warnmcr: the cupboard's bare...

With pancakes and flowers safely behind us, and before easter eggs fill the shelves, we've somehow already reached the middle of Feb and the cupboard's looking a bit bare...

This weekend, though, you can still catch Sophie Willan's Branded at Bradford Theatre in the Mill or Louisa Claughton's Interchangeable Bodies at Live Art Bistro, Leeds, both on Fri 16 Feb; also in Leeds, there's Pauline Mayers's What If I Told You at WYP (tonight Fri 16 + tomorrow Sat 17 Feb); and Antonia Beck + Lucy Nicholls's The Death Show at HUB on Sun 18 Feb.

Next week (w/c 19 Feb) in Manchester there's The Bare Project's On The Outskirts of a Large Event at HOME (21-24 Feb), while Gecko's The Wedding is at Liverpool Playhouse (also 21-24 Feb). Staying in more theatrical mode you can also catch Horse + Bamboo Theatre's The Moonwatcher at The Duke's, Lancaster (Tue 20 Feb), Bury Met (Wed 21 Feb) and The Grand Clitheroe (Fri 23 Feb).

The following week (w/c 26 Feb) Proto-type Theater are in Lancaster and with WoW at the Lowry - which also hosts Company Chameleon; Horse + Bamboo are at the Royal Exchange Theatre; Sweetshop Revolution + Mapdance at Edgehill; Verve in Lancaster; Ryan O'Shea in Crewe; and Uncanny Theatre in Leeds.

warnmcr: hearts + flowers or sackcloth + ashes...

In the blink of an eye yet another week has passed and already a strange confluence of valentines and ash wednesday is looming - presumably you'll be able to spot us sad singles by our sackcloth and ashes! On the show front, things are just a bit quiet in parts Mancunian, so if you're itching for some performance, you might want to consider a roadtrip...

Tonight, Fri 9 Feb Queer Contact has 201DanceCompany's Skin at Waterside, Sale; while Tin Can People's Katie and Pip is at Lancaster Arts. Meanwhile, on Sun 11 Feb, Form has Christopher Brett Bailey+ Tomas Jevanova's Rate-X at Bootleg Social in Blackpool.

Next week (w/c 12 Feb) for a touch of the acrobatic, The Lowry has Nikki + JD's Knot on Thu 14 Feb (more info); otherwise, get ready to hit the road for Racheal Ofori's So Many Reasons at Edgehill on Mon 12 Feb; or Probe's Now You See It in Crewe on Tue 13 Feb. Fallen Angels' Dark Night Ends is at Liverpool Hope's Capstone Theatre on Thu 15 Feb; while Sophie Willan's Branded is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill on Fri 16 Feb.
Head to Leeds for Pauline Mayers's What If I Told You at WYP (13-17 Feb); Louisa Claughton's Interchangeable Bodies at Live Art Bistro on Fri 16 Feb; and Antonia Beck + Lucy Nicholls's The Death Show at HUB on Sun 18 Feb.
Alternatively in Lancaster there's The Bare Project's On The Outskirts Of A Large Event on Tue 13 Feb, plus the Foot in the Door sharings on Thu 15 Feb (both at Lancaster Arts); or Daniel Bye's The Price Of Everything on Wed 14 Feb at the Gregson.

The following week (w/c 19 Feb) generally things are looking a touch threadbare - but you can always catch The Bare Project at HOME, while Gecko is in Liverpool.

I'm gearing up for a week on the road (as we're supporting Foot in the Door in Lancaster) - though I might be tempted to stay home in my sackcloth for the odd pancake...

warnmcr: the bear necessities...

Here we are in February, unbelievably the sun's shining and they're changing the guard at Manchester Palace...

Unless I'm missing something, after the January early flurry, we seem to be hitting a bit of a quiet patch in parts Mancunian, but this weekend, Hofesh Schechter's Grand Finale continues at HOME  til Sat 3 Feb); while Hannah Mook is doing a wip sharing of Me and My Whale at Partisan on Sun 4 Feb.

Next week (w/c 5 Feb) however, Queer Contact has Jamie Fletcher & Company's Dancing Bear at the Palace Theatre on Tue 6 + Wed 7 Feb; and 201DanceCompany's Skin at Waterside, Sale on Fri 9 Feb.
Further afield on Tun 6 Feb Motionhouse's Charge is at Chester Storyhouse while Tom Cassani's Someone Loves You Drive With Care is at Axis, Crewe; on Thu 8 Feb YesYesNoNo's Five Encounters on a Site Called Craigslist is at Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield while The Hiccup Project's May-We-Go-Round is at the Arts Centre, Edgehill University; Tin Can People's Katie and Pip is at Lancaster Arts on Fri 9 Feb; and Christopher Brett Bailey+ Tomas Jevanova's Rate-X is at Bootleg Social in Blackpool courtesy of Form, on Sun 11 Feb.

