warnmcr: show flurries...

Right now I feel like I've been somewhat rudely awoken from hibernation and thrust into a world of noisy confusion (though that could be something to do with a 2am return from London).  This January flurry of activity is a little discombobulating... but take advantage now as it all calms down markedly come the end of the month.

This weekend PUSH continues at HOME with Mighty Heart Theatre's Binge tonight, Fri 18 and tomorrow, Sat 19 Jan); Josh Coates's Angels; plus, at Caustic Coastal, Nwando Ebizie's Distorted Constellations (ongoing until 26 Jan).

Next week (w/c 21 Jan) PUSH's final week sees Babel Theatre's The Fall on Mon 21 Jan; a repeat outing for Conor A's Learning To Swim On An Ironing Board on Tue 22 Jan; James Monaghan/Sheep Knuckle's Forest(23-25 Jan),Gareth Cutter's Come Closer on Fri 25 Jan; and, on Sat 26 Jan, Chanje Kunda's Plant Fetishand Javaad Alipoor's Propel.
Leo Burtin's The Futurist Cookbook is at the Lowry on Wed 23 Jan; Jo Fong + Sonia Hughes's Neither Here Nor Thereis at CCFCA on Sat 26 + Sun 27 Jan; Ruth Cockburn's Love Letters From Blackpool is at The Met, Bury on Thu 24 Jan. A lot further afield, Rosana Cade + Ivor McAskill Moot Moot at MAC Birmingham on Wed 23 Jan.

The following week(w/c 28 Jan) things seem to quieten right down again - but you could check out Michael Pinchbeck's new work with New Perspectives Theatre at Axis, Crewe or In The Palm Of My Hand at The Bluecoat, Liverpool.

Here at Word of Warning, we're pleased to unleash our Spring/Summer 2019 season - kicking off on Thu 28 Feb with a special outing to the atmospheric (faded) grandeur of Hulme's NIAMOS for Will Dickie's The Rave Space - which just so happens to be our hundredth event! We're also welcoming Katy Dye and Amy Bell, plus there's another outing for the very bonkers Haphazard; and new Works Ahead commissions to come.

warnmcr: pushing off...

Still a little bleary from the break, nevertheless here we go for another year – and HOME is giving us a good shove out of hibernation and into PUSH 2019 (11-26 Jan).

This weekend it kicks off with a launch party tonight (Fri 11 Jan), then there's Mighty Heart's Propel scratch night and Fram & Dunt tomorrow, Sat 12 Jan; plus House of Ghetto's The Hidden Pin Up on Sun 13 Jan.
Elsewhere, over in Leeds, Live Art Bistro has Edythe Woolley's Fishy tonight, Fri 11 Jan.

Next week (w/c 14 Jan) PUSH continues with (our own) Emma Geraghty's Fat Girl Singing on Mon 14 + Tue 15 Jan; and includes Conor A's Learning To Swim On An Ironing Board on Wed 16 Jan (+ Tue 22 Jan); Mighty Heart Theatre's Binge (17-19 Jan); Josh Coates's Angels night on Sat 19 Jan plus Nwando Ebizie's Distorted Constellations from Fri 18 Jan (until 26 Jan).
Further afield, Tin Can People's Katie & Pip is at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University on Thu 17 Jan.

The following week (w/c 21 Jan) PUSH includes James MonaghanGareth CutterChanje KundaBabel Theatre + Javaad Alipoor's Propel. The rest of the world is wakingup progressively, with Leo Burtin at the Lowry; Jo Fong + Sonia Hughes at CCFCA; Ruth Cockburn at The Met, Bury and (a lot) further afield Rosana Cade + Ivor McAskill at MAC Birmingham.

I'm also aiming to make some forays to London for NOW 19 and, presuming I make it back, the next Weekly Warning should also contain details of the Word of Warning Spring/Summer 2019 programme. In the meantime, if you're feeling creative and want to turn your hand to all ages live art - have a look at our Haphazard 2019 call for proposals.

warnmcr: perihumbugfest...

