Word of Warning — Weekly Warning

WORD OF WARNING

So finally we seem to be having a rather frosty Indian summer, which makes it my favourite time of year. Make the most of it as next week it's time to retreat to dark windowless rooms, as Autumn season kicks off with a vengeance. Take a deep breath and gird your loins - not just for the impending Emergency but for a lot more...

This weekend there's the Vital Signs Festival, including Mary Pearson's FoMO, mofos! (tonight Fri 28 Sep) at the University of Salford (28-30 Sep) and Unlimited Theatre + RashDash's Future Bodies at HOME (until 13 Oct). Tmesis Theatre's Beyond Belief is at the Unity, Liverpool (28 Sep - 6 Oct).

Next week (w/c 1 Oct) while parts Mancunian are a bit slow off the mark, elsewhere, there's Furnace Festival (1-6 Oct) at the newly renamed Leeds Playhouse including Selina Thompson's Salt on Tue 2 + Wed 3 Oct. Also on Tue 2 Oct, Andy Smith's Summit is at Axis Arts Centre, Crewe; and Michael Clark Company's to a simple rock'n'roll song is at Storyhouse Chester.  On Thu 4 Oct Jackie Hagan's This is not a safe space is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill; while, closer to home Ellie Dubois's No Show is at The Lowry on Fri 5 Oct (also at Leeds Carriageworks on Mon 8 Oct). In Leeds, Sun 7 Oct is a bumper day in Slung Low's HUB with How To Party
and We are Ian's In Bed With My Brother.

Not that I'm at all biased, but the only place to be on Sat 6 Oct is at Z-arts with Word of Warning for Emergency 2018. Against all sense of reason, I've crammed a totally unfeasible 30 performances into it, so it promises to be every bit a frenetic as ever.

The following week (w/c 8 Oct), in parts Mancunian, Wed 10 Oct is really when things get going in earnest - and thereafter you can see a show a night! Not content with 30 shows, Word of Warning has another two -  on Wed 10 Oct at The Lowry: a one-off, Brexit-inspired pairing of Instant Dissidence's One Last Dance accompanied by Leentje Van de Cruys's Belgian Waffling.  
Darren Pritchard's Rent Party is also at the Klondyke in Levenshulme (10-13 Oct); Heiner Goebbels Everything that happened and would happen is at Mayfield Depot (10-21 Oct); and Clod Ensemble's Placebo is at The Lowry (11-13 Oct).

Elsewhere remains busy.  Bradford Theatre in the Mill has its own unique leg of Instant Dissidence's One Last Dance on Mon 8 Oct and Marlborough Theatre's New Queers on the Blockon Wed 10 Oct.  Rebecca Atkinson-Lord's The Class Project is at the LBT on Tue 9 Oct;and Xavier Velastin + Hannah Mook's Me and My Whale is at Stage@Leeds on Wed 10 Oct.
The Arts Centre at Edgehill University has Karavan Ensemble's Pupik on Tue 9 Oct, Tmesis Theatre's Beyond Belief on Fri 12 Oct and A little bird told me's When did you stop dancing? on Sat 13 Oct.  Mary Pearson's FoMO, mofos! is at the Capstone, Liverpool on Wed 10 Oct; and Eve Recacha's Aftermath is at Axis, Crewe on Thu 11 Oct.

I did say, take a deep breath, because that's really quite a lot! So it's September, the leaves are falling, the freshers are falling down drunk and, in what seems like a curiously late-starting season, there's a glimmer of mancunian theatrical activity on the October horizon.

This weekend, there's a momentary flurry here in Mancunia - tonight Fri 21 Sept, there's Hush Hush at The Lowry and tomorrow, Sat 22 Sep,  House of Ghetto + Gemma Parker's The Hidden Pin-Up is at the Whitworth.
Over in Liverpool at the Biennial, there's Rosa Johan Uddoh + Tom Smith at the Bluecoat (Fri 21 Sep) and Invisible Flock's Aurora at Toxteth Reservoir (21 Sep - 7 Oct); while in Bradford Common Wealth's Radical Acts. is at the Bradford Club (til 23 Sep). Also tomorrow, Sat 22 Sep Derelict has a series of sited pieces at Lancashire Encounter in Preston.

Sat 6 Oct, sees Word of Warning herald the new season with the annual frenzy that is Emergency,this year with an even more unfeasible 30 performances in the one day.  Not content with that, on Wed 10 Oct at The Lowry, we've got another two shows hard on its heels: a one-off, Brexit-inspired pairing of Instant Dissidence's One Last Dance accompanied by Leentje Van de Cruys's Belgian Waffling.

The following week things get seriously hectic - so use Emergency to get in training for the season ahead! I, meanwhile, am off to prepare for technical meetings and contemplate why I thought 32 shows in a week was in any way a good idea!
  

As ever, Summerhall remains the general nexus of all things - including the regular sprinkling of Belgians, Finns and Canadians that always intrigue. Chris Thorpe's Status, Two Destination Language,  Katy Dye, LaJohnJoseph; People Show, Flight and Zanetti Productions piqued my interest, plus there's another chance to catch work from familar friends like Making Room and Tin Can People.

Elsewhere Vincent Gambini is at Underbelly Bristo Square; Paul O'Donnell is at Pleasance Dome; Victoria Firth is at Pleasance Courtyard  and The Lincoln Company + Michael Pinchbeck are at Zoo Southside.

Trawling the listings, actually a lot of what caught my attention was that there seemed to be quite a lot of (what could be interesting but I'm not au fait enought to know) dance work at DanceBaseand at Zoo Southside.

If you want to dig a bit deeper, once again I've uploaded WoW's long list (sorted by artist name) below.  Please be aware that this is very much my pick, largely from paper - so don't hold it against me! Please forgive things I've missed and note I don't focus on internationals as they're beyond WoW's programming paygrade! Final tips - please check dates carefully as you don't want to fall prey to random days off - and my main tip is to log-in to EdFringe, and use the favourites facility (you can then export them as a handy spreadsheet and sort it as you please - it's the only thing that keeps me halfway sane!)  All that said I've not fully planned my strategy – it could well be an exhausting there and back for Live Art Bistro's overnight odyssey! 

The Weekly Warning will be on a longer (I hope) break now until the world wakes up again - on current evidence probably mid-September. Don't forget that the call for proposals for Emergency is open til 15 Aug.

... or losing the will to live. Yes, welcome to GDPR day everybody - hopefully the day when the desperate pleas to stay on mailing lists you never joined finally stop; and email gets back to being the spammed-out-semi-useful tool it was before they started 'protecting our data'! 

Back in the real world, things are calming down for the Bank Holiday/half term/summer. This weekend Week 53 Festival continues at The Lowry, including Fat Roland's Seven Inch tonight Fri 25 May; Madhouse's Re-exit ongoing til Sat 26 May and Fuse's Dökk on Sun 27 May. Barrel Organ's Anyone Guess How We Got Here is at Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield on Fri 25 May; and the Pink Suits + Sam Kennedy double bill is at Live Art Bistro, Leeds on Sat 26 May.

Next week (w/c 28 May) Contact presents Sophie Willan's Branded at The Lowry on Thu 31 May and the Performing Gender event is at Yorkshire Dance, Leeds on Fri 1 Jun.

The following week (w/c 4 Jun) Rachel Mars is at the Royal Exchange; a new artist-led event entitled Drift is at Great Northern Warehouse; and North & South at Bradford Theatre in the Mill.  Since it's such slim-pickings I'll just take the opportunity to let you know that tickets are now available (PWYD) for Deborah Person's History History History at The Lowry on Wed 13 Jun.
