, then keep going with FLARE's Grand Applause + Beauty and the Beast!

*FLARE SPECIAL OFFER use code: FLARE17FIVE for a £5 ticket for*
HOME Double Bill #1 - BOG & K.U.R.S.K on Wed 5 Jul 8pm | HOME Double Bill #2 - Simon de Winne and Tibaldus & Massive Owl on Fri 7 Jul, 8pm | Sprachspiel - Geert Belpaeme & Mats Van Herreweghe at the Royal Exchange on Fri 7 Jul 7.30pm | Actresses Always Lie - El Pollo Campero... at the Royal Exchange on Sat 8 Jul 7.30pm

The following week (w/c 10 Jul) beyond festival world, there's the intriguingly titled Joanna Tremaco's Women Who Wank on Wed 12 +Thu 13 Jul at the Wonder Inn; while up in Preston Tin Can People's The Katie + Pip Project is at Derelict Summers on Sat 15 Jul. Meanwhile the MIF colossus marches onwards towards its climax: jumping out at me is the Boris Charmatz 1000 Gestures at the Mayfield Depot (Thu 13-Fri 15 Jul) and the concluding Phil Collins's Ceremony on Sun 16 Jul.

Hoping to see you all on the red carpet next Wed (5 Jul) for Word of Warning's season closer, Richard DeDomenici's 24 Hour Party People: Redux!

warnmcr: there went summer...

So the heatwave is over, the solstice has passed and standard edition grey has returned - just in time for the next wave of 'summer' festivals.  Before that all starts, this weekend you can still catch Paper Birds' Mobile in Bury, courtesy of the Met (Fri 23 + Sat 24 Jun); and Art With Heart's Declaration at the Lowry (Sat 24 Jun).

Next week (w/c 26 Jun) in Manchester there's Sophie Willan's Branded at Contact (28 Jun - 1 Jul) and, over in Liverpool there's also Siobhan Davies Dance's material / rearranged / to / be at the Bluecoat on Sat 1 Jul.  Then, of course, it's festival time, with the start of MIF: launching with What Is The City But The People? in Piccadilly Gardens on Thu 29 Jun; plus Nigel Barrett and Louise Mari's Party Skills For the End of the World (opening 27 Jun running until 16 Jul). Further afield, Derelict Summers is in Preston (29 Jun - 2 Jul) featuring Hofesh Schechter, Carboot Disco Bingo, Jamie Wood and more.

The following week (w/c 3 Jul) carries on in fest-mode with MIF picking up pace.  Catching my eye are Yael Bartana's What If Women Ruled The World (5-8 Jul); Returning to Reims (5-14 Jul); Available Light (6-8 Jul) and Susan Hefuna's ToGather (performance Sun 9 Jul).  The week also brings FLARE17 (4-8 Jul), with a host of new work from all over Europe.  Short of listing everything, I don't have the euro-credentials to be terribly helpful, so download the brochure and see what takes your fancy!  Of the things I am familiar with, there's another chance to see Massive Owl's Castle Rock and our own (Works Ahead) Tom Cassani's Someone Loves You Drive With Care plus Britt Hatzius's Blind CinemaWord of Warning meanwhile will be hitting the red carpet ('paparazzi' and all) for the première of Richard DeDomenici's 24 Hour Party People: Redux at HOME on Wed 5 Jul - it's an early one (6.30pm) - so you can join us, and still make it to the evening's HOME FLARE double bill!

Have a good, traditional Mancunian drizzly summer weekend!

warnmcr: here comes the summer...

While the rest of the country may be basking in an undertone of summer, our little corner of the world seems to bask in perpetual grey - nowhere more so than the WoW office where it is forever winter..!

Nevertheless, the summer season rolls on and this weekend, tonight Fri 16 Jun you can still catch Qasim Riza Shaheen + LaJohn Joseph at HOME, and Powder Keg's Bears at the Royal Exchange (til 18 Jun);

Next week (w/c 19 Jun) sees the Mayers Ensemble What If I Told You? at the Royal Exchange (Mon 19 + Tue 20 Jun); Peter McMaster's 27 at Contact (Tue 20 + Wed 21 Jun); Paper Birds' Mobile in Bury, courtesy of the Met (Fri 23 + Sat 24 Jun); and Art With Heart's Declaration at the Lowry (Sat 24 Jun).

The following week (w/c 26 Jun) there's Sophie Willan at Contact; Derelict Summers in Preston and Siobhan Davies at the Bluecoat. Of course the week also sees the start of MIF, and you may want to check out Nigel Barrett and Louise Mari's Party Skills For the End of the World or the offical opening bash What Is The City But The People? in Piccadilly Gardens. Looking further ahead you really need to hold your breath for the following week as MIF really picks up pace; and is also joined by FLARE17 and WoW's own 24 Hour Party People: Redux - which is now open for booking.

Enjoy the weekend - there's a scurrilous rumour that the sun might actually shine!

warnmcr: well hung...

As we emerge, just a little weak and wobbly from sleeplessness, to a world of political tumult where the very definition of winning appears to be in dispute... this weekend you can still participate in your own world of intrigue with Blast Theory's Operation Black Antler at HOME (til 17 May).