So here we are on the eve of December, the last day, apparently, that we can legitimately eschew all things festive. The seasonal slowdown is now upon us, but there are a handful of things you might still want to catch...

Today, Fri 30 Nov, Waterside, Sale has Nathaniel Hall's First Time (29 Nov-1 Dec - only Saturday Party tickets available); or in Bradford Irregular Arts's Consent is at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford tonight Fri 30 Nov.

Next week (w/c 3 Dec) Sue MacLaine's Vessel is at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University on Mon 3 Dec; Lancaster Arts has Maya Chowdhry's What's Eating Our Reality on Tue 4 + Wed 5 Dec (almost sold-out) and Gandini Juggling Project's Sigma on Sat 8 Dec. Live Art Bistro, Leeds is busy with two nights of work from the education sector with NSCD's On/Off on Thu 6 Dec and Leeds Beckett MA's Power|Action|Repeat on Fri 7 Dec; followed by a Queer Migrant Takeoveron Sat 8 Dec.

Thereafter, it really is panto-season so the Weekly Warning is going to take a break, but as a forewarning, 2019 kicks off early with HOME's PUSH Festival (11-26 Jan) - keep your eyes open for details.

The Weekly Warning will be back on 11 Jan 2019 (how did we get to 2019 already?). Until then have a good humbugfest.

warnmcr: points east...

As the spectacular Stacy brings Word of Warning's Autumn/Winter 2018 to a close, we can feel the icy grip of tinsel closing in around us. So, before everything succumbs to the 'festive' season...

Today, Fri 23 Nov, Proud & Loud's Cells - A Body of Work is at The Whitworth (til Sun 25 Nov). To see the most, I'd suggest getting there this afternoon - here's a teaser of new piece Assessment! Also tonight, Fri 23 Nov, on Merseyside, Tourette's Hero's Not I is at the Bluecoat, and Cheryl Martin's Alaska is at Open Eye Gallery.

The focus this weekend shifts east to Leeds for Compass Festival (till Sun 25 Nov) including Jack Tan's Four Legs GoodFrench Mottershead's Waterborne (act fast to book the last couple of tickets); Bethany Wells's WarmthScottee's Would Like To MeetAlisa Oleva + Debbie Kent's The Demolition Project and more.  Tomorrow, Sat 24 Nov, seems to be when most things converge - I found page 2 of the brochure really helpful.

Next week, (w/c 26 Nov) we find ourselves on the cusp of December, but there is still a bit of work out there over the next fortnight - so catch it while you can: The Lowry has Aakash Odedra's #Je Suis on Mon 26 Nov; and Gandini Juggling Project's Sigma on Tue 27 Nov; while STUN has Rinkoo Barpaga's Made In India/Britain on Wed 28 Nov and Waterside, Sale has Nathaniel Hall's First Time (29 Nov-1 Dec - only Sat matinee + Party available).
Elsewhere,  DaDaFest continues with The Depressed Artists' Support Bureau at The Bluecoat, Liverpool on Mon 26 Nov; Split Britches' Retro(per)spective is at Live Art Bistro, Leeds on Thu 29 Nov; and Irregular Arts's Consent is at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford on Fri 30 Nov.

The following week (w/c 3 Dec) Manchester seems to have entered panto-world, but elsewhere Sue MacLaine's Vessel is at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University on Mon 3 Dec; Lancaster Arts has Maya Chowdhry's What's Eating Our Reality on Tue 4 + Wed 5 Dec and Gandini Juggling Project's Sigma on Sat 8 Dec; and Live Art Bistro, Leeds has a Queer Migrant Takeover also on Sat 8 Dec.

If anyone has anything (non-festive) between now and mid January that they think should get a mention, please let me know by Wed 28 Nov as the next Weekly Warning will be the last one of the year.

warnmcr: cold comfort...

While one of our number jets off to warmer honeymoon climes, those remaining at Word of Warning are cuddling up under our duvets for another visit by the marvellous (and sold-out) Ms Makishi. This may come as cold comfort to those of you who missed out on a ticket, so a quick plea - as it's PWYD, if you've booked a ticket and know you can't use it, please can you cancel it so it can be reallocated; and if you're looking for a ticket, keep checking with The Lowry as they'll release any returns from today.