The following week (w/c 12 Feb) seems, once more, to be about travelling: Racheal Ofori is at Edgehill; Probe in Crewe; Pauline Mayers, Louisa Claughton and Antonia Beck + Lucy Nicholls in Leeds; The Bare Project, Foot in the Door and Daniel Bye in Lancaster; Fallen Angels in Liverpool; and Sophie Willan in Bradford.

Just a quick final note that, for the early birds amongst you, you can now book for Word of Warning's first little peek over the parapet this year with Proto-type Theater's The Audit (Wed 28 Feb).

warnmcr: taking stock...

So unbelievably February is looming already, not that I trust for a second the hazy sunshine that's peeking through this morning...

This weekend, you can still catch Hercules Productions' Rasta Liv at HOME (tonight Fri 26 + tomorrow Sat 27 Jan) while Queer Contact 2018 (27 Jan-24 Feb) kicks off tomorrow, Sat 27 Jan, with a Mother's Ruin at Oldham Coliseum. Further afield Bryony Kimmings + Brian Lobel's A Pacifist's Guide To The War On Cancer starts its run at Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse (26 Jan-3 Feb).

Next week (w/c 29 Jan) seems a bit on the quiet side but Hofesh Schechter's Grand Finale is at HOME (31 Jan-3 Feb); while Rebekka Platt's SHIFT is at Partisan on Thu 1 Feb; and Keisha Thompson's Man On The Moon is at Liverpool Unity also on Thu 1 Feb.

The following week (w/c 5 Feb) Jamie Fletcher & Co are at the Palace Theatre courtesy of Queer Contact.  If you fancy travelling pickings are quite rich, with Tom Cassani in Crewe; Motionhouse in Chester; YesYesNoNo in Sheffield; The Hiccup Project at Edgehill; Tin Can People in Lancaster and Christopher Brett Bailey in Blackpool.

We at Word of Warning, meanwhile, are taking a little time out from programme for a bit of stock-taking, so Spring/Summer will be quite quiet - though fittingly we will next be popping up with a WTF at The Lowry with Proto-type Theater's The Audit (tickets available Fri 2 Feb).

warnmcr: off the rails...

This morning finds me more than a little bleary, from a train-tube-overground roundtrip railfest last night to see new shows by Stacy Makishi and Lucy Hutson (if you're heading to London in the next few weeks, check out NOW 18 at The Yard - just maybe don't try there and back in the night!)  Meanwhile, I'll attempt to offer some clarity on this week's offerings much closer to home:

This weekend, tonight Fri 19 Jan, you might still catch Reckless Sleepers' The Last Supper at Salford University's Digital Performance Lab (says it's sold out but keep an eye on the site); while tomorrow, Sat 20 Jan, The Lowry has Michela Pelusio's Space Time Helix.

Next week (w/c 22 Jan) PUSH continues at HOME, including Meraki Collective's Only Speak When Spoken To on Tue 23 and Wed 24 Jan; and Hercules Productions' Rasta Liv (25-27 Jan).  The Lowry has two durational pieces from Adam York Gregory + Gillian Jane Lees  (of Proto-type Theater): on Thu 24 Jan Perspective is not a science (but a hope) with Salford University; and on Fri 25 Jan, Present Tense (look out for Proto-type Theater's The Audit in March - on sale 2 Feb). Oldham Coliseum has Lemn Sissay's Something Dark on Thu 25 Jan plus the kick-off of Queer Contact 2018 (27 Jan-24 Feb) with a Mother's Ruin on Sat 27 Jan. Further afield Lancaster Arts launches its season on Tue 23 Jan with 21 Common's Dancer;  Stage@Leeds has Keira Martin's Here Comes Trouble on Thu 25 Jan; while Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse has Bryony Kimmings + Brian Lobel's A Pacifist's Guide To The War On Cancer (26 Jan - 3 Feb)

The following week (w/c 29 Jan) Hofesh Schechter is at HOME; Rebekka Platt is at Partisan; Massive Owl are at Axis, Crewe and Keisha Thompson is at Liverpool Unity.

I'm off to imbibe more caffeine to counteract the effects of getting to Hackney Wick and back in the evening!

warnmcr: pushing on...