Next week (w/c 12 June) Powder Keg's Bears is at the Royal Exchange (14-18 Jun); while HOME has a Double Bill: Martinis on the Hill & Weissmuller made by Mole Wetherall and Sven Steinhauser with students from MMU on Wed 14 Jun; and a
"Visual Art Performance Evening Double Bill" from Qasim Riza Shaheen + LaJohn Joseph on Fri 16 Jun.
Further afield Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield has Nick Cassenbaum's Bubble Schmeisis on Tue 13 Jun and Hidden Track's Standard Elite on Wed 14 + Thu 15 Jun.

The following week (w/c 12 June) sees the Mayers Ensemble at the Royal Exchange; Peter McMaster at Contact; Paper Birds in Bury and Art With Heart at the Lowry.

I'm off to amp up the caffeine levels and regret my lack of sleep... who knows, maybe we'll actually have a government by this time next week...

warnmcr: 24hr political party people...

So as we wave goodbye to May (if only), we at WoW gear up for a weekend of battling through gridlock in the name of movie-making, followed by a week where the merest glimmer of political hope gets ultimately cruelly dashed...

This weekend you can catch Nigel Barratt + Mari Louise's Margate/Dreamland at the Royal Exchange Theatre on Fri 2 + Sat 3 Jun; and Becoming Storybook is at Hulme Community Garden Centre the next few Saturdays. In Liverpool PhysicalFest reaches its conclusion with Tmesis and Jamie Wood; and in Leeds, Live Art Bistro has Uncanny Theatre's Something Terrible Might Happen tonight Fri 2 Jun and The Gender Roadshow (til 4 Jun)

Next week (w/c 5 June) seems quite quiet, but for a bit of interactivity Blast Theory's Operation Black Antler comes to HOME (7-17 May); while the The Mayers Ensemble's What If I Told You is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill on Thu 8 Jun. Also on Thu 8th, after voting of course, I'm sorely tempted to head over to Leeds for Live Art Bistro's Election Night Special.

The following week (w/c 12 June) Powder Keg are at the Royal Exchange; Qasim Riza Shaheen + LaJohn Joseph are at HOME; while further afield Nick Cassenbaum and Hidden Track are at Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield.

I'm off to puzzle over location logistics for Richard DeDomenici's 24 Hour Party People Redux

warnmcr: Extra..! Extra..!

On a blazingly hot morning there seems an irony to the brilliance of sun beaming down on this most sombre of weeks... so for a small touch of escapism...

This weekend there's still Ellie Dubois's Ringside at The Lowry (Fri 26 - Sun 28 May) while further afield, PhysicalFest is  in Liverpool (26 May-3 Jun, this week including Tmesis Theatre, Kallo Collective and Chaliwate); and Debs Gatenby's A Place Called Happiness is at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 28 May.

Next week (w/c 29 May) sees Salford Works 2017 at University of Salford on Tue 30 May with Ali Wilson, James Monaghan and Josh Jones; Mark Murphy/V-TOL's Out of the World is at The Lowry on Tue 30 + Wed 31 May; while Nigel Barratt + Mari Louise's Margate/Dreamland is at the Royal Exchange Theatre on Fri 2 + Sat 3 Jun. Also look out for upcoming events from Becoming Storybook. Over in Liverpool, PhysicalFest continues, including Levantes Dance Theatre, Lauren Silver, Katy Anne Bellis, Ishumi Ashizawa and Jamie Wood.

The following week (w/c 5 June) Blast Theory comes to HOME; and the Mayers Ensemble is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill.
We, meanwhile, will be off making blockbuster movies (!)... and here's an offer you don't get every day - we are looking for named roles and extras for Richard DeDomenici's 24 Hour Party People Redux.  So, if you see yourself as Tony Wilson, Bez or just popping up in a crowd scene, we will be filming on Sun 4 - Tue 6 Jun at various locations.  Most shoots will take about an hour, no experience needed, though we'd *really* like to hear from you if you were in the original film! All the info and how to get in touch is here - please do come and join us!

warnmcr: road...works...

This morning sees me take a momentary pause for daylight to write this, before returning to the dark depths of various Works Ahead black-boxes. You've still got a chance to join us in one of those, tonight Fri 12 May - either at STUN Studio for Chanje Kunda's Superposition or at Contact for Toni-Dee Paul's My Father's Kitchen + Tom Cassani's Someone Loves You Drive With Care.  Take your pick from astrophysical lap-dancing or dumplings + deception.  Of course I'm biased but *do* see something - they're all quite special.

Elsewhere this weekend in Leeds, there's Edythe Wooley's Did You Get That From Your Mother? at Live Art Bistro on Sat 13 May; and Best of Both Worlds's A Busker's Opera at the HUB on Sun 14 May.

Next week (w/c 15 May) rounding off our current unfeasible run, Word of Warning pops back up at The Lowry for Stephanie Ridings's The Road To Huntsville on Wed 17 May.
Contact has James Wilton Dance's Leviathan (Tue 16 + Wed 17 May); and HOME is also busy with Jack Rooke's Good Grief (17-19 May) and Kieran Hurley's Heads Up (18-20 May).
Elsewhere, Milk Presents Joan is at the LBT, Huddersfield on Mon 15 May; the Unshut Festival is in Sheffield (18-20 May); and Afreena Islam's Daughters of the Curry Revolution is at Oldham Coliseum on Thu 18 May.

The following week (w/c 22nd May) sees Reckless Sleepers at Contact; Ellie Dubois at The Lowry; (the relocated) PhysicalFest in Liverpool (26 May-3 Jun); and Debs Gatenby at the HUB, Leeds.

While I dive back into the darkness, please do join us for Works Ahead this evening at Contact or STUN Studio.