But first, this weekend in Mancunia, Travis Alabanza's Burgerz is at the Royal Exchange Theatre (until 17 Nov, also sold-out but you can catch in Liverpool on Sunday); and Contact presents Amy Vreeke's The Year My Vagina Tried To Kill Me at New Adelphi Theatre, University of Salford on Fri 16 + Sat 17 Nov.

DaDaFest and homotopia continue in Liverpool with Mandy Redvers-Rowe's Measuring Up on Sat 17 Nov at Liverpool Everyman; Fittings Multimedia's Mop The House tonight Fri 16 Nov; Scottee's Fat Blokes on Sat 17 Nov both at the Unity; and Travis Alabanza's Burgerz on Sun 18 Nov at Hope Street Theatre.

Elsewhere, tonight Fri 16 Nov, Kate O'Donnell's You've Changed is at Derelict Live at the Media Factory; Jamal Gerald's Dogmatic is at Theatre Deli in Sheffield; while, in Leeds, Compass Festival is up and running until 25 Nov.

Next week (w/c 19 Nov) Word of Warning's focus is on the Lowry for Tourette's Hero's Not I on Tue 20 + Wed 21 Nov; and Stacy Makishi's The Comforter on Wed 21 Nov (check back for returns). Proud & Loud's Cells - A Body of Work is at The Whitworth Fri 23-Sun 25 Nov, with the solo work on Friday and Assessment on Sat/Sun (my plan to see the most is to go for a long lunch on Friday).

On Merseyside, DaDaFest continues with The Depressed Artists' Support Bureau at The Bluecoat (Mon 19 + 26 Nov); and Mia - Daughters of Fortune on Tue 20 Nov at the Unity;  The Space In Between on Wed 21 Nov at Metal; and Tourette's Hero's Not I on Fri 23 Nov at the Bluecoat.  homotopia has Jinkx Monsoon + Major Scales' The Ginger Snapped on Wed 21 Nov at the Epstein Theatre; and Cheryl Martin's Alaska on Fri 23 Nov at Open Eye Gallery.

Elsewhere Mary Pearson's FoMO mofos! gets an outing to Chester University on Wed 21 Nov.

Compass Festival is at full tilt Thu 22 - Sun 25 Nov with Jack Tan, French Mottershead, Scottee, Bethany Wells and more.  The weekend (Sat 24 + Sun 25 Nov) seem like the best time for a trip to Leeds, and I found page 2 of the brochure really helpful for an overview.

The following week (w/c 26 Nov) things look like they're beginning to calm down for the season but Aakash Odedra and Gandini Juggling Project are at The Lowry; Split Britches are in Leeds; Irregular Arts in Bradford and Andy Smith is in Lancaster.

Hope to see you all at The Lowry for a touch of 'comfort'!

warnmcr: spilling the beans...

Through the totally fallible miracles of autoscheduling, you're hopefully receiving this while I'm basking in (or more likely checking out of) the dubious luxury of a shared Premier Inn room in Ipswich for Spill Festival - oh, the jetset lifestyle of the livearterati!

Back in parts northern, this weekend Orbit Festival at HOME includes Figs in Wigs' Often Onstage on Fri 2 + Sat 3 Nov. In Leeds, Fuel Theatre's Tonight We Fly Festival is ongoing til Sat 3 Nov including Andy Smith's Summit (tonight) and the Lock Her Up installation inc Rachel Mars + Paula Varjack on Fri 2 + Sat 3 Nov. Liz Agiss's Slap and Tickle is at Liverpool Hope University (as part of LEAP 2018) tonight Fri 2 Nov; while Andy Smith's Summit is also at Derelict Live in Preston on Sat 3 Nov.