It's a whole new year and I'm battling to crawl out of the hideous void that was December 2017, when this Weekly Warning lost its most avid reader, my mum.  So, in her memory, here's my first attempt to look forward to 2018:

Thanks to the Royal Exchange and HOME, the year gets off to a flying start.  This weekend you can still catch Tim Cowbury (Made in China)'s The Claim at Royal Exchange Theatre (until Sat 13 Jan).  HOME's PUSH 2018 (12-27 Jan) also kicks off, and tomorrow (Sat 13 Jan) has Propel, a day of sharings including James Monaghan (Sheep Knuckle)'s Forrest, Elmi Ali's Said The Seismograph About The Tremor and Josh Coates + Ali Pidsley's Untitled A.I. Project Interactive Workshop.

Next week (w/c 15 Jan), PUSH continues with two shows by YESYESNONO: Insert Slogan Here on Mon 15 and Tue 16 Jan; and 5 Encounters on a Site Called Craigslist on Mon 15 and Wed 17 Jan.  Salford University's Digital Performance Lab also plays host to Reckless Sleepers' The Last Supper on Thu 18 (sold out) + Fri 19 Jan; while The Lowry has Michela Pelusio's Space Time Helix on Sat 20 Jan.

The following week (w/c 22 Jan) PUSH continues, including Meraki Collective and Hercules Productions; while at The Lowry there are two durational pieces from Adam York Gregory + Gillian Jane Lees  (of Proto-type Theater) working with Salford University; and Queer Contact 2018 (27 Jan-24 Feb) kicks off with a Mother's Ruin at Oldham Coliseum (which also hosts Lemn Sissay); while further afield Stage@Leeds has Keira Martin; and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse has A Pacifist's Guide To The War On Cancer.

So basically - if you're post-xmas stir-crazy, I think there's something there that will pretty much fill every night to the end of the month..!

warnmcr: December dawns...

So December is upon us, the world is one big pantomime and we can no longer pretend that tinsel tat season is not nigh. On the upside, it also means you get a break from my weekly musings...

In the meantime, this weekend you can still catch Forced Entertainment's Real Magic at HOME tonight, Fri 1 Dec; and Mawaan Rizwan's Twerk in Progress at Contact tomorrow, Sat 2 Dec. Further afield tonight, Fri 1 Dec you can take your pick from Greg Wohead's Call It A Day (wip) at Bradford Theatre in the Mill or Jamal Gerald's Dogmatic at Live Art Bistro, Leeds, which also has Hannah Mook + XVElastin's Me and My Whale (wip) on Sat 2 Dec. Tangled Dance's Frosted by Magic is also at Heaton Hall (weekends til 17 Dec)

Next week (w/c 4 Dec) sees a bit of a flourish before panto season with Powder Keg's Morale Is High at Contact (6-8 Dec); while at HOME there's Meow Meow's Feline Intimate on Wed 6 Dec, Jinkx Monsoon + Major Scales's The Vaudevillians (7-9 Dec) and Tiger Lilies' A Cold Night on Thu 7 Dec. Elsewhere Top Joe is at Live Art Bistro on Wed 7 Dec and the Lightwaves Festival opens on Salford Quays (8-17 Dec).

The following week (w/c 11 Dec) Hot Brown Honey is at HOME (12-23 Dec) while, Slung Low's The Siege of Christmas returns to Contact (13-20 Dec) - or for a bit of a roadtrip, head to Sheffield Theatres for Darren Pritchard + Cheryl Martin's Rent Party (13-23 Dec).

Beyond that, it all goes a bit panto - so the Weekly Warning is going to take a break til sometime in January when the festive (metaphoric) hangover subsides - though, for an early warning look out for HOME's Push Festival (12-27 Jan) and Tim Cowbury's The Claim at Royal Exchange (10-13 Jan).

Have a good break.

warnmcr: black friday...

After a dark, grey, fuggy week, today sees a series of imports from the west: an almost Icelandic short clear, crisp day - just in time for the annual imported americana consumerfest.  For those not battling into stores in search of an elusive or illusory bargain, this weekend you might also have to battle for tickets for Keisha Thompson's Man On The Moon at Contact (until 25 Nov, also at the HUB, Leeds on Sun 26 Nov); and Company Chameleon's Illuminate at Manchester Central Library Fri 24 + Sat 25 Nov (waiting list only). Alternatively there's Sonya Moorehead's Feral at The Met, Bury on Sat 25 Nov.

Next week (w/c 27 Nov) Contact welcomes Dickie Beau's Re-member Me on Tue 28 + Wed 29 Nov; and Mawaan Rizwan's Twerk in Progress on Sat 2 Dec; Forced Entertainment's Real Magic is at HOME (29 Nov-1 Dec); or for some alternative festiveness Tangled Dance's Frosted by Magic is at Heaton Hall (weekends til 17 Dec).  Further afield, on Fri 1 Dec Greg Wohead's Call It A Day (wip) is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill and Jamal Gerald's Dogmatic is at Live Art Bistro, Leeds (which also has Hannah Mook + XVElastin's Me and My Whale (wip) on Sat 2 Dec).

The following week (w/c 4 Dec) sees Powder Keg at Contact; and Meow Meow, Jinkx Monsoon + Major Scales and Tiger Lilies at HOME. Meanwhile Top Joe is at Live Art Bistro and the Lightwaves Festival opens on Salford Quays.

I'm off to try and resist the lure of the giant TV 'bargain'..!

warnmcr: WoW's gone to Iceland...

Not a frozen food commercial but, being a bit partied out from last week's rent party extravaganza, for a radical change of scene from a chilly tower block, as this missive reaches you, I'm in an even chillier Reykjavik  - at the Everybody's Spectacular festival (obviously hard at work and *not* basking in the Blue Lagoon!)

For those of you closer to home, this weekend, head to Contact for some Black Gold with Cheryl Martin's Who Wants To Live Forever on Fri 17 + Sat 18 and Nuclear on Sat 18 Nov.

Next week (w/c 20 Nov) Contact remains busy with Keisha Thompson's Man On The Moon (21-25 Nov) and Uchenna Dance's The Head Wrap Diaries (Wed 22 + Thu 23 Nov). Legroom has Alex De Little's Resonance, Tactility + Movement on Wed 22 Nov; while Company Chameleon's Illuminate is at Manchester Central Library on Fri 24 + Sat 25 Nov (waiting list only).  Further afield Chanje Kunda's Superposition is at Lancaster Arts.

The following week (w/c 27 Nov) Dickie Beau and Mawaan Rizwan are at Contact; Forced Entertainment are at HOME; or for some alternative festiveness, Tangled Dance are at Heaton Hall.  Further afield, Greg Wohead is at Bradford Theatre in the Mill and Jamal Gerald is at Live Art Bistro, Leeds.

Rent Party:Domestic Edition brought WoW's 2017 season to a rousing close - we'll be letting you know what our 7th year brings in early January.  I meanwhile, I'm off to experience some nordic performance!

warnmcr: towering success..?!

This morning sees me more than a little bleary from five days in a tower block and two previews last night - so please forgive any errors or glaring omissions in the following...!

Of course, this weekend, for Word of Warning it's all about Darren Pritchard Dance's Rent Party:Domestic Edition at Adelphi Court, Salford -  tonight Fri 10 Nov (8+9.30pm) and tomorrow Sat 11 Nov (6+8pm). It's really quite special and mostly sold out, but there are some tickets left for 6pm Saturday - or get in touch and we can add you to the waiting list as, like all Pay What You Decides, there may be some returns.
Elsewhere in Salford Kate O'Donnell's You've Changed is at The Lowry also tonight, Fri 10 + Sat 11 Nov; while over in Liverpool, Homotopia continues with David Hoyle's Diamond on Sat 11 Nov; and in Leeds, Live Art Bistro has Tom Marshman's Kings Cross also on Sat 11 Nov.

Next week (w/c 13 Nov) for something sonic, Legroom has Machine Music: Almost Credible Music on Tue 14 Nov; while Cheryl Martin's Who Wants To Live Forever  is at Contact on Fri 17 and Sat 18 Nov.  There's a rare visit by Gob Squad to Lancaster Arts with two shows: We Are Gob Squad and So Are You on Tue 14 Nov and War and Peace on Thu 16 Nov.  Also on Thu 16 Nov Axis, Crewe has Igor and Moreno's A Room For All Our Tomorrows; and Live Art Bistro, Leeds has Marikiscrycrycry's $elfie$.

The following week (w/c 20 Nov) Keisha Thompson and Uchenna Dance are at Contact; Company Chameleon's Illuminate is at Manchester Central Library; while Chanje Kunda is at Lancaster Arts.

I'm off to twinkle up our star cloth and polish the mirror ball for Rent Party:Domestic Edition (somewhat fittingly, I'm actually off to top up the leccy meter) - hope to see you in a Salford tower block!