Next week (w/c 5 Nov) Manchester Jewish Museums' Festival of Leaving (5-18 Nov) kicks off with Ellie Harrison's Journey with Absent Friends on Mon 5 Nov and continues with  Nick Cassenbaum's Bubble Schmeisis on Thu 8 Nov. Elsewhere Matrafisc Dance's Watch Us Dance is at the New Adelphi at Salford University on Fri 9 Nov; while Proto-type Theater's The Audit is at Axis, Crewe on Tue 6 Nov

The real action is on Merseyside - I can't detail everything - so check the following:
LEAP 2018 (2 -12 Nov) at Liverpool Hope University with: on Mon 5 Nov Gaby Agis; on Tue 6 Nov Jo Fong + Laila Diallo + Liz Roche; on Wed 7 Nov Liz Lea + Andrea Buckley / taciturn / Claricia Kruithof;on Thu 8 Nov Uchenna Dance; and on Sat 10 Nov Rosie Kay Dance.
DaDaFest International (5 Nov - 8 Dec) - this week including Proud & Loud Arts Cells - a body of work at Tate Liverpool (5-11 Nov)  my tip: go on Wed 7 Nov (12+2) or Sat 1o Nov (11+1230) to catch Affirmations as well as the solo works; and Stopgap Dance's The Enormous Room at Storyhouse, Chester on Tue 6 Nov.
homotopia (2 Nov - 1 Dec) - this week including Peter Groom's Dietrich: Natural Duty on Tue 6 Nov and Darren Pritchard Dance's Rent Party on Wed 7 + Thu 8 Nov - both at the Unity.

The following week (w/c 12 Nov) in Mancunia, Festival of Leaving continues with SefirothTravis Alabanza is at the Royal Exchange Theatre; and Amy Vreeke is at New Adelphi, Salford.  On Merseyside, LEAP concludes with James Wilton Dance; Dadafest continues with The Depressed Artists Support Bureau and Mandy Redvers-Rowe; and comes together with homotopia for Mina and Fittings Multimedia; while homotopia also has Scottee and Travis Alabanza.  Elsewhere, Kate O'Donnell is in Edgehill and PrestonJamal Gerald is in Sheffield while, in Leeds, Compass Festival (16-25 Nov) kicks off with a welcome and Etheridge + Persighetti's Public House.

Meanwhile... in the alternate universe of Ipswich, I imagine we're about to head off in search of some elusive site-specific work - or failing that, brunch!

warnmcr: falling back...

There's no pretending now: it's proper Autumn - we have the first rumours of snow, the clocks are going back and Halloween is looming. It's also a bit of shocker on the performance front - especially if you're willing to travel...

This weekend Orbit Festival (23 Oct - 3 Nov) continues at HOME, including Toussaint To Move's Windows of Displacement on Fri 26 + Sat 27 Oct.  Contact also has Nima Séne's Beige B*tch at STUN on Fri 26 + Sat 27 Oct; the Royal Exchange Theatre continues with Chris Thorpe's The Mysteries (25 Oct - 11 Nov) and Glen Neath + David Rosenberg's Séance (until 31 Oct).
Also tonight, Fri 26 Nov, Lancaster Arts has Marisa Carnesky's Dr Carnesky's Incredible Bleeding Woman, while tomorrow, Sat 27 Nov, B-groups' Point of Echoes is at the Arts Centre at Edgehill University.

Next week (w/c 29 Oct) Orbit Festival includes Milk Presents Bullish (29-31 Oct) and Figs in Wigs' Often Onstage on Fri 2 + Sat 3 Nov. Julie Cunningham's To Be Me is at The Lowry on Thu 1 Nov; while LaPelle's Factory's The Black Cat is at Waterside, Sale on Thu 1 Nov - following its Halloween appearance at the Carriageworks in Leeds.
Still looking east, Fuel Theatre's Tonight We Fly Festival lands in Leeds (30 Oct- 3 Nov) including Andy Smith (both Summit + The Preston Bill) plus Uninvited Guests and the Lock Her Up installation with work by Rachel Mars + Paula Varjack.
Further west, Liz Agiss's Slap and Tickle is at Liverpool Hope University (as part of LEAP 2018) on Fri 2 Nov; while Andy Smith's Summit is at The Arts Centre at Edgehill University on Thu 1 Nov and Derelict Live in Preston on Sat 3 Nov.

The following week (w/c Mon 5 Nov) Mancunia seems generally a bit quiet but check out Matrafisc Dance at Salford University; and Manchester Jewish Museums' Festival of Leaving (5-18 Nov), this week including Ellie Harrison and Nick Cassenbaum.
Proto-type Theater are in Crewe, while on Merseyside there's a festival frenzy with:
LEAP 2018 (2 -12 Nov) including Gaby AgisJo FongLaila Diallo + Liz RocheLiz LeaAndrea Buckley / taciturn / Claricia Kruithof,Uchenna Dance and Rosie Kay Dance;
DaDaFest International (5 Nov - 8 Dec) - this week including Proud & Loud Arts at Tate Liverpool and Stopgap Dance (in Chester);
homotopia (2 Nov - 1 Dec) - this week including Dietrich: Natural Duty and Rent Party.
Tbh I'm finding it a bit overwhelming... for me it helps to look at it in list form - try agenda-view in the WoW google calendar!

Meanwhile, on the home front - a bit of Word of Warning news: tickets for the very marvellous Stacy Makishi's The Comforter on Wed 21 Nov at The Lowry can be booked from later today.  It's a 7pm show and if you book for it (PWYD), you can use a code to get a £10 ticket for Tourette's Hero Not I immediately after...

Over the next 10 days, the hard core livearterati will be making the biennial trek to the far reaches of the east for SPILL Festival in Ipswich (25 Oct - 4 Nov) - it's a very, very long way away, so that's my excuse if normal service is disrupted next week!

Make the most of it, as things quieten down markedly in parts Mancunian for the following few weeks.

warnmcr: paying the rent..?

Here at Word of Warning we're reeling from our 32 show epic week and looking forward to just a little bit of non-show time... you, however, have a bewildering panoply of choice...

This weekend Darren Pritchard's Rent Party is ongoing at the Klondyke in Levenshulme until Sat 13 Oct (only a few Sat matinee tickets left - also see the BBC film about it); MIF has Heiner Goebbels's Everything that happened and would happen at Mayfield Depot until 21 Oct (wrap up very warm); and Clod Ensemble's Placebo is at The Lowry until Sat 13 Oct.

Further afield, the Arts Centre at Edgehill University has Tmesis Theatre's Beyond Belief, tonight Fri 12 Oct, and A little bird told me's When did you stop dancing? on Sat 13 Oct; while Slung Low's HUB in Leeds has Tin Can People's Katie & Pip on Sun 14 Oct .

Next week (w/c 15 Oct) Contact presents Keisha Thompson's Man On The Moon (16-20 Oct) and Elmi Ali's Water, Seeds Not Stone (20, 22, 23 Oct) at STUN.  The Breaking Ground platform is at Sale Waterside on Thu 18 OctSéance is at The Royal Exchange Theatre (19-31 Oct).  On Fri 19 Oct Quarantine's Wallflower is at the New Adelphi University of Salford; and Emma Decent's I Don't Know What I'm Supposed To Be Doing is at Chorlton Library.

Elsewhere, Ellie Dubois's No Show is at Lancaster Arts on Mon 15 Oct; Gracefool Collective's This Really Is Too Much is at Stage@Leeds on Wed 17 Oct; Lisa Alexander's To You, To You, To You is at Edgehill on Wed 17 Oct; Derelict has Clod Ensemble's Placebo at the Media Factory in Preston on Fri 19 + Sat 20 Oct; and Unlimited Theatre + RashDash's Future Bodies is at the LBT, Huddersfield on Fri 19 Oct.

The following week (w/c 22 Oct) sees Orbit Festival at HOME, including Xavier de Sousa, Selina Thompson, Akeim Toussaint Buck, YESYESNONO + Dante or Die.  Contact has Nima Séne at STUN; the Lowry has Meraki Collective's Drift; and the Royal Exchange Theatre has Chris Thorpe's The Mysteries. Further afield The Foley Explosion is in Lancaster; Mary Pearsonand b-group at Edgehill; and Third Angel in Leeds.

I'm going back to ploughing through the terrifyingly enormous quantity of documentation we've gathered over the past week!
